 Optional Garden Tour Friday, Nov. 8th 9:00am – 4:00pm

Nitobe Memorial Garden, 1895 Lower Mall, Vancouver, BC, Canada The Nitobe Memorial Garden is considered to be one of the best traditional Japanese gardens in North America and among the top five outside Japan. Nestled in two acres of native BC forest, this stroll garden with Shinto undertones includes a rare authentic Zen garden and ceremonial Tea House. This tranquil oasis is a Memorial Garden created to enshrine the spirit of the Japanese scholar, educator and diplomat Dr. Inazo Nitobe (18621933). Set in British Columbia and designed by Professor Mori from Chiba University, Japan, the garden realizes Dr. Nitobe's dream of "becoming a bridge across the Pacific" to foster inter-cultural understanding. As a Zen garden the Nitobe is meticulously designed down to every leaf and stone, a place where interpretive signage would detract from the garden's minimalist purpose: "To have nothing is to have everything" (Zen Koan) A Japanese garden is not only a place of beauty. It is also a place where the soul can find nourishment.

Momiji Garden, 2901 East Hastings St., Vancouver, BC, Canada The Momiji Commemorative Garden serves as a reminder of the internment of Japanese Canadians during the Second World War. The garden is located near the stables on the Pacific National Exhibition grounds where the internees were first detained before being sent to internment camps. The Vancouver Japanese Gardeners Association designed and created the garden in 1993 with the upper and lower sections of the garden divided by a stone wall that is reminiscent of ancient castles in Japan. The principle elements are a waterfall, utilizing the difference in grade creating a two-step descent, to a pond, that is surrounded by Japanese maple trees and small shrubs. The use of azaleas, irises, hydrangeas, daylilies and Japanese maples offer colour all year round.
