MSU Tollgate Gardens Volunteer General Meeting in the Conference Center Thursday, September 15, 7:00 PM

The Edible Connection Join Tollgate garden volunteers on Thursday evening, September 15, in the Conference Center to learn about The Edible Connection. Lacey Ingrao will discuss the value of edible gardens to enliven your senses and your life. In addition to ideas for edible landscaping, Lacey will include information about her recent addition of a sensory garden at her farm where there are twelve bee hives. She will also tell us about Heroes to Hives, a nine-month urban beekeeping mentorship program for military veterans. Lacey Ingrao, M.A., is a farmer at Bee Wise Farms, LLC, in Lansing, http:// www.beewisefarms.com/. The goals of the farm are to provide the community with quality food, education and wellness; to produce high quality bee products, vegetables and cut flowers; to provide beginning beekeepers with a safe, restorative place to learn in a hands-on environment; and to promote wellness through yoga, nature-based therapies, and transitional support. At First United Methodist Church Bee Wise Farms, they use sustainable production practices, including cover of Northville Gardens from a June Garden Walk cropping, organic pest control, and habitat conservation. FROM THE TOLL GA TE FARM MANAGER

GREETINGS Roy Prentice Greetings All, August has come and gone. This summer has flown by with new pavilions, well-attended workdays and record temperatures. Cold temperatures may soon arrive – but are not here just yet. There is still a bit more summer to enjoy. Fair Time: The next big event of the Tollgate gardening year is the Fall Fair. The Fall Fair committee has been working hard all year to put together the details of this, our biggest “for the public” event of the year. We need the help of the Tollgate volunteers on the day of the fair to staff all of the activities that have made the fair so popular with our visitors. Have a good friend? Bring them to the fair too! Have a friend that’s not so good? They can come too, we’ll make sure to assign them to a different craft table. You do not have to be a member of Tollgate to help out at the fair. Diligent work on recent activity days has the site looking good. There are still weeds to pull, though. We want the farm to look its best for our guests. The fair is our prime opportunity to let the public know about Tollgate and all that we have to offer. With your assistance, we can make all of the planning and preparation that the fall fair committee does throughout the year translate into a really great event.

Why did the Turkey’s Cross Meadowbrook Road?

Turkeys: If you take the time to walk around the Tollgate hay fields, you could well see a flock of turkeys. Wild turkeys have gradually been making their way into SE Michigan. This year, a flock established itself at Tollgate. Once, I even heard the Tollgate rooster and the turkeys calling back and forth to one another, one from the coop, the others from the woods. Crazy. Recognition Dinner: Remember to reserve the date for our end-of-the-year recognition dinner. The Recognition dinner is scheduled for Saturday, November 5, beginning at 4:00 . Although November seems like a long time away, it will be here soon! Roy

Ospreys: If you are out walking near the Tollgate pond you may be lucky enough to see an osprey. Although Tollgate’s perch is not yet occupied by an osprey pair, Barbara Jensen of Osprey Watch informs me that the trackers on the ospreys that she watches indicate that two ospreys are cruising the area in and around Tollgate. The ospreys who are visiting Tollgate were hatched this spring at Kensington. They are now checking out their environment. Who knows? They may be back in a few years looking for a new nesting site. Osprey’s have been Tracked Near Tollgate Page 2

LEARN GROW MAKE FRIENDS ENJOY Notes from the President Renee Cottrell

“Human subtlety will never devise an invention more beautiful, more simple or more direct than does nature because in her inventions nothing is lacking, and nothing is superfluous.” Leonardo da Vinci

FALL FAIR APPROACHES!! This fun filled, family oriented season finale is our most popular Tollgate event! Saturday, September 17th, 10:00 to 3:00 . All volunteers are encouraged to enjoy the day as a volunteer to assist with the many children oriented crafts. Please see the related article and contact information in this issue and recent e-mails.

NOMINATIONS A call for all interested members! September brings the time to make nominations for the officer positions on your Tollgate Gardens Advisory council (TGAC). All elected positions are voted on every year. This includes President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. Serving as a TGAC board member contributes to our organization in ways that do not require physical labor and thus opens another opportunity to participate. These hours are considered towards (re-) certification and this opportunity is open to any member. You may nominate yourself or any other willing Tollgate volunteer. Please consider this opportunity for the growth of our organization as well as your own personal enrichment. We will take verbal, written or e-mailed nominations before or on the date of the September 30th. We will vote in October for TGAC positions. Feel free to contact me with any questions on the responsibilities of these officer positions, by-laws copy available on request.

PLANT DIVISION DONATIONS Please keep us in mind for all your other fall plant divisions. See Nursery Notes and for the new preferred division listings. We will be doing a smaller scale Fall Plant Sale to showcase the fall blooming perennials. This will be minimally staffed and done in conjunction with the September 24th workday in the Nursery. Please come to browse/buy! Please see the calendar for our activity days since there is still plenty to do! Fall Fair prep, clean-up days, division activity and Fall Plant Sale! Thank you for being a Tollgate Garden Volunteer.

cation Center. Betsy will be there and will have your assignment for you. Also, please make sure you park in the paved lot next to the welcoming table. That lot will be for the exhibitors, handicapped, and the VOLUNTEERS. If we fill that lot early, it will be much easier to direct traffic to the back lot. If you DO park in the back lot tell the attendant that you are volunteering for the fair as this year parking for visitors will be $5.00.

