WHEN BUYING A NEW FLOOR KNOW THEM, SO YOU DON’T MAKE THEM!

TOP 6 MISTAKES MOST PEOPLE MAKE WHEN BUYING A NEW FLOOR

Measuring The Space Yourself MISTAKE: Contrary to what the big brand stores might have you thinking, measuring your own floor is not a good idea. It reminds me of the old saying: “If you think a professional is expensive, wait until you hire an amateur!” If you get this wrong you may have to buy the entire thing again, for example - if the carpet is too short to reach all the walls it will have to be replaced with a larger piece. And carpets cannot be returned once they have been cut. Also, if you are buying your floor by the box (like wood or tiles) you may not buy enough - causing the job to be prolonged and possibly being billed for extra fitting days.

SOLUTION: Always get a professional flooring company to measure up. This is always the right move because any mistakes are their responsibility, giving you the much needed peace of mind you deserve.

Guessing How It Will Look

MISTAKE: Trying to imagine what the floor will look like in your house without ever seeing it in your house. Choosing a new floor from a carpet warehouse show room lit with unnatural florescent bulbs and being under the constant threat of the ever present lurking salesman is no way to decide if that is the right floor for you.

SOLUTION: If possible, always try to get a sample to look at in the room you want the floor. You can see the right lighting conditions, try it next to your walls and furniture, and imagine how it will feel under your feet when its finally down and you can run across it barefoot.

Assuming Everything Will Be Taken Care Of MISTAKE: Assuming That You Will Not Have To Lift A Finger. Not every flooring company is made the same. Certain companies have ‘hidden’ policies, which you may not be aware of until its too late. Many big-brand flooring companies only ‘fit ‘ your floor. They WILL NOT: • Take up and disposed of your old floor • Move any furniture • Remove any rubbish • Plain any doors • Hover up once they are finished • Move any electrical goods or plumbed in appliances (which is especially ridiculous if they are fitting a kitchen floor)

SOLUTION: Find a flooring company who can meet all of your above needs, and if possible will include all of this as a standard in their price. (Just a heads up – we include all of this as standard over at cftflooring.co.uk)

Not Selecting The Correct Floor

MISTAKE: Not taking into consideration the best type of floor for the room or area that it is going in. Buying the right floor for a room in your home involves more than finding a style in the color you like. You first will need to consider your lifestyle— what you typically do in that room—location, material, construction, and upkeep.

There are many things to consider when determining the SOLUTION to this one:

Colour What colours feature most in your current decor OR what colours will you be incorporating into your newly designed space?                           Natural colours are easy to match with furniture and fittings - what's more, natural designs will keep looking great as you change and update your furnishings over the years.

Location What is the size and shape of the room? Is the room bright and full of sunlight or darker with fewer windows? Light floors make a room feel more spacious and can brighten up darker areas of your home, whilst mid-toned materials can add warmth to a space. Use samples to test in your room at different times of day to see how the lighting looks against your favourite products.  Materials Do you prefer the look of wood, stone, carpet or something a bit different?                                            When it comes to wood designs, oak is a classic staple, but for something more unusual take a look at elm, hickory, ignea or tiger wood. Stone look tiles include classics such as marble and limestone, but you can also get quirkier options. Capet is a classic staple and adds a bit of comfort and luxury to any room. Construction There are many ways that each type of floor can be constructed giving it different properties that can influence your buying decision. Will there be food and drink spills such as a kitchen or dining room? Water and bubbles in the bathroom? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need a floor that's durable and easy to care for and keep clean. You can bet they will be able to withstand the everyday hustle and bustle of your home.

Focusing On Looks Over Function

MISTAKE: Not taking into consideration that once you are over the initial love at first sight, it’s the function that remains. We all want a beautiful white carpet in the hallway but is it practical?

SOLUTION: When choosing a new floor, think function first. Ask yourself a few questions: •   What is this room used for? •  How much traffic does it get? •  Does the room receive a lot of sunlight? •  Does the light change during the day? •  Is it next to indoor or outdoor spaces? •  How often am I likely to vacuum it? •  Is food and drink likely to be spilt on this floor? Answers to these questions will help you begin to determine the best texture, construction, color and durability. cftflooring.co.uk

Not Investing In The Subfloor

MISTAKE: Thinking that the sub floor isn’t important.

This is not an uncommon problem because most people don’t know the benefits of proper sub floor preparation. However this can be the key to making sure that your new floor last for years to come.

SOLUTION: Make sure to make the small investment to make sure your floor has a double or even triple life span. This can be as simple as investing in a good underlay under a carpet, cement screeding an uneven concrete floor, or screwing down plywood onto uneven floorboards before laying a new vinyl.