With just days away before the fair, we are finding ourselves a little short on volunteers. Come on down and give us a hand in our largest community outreach event of the year. There are spots open from set up to tear down and all in between. This is a Fun way to get your volunteer hours in. Give Betsy Wilds a call or e-mail and we will set you up. You can even show up the morning of the Fair and I am sure that we can find something that you can help with. Please remember that in the morning we will sign in at the Conference Center and in the PM slots we are signing in at the Volunteer Communi-

I want to give a special thanks to all the people who have been working so hard all year to make this fair the best it can be, there have been lots of people that have spent many hours preparing and setting up this event and without them it would be impossible. We hope to see all of you on the 17th at the Fair and thanks again for your support. 2015 Tollgate Fall Fair

Fall Fair Cookies Fall Fair is coming and with it is the usual request for cookies to serve our many guests. We are asking that you please limit your donations to chocolate chip, oatmeal, or sugar cookies (No Nuts) as our littlest guests have a difficult time picking from a larger selection and it holds up the line. Home baked or store bought makes no difference. We need lots of them. If you are not working the fair, you can drop them off on Friday at the Activity Center. Working the fair? Drop off before your shift begins. As usual, we need several helpers with the food area. We will be doing Hot Dog bag lunches this year ($4) as well as selling each food item separately. Set up and prep will start at 9:00 AM. Please sign up as soon as possible.

Many thanks, Yvonne Page 4

NURSERY NOTES

Peg Palmer The nursery needs your fall plant divisions! As you wait for cooler temperatures conducive to fall gardening activities, check out Tollgate Nursery’s PLANTS WANTED list to see what plants you might have that we also need to restock the Tollgate Nursery! For your convenience, the PLANTS WANTED list is included in this newsletter! Plants are listed alphabetically by botanical name, along with the common name, category of need (Most Needed, Needed, Accepting and Not Accepting) and the approximate number of pots needed. It’s easy to donate your plants to Tollgate – just drop off your labeled and watered divisions in the pop-up structure in the nursery. Specific donation instructions are provided in this newsletter following the PLANTS WANTED list. Please note the specific directions for HOSTA plants since we must ensure that all donations test negative for the Hosta Virus x. Also watch the weekly e-mail announcement with the Saturday workday schedule for updates to the PLANTS WANTED list as we receive donations. In last month’s newsletter, I highlighted 5 “MOST WANTED” plant varieties. Asclepias incarnata/ Swamp Milkweed, Geranium/Hardy Geranium, Monarda/Bee Balm, Paeonia/Peony, and Phlox/ Garden Phlox were highlighted as varieties that we prefer to re-stock this fall and overwinter in the

nursery. Three more varieties that we would like to prioritize for fall donations are: Anenome/Windflower – this broad category includes many that are popular, good sellers, but we have none in stock currently! Sedum groundcovers – multiple varieties including those with yellow or pink/red tones are needed. Tradescandia/Spiderwort – overwintered plants tend to look tidier in their pots than spring divisions, and we’re likely to sell some of our current stock at the fall sale. Both the native (purple/violet) and other bloom colors are needed. While working to re-stock the nursery, we are also beginning our preparations for the Fall Plant Sale on September 24, to be held during the normal Saturday workday from 9:00 ‘til noon. This low key sale receives minimal advertising since we aren’t trying to duplicate the major activity of the Spring event. The purpose of the fall sale is to provide another opportunity for Tollgate volunteers and other supporters to purchase nursery stock and showcase fall bloomers that are unlikely to sell in the spring. PLEASE KEEP BRINGING YOUR 1 GALLON POTS! As you clean out your garage or shed, please sort out your 1 gallon pots and drop them off in the bin inside the door of the shed adjacent to the nursery. We accept only 1 and 2 gallon pots in good condition (1 gallon size is our primary use). Samples of the pot sizes that we accept are tacked to the wall above the bin. Please do not leave larger or smaller size pots as we don’t have room to store them! THANK YOU for supporting Tollgate with your plant and pot donations! If you are interested in joining the Tollgate Nursery Team, please contact Peg Palmer or Renee Cottrell. Palmer - [email protected] Renee Cottrell - [email protected]

Around The Tollgate Farm

Quilting Bees Looking for Additional Team Members Each year, an exquisite quilt is sewn by Tollgate’s very own Quilting Bees. The money raised from the raffle is used to support the lush Tollgate gardens. The Tollgate Quilting Bees have been creating these wonderful quilts since 2005. Below are a sampling of these quilts. The Tollgate Quilting Bees are looking for quilt sewers. If you have sewing experience and have a portable sewing machine, you are qualified. Learn about sewing quilts by working through the process and from our experts. We are a fun group who meets twice weekly during the winter at Tollgate. The 2017 schedule is still to be determined. We generally meet one morning during the week and on Saturday morning from 9:00 to noon during January through March. There might be a couple of days in April as well. We try to pick the pattern, purchase fabric and cut the fabric pieces before year’s end to be ready to sew in the new year. There will be a few specific sewing tools that you will need to bring with you.

Tollgate Calendar 2018

Photos are needed for the 2018 calendar. The calendar for 2017 is nearly wrapped up and out to the printers. Now it’s time to start taking photos of the farm and gardens and sending them to me so that when the weather starts to turn cold (I know what a thought for mid-summer, right!) I can go through photos and start the selection process. Landscape format is preferred. Photos can be sent to [email protected] or submitted on a memory stick, with your name so it can be returned to you. Drop off the memory stick at Roy's office or give to me at a Volunteer Meeting. Cutoff date is November 30, 2016. Thank you in advance. Without your photo submissions the calendar would not be possible. Nancy Roggers

HOSTA DONATION GUIDELINES Please reference the current PLANTS WANTED LIST for information about what types of HOSTA we need donated!!!!

Tollgate has a duty to its customers to make sure we are selling healthy plants. Due to the hosta virus x, we need to be vigilant in making sure our donations are free of this virus. In order to accomplish this in a cost effective manner, please adhere to the following guidelines on what hosta donations will be acceptable to Tollgate. In addition, the Nursery Team will follow the following process to ensure our donations remain free of this virus. ANY PLANTS THAT DO NOT FALL UNDER THESE DONATION GUIDELINES WILL BE DISCARDED.

DONATION GUIDELINES LARGE HOSTA CLUMPS ONLY – Tollgate needs to spend money in order to test each Hosta plant, therefore, we will only be accepting donations that are big enough to be tested once but divided into multiple plants that can be sold. In order to avoid cross-contamination, please wash off the soil and disinfect your shovel using a 10% bleach solution before and after digging each hosta donation. Be sure that your hosta donation is 1 FOOT OR LARGER IN DIAMETER FOR ALL HOSTAS EXCEPT MINIATURES. PLEASE MAKE MINIATURE HOSTA DONATIONS ARE AS LARGE AS POSSIBLE. NO DIVIDING – The donation must still be in the large hosta clump indicated above. In order to ensure that each plant is tested, we cannot accept donations that are already divided. We appreciate that it is easier to move and/or pot up smaller hostas but we need to ensure that we are testing all plants. We will be providing larger containers for temporary planting/storage to put your donations in.

NURSERY TEAM PROCESS TESTING – Each donation clump will be tested by a member of the Nursery Team. Following testing, the hosta will be divided as indicated below. Each plant label will have “Negative for Hosta Virus X” on the plant tag. DIVIDING – Garden tools will be cleaned before and after each division of the donated hosta clump using the disinfectants located in the nursery tool shed. INFECTED HOSTAS – If an infected hosta is found, it will be disposed of using the trash receptacles – not the compost pile. All hostas that were touching or donated with the infected hosta will be disposed of. The container holding the hosta will either be disposed of or cleaned with a 10% bleach solution.

NON-HOSTA DONATION PROCESS Please reference the current PLANTS WANTED LIST for information about what types of plants we need donated!!!!

VOLUNTEER DONATION PROCESS POT UP – Please make sure all donations are potted in some type of pot, so that they will last until our nursery team has time to process them. The nursery only uses 1 or 2 gallon pots (there should be some around the workbench for your use or in the nursery shed), but it is not necessary for you to do all the work! If you are not able to re-pot your donation, you can leave it in any size container. There are larger size pots if you don’t have time to divide a clump. MAKE SURE THEY ARE CLEARLY MARKED – Please make sure your donations are clearly marked as to the plant type. There are plant tags and pencils in the white plastic container on the workbench. Some helpful information is the common name, botanical name and color of the bloom. GIVE THEM SOME WATER – Please make sure your donations have adequate water. The hose is behind the workbench. To turn on the water, move the handle up into the upright position (it doesn’t need to be pumped, just moved to the upright position). Please make sure to turn the water off when you are finished. LEAVE POTTED DONATIONS IN OUR POP UP – There is a green donation pop-up next to the workbench. Please place all donations in the pop-up to protect it from the elements after its recent transplanting. PLEASE LEAVE ALL DONATIONS IN THE PLANT POP-UP – DO NOT PLACE PLANTS IN THE NURSERY ROWS! THIS WILL ENSURE THAT PLANTS ARE CORRECTLY ADDED TO OUR NURSERY INVENTORY AND HAVE PLANT TAGS CREATED FOR THEM.

NURSERY TEAM PROCESS DIVIDE – Any donated plants in pots other than 1 or 2 gallon pots will need to be divided/transplanted into the correct pot sizes. MAKE SURE EACH POT HAS A PLANT LABEL – Please make sure there is a label with the common name, botanical name and color (if applicable) WATER THEM – Please make sure the new donation has adequate water. ADD THEM TO THE INVENTORY – Add the common name, botanical name, color, count and date to the inventory list under the workbench (inside blue “waterproof” clipboard). PUT THEM IN THE NURSERY – Add the new inventory into the correct row as determined by our current layout.
