March 2010

Dear Friends,

As we embark upon our 13th year, we are gratified to serve an outstanding group of talented and deserving New York City students. It is a pleasure to share with you The TEAK Fellowship’s 2009 Annual Report. We pay tribute to the Fellows and Alumni who inspire us every day, and we thank you for your meaningful contributions, which help drive the mission and work of TEAK. Our Fellows and Alumni continue to stand out for their hard work, resiliency, and achievement. They put in the hours, the weeks, and the years to prepare not only to have access to the top educational institutions in the country, but to also make the most of their opportunities once they are there. It is a great honor to be able to award 5 ½-year Fellowships to our students – providing them with year-round academic and enrichment programming. It is an even greater privilege to witness their commitment to the Fellowship and to their educations, and the outstanding adults they are becoming. We have listed on this page a few 2009 highlights of note, and the report further showcases the achievements of the past year. We wish the very best for all in 2010. Sincerely,

Lynn D. Sorensen Executive Director

PREPARATORY PROGRAMS & HIGH SCHOOL PLACEMENT After a 6-month competitive admission process, selected students are invited to join TEAK in the spring of 7th-grade. Students participate in a 16-month cycle of intensive programs to prepare for the highly selective admissions processes at top high schools, as well as for future academic success and personal growth.

TEAK ADMISSION

FALL & WINTER / 7TH GRADE

Through outreach to middle schools and communities across New York City, academically talented, personally motivated, low-income 7th-grade boys and girls are encouraged to apply to TEAK.

SPRING INTENSIVE

SPRING / 7TH GRADE

This 6-week program helps students build the foundation of academic skills utilized throughout the Fellowship and school. Offered after school, 2 sessions per week, Spring Intensive includes math, Latin, and study skills classes.

SUMMER INSTITUTE

SUMMERS / 7TH & 8TH GRADE

This 6-week, full-day, rigorous academic program offers intensive math, English, Latin, science, and research classes, as well as co-curricular courses in drama, dance, drumming, and art. As a complement to instruction within the classroom, the program hosts field trips, a speaker series, and visiting artists. Students also attend test preparation courses for the high school admissions exams (SHSAT, SSAT, and TACHS).

MENTOR PROGRAM

8TH–12TH GRADE

Each student is matched with an adult professional who volunteers to mentor a student throughout his/her Fellowship. Mentors share their knowledge of academic and professional paths, offer exposure to new experiences, and are added advocates in each student’s network.

8TH GRADE WRITING CLASS

SPRING / 8TH GRADE

This 4-month after-school course further develops students’ writing in preparation for the rigors of high school. Through study of short stories, students build skills in reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, literary analysis, and expository writing.

CATS (CULTURE AT TEAK ON SATURDAYS)

My advice to new TEAK Fellows: You don’t always have to be sure. Be spontaneous, take risks, and in the end you will appreciate that you were able to experience so many great things. 6

−Joana

8TH–12TH GRADE

This weekend program allows students to experience the arts of New York City and further develop their cultural education.

HIGH SCHOOL PLACEMENT

8TH GRADE

TEAK provides comprehensive support in each student’s search for the best high school match and helps place students in selective public, parochial, and independent day and boarding schools. TEAK does not assign students to schools nor guarantee that students will be accepted at specific schools. TEAK guides each family through high school options, forming a school list, visits, testing, applications, interviews, financial aid, advocacy, and final decision-making. Students attend after-school and weekend sessions to complete test preparation and reading comprehension classes, and to work on high school applications and interview skills.

TEAK ANNUAL REPORT.10_UG:Layout 1 2/11/10 2:10 AM Page 7

POST-PLACEMENT PROGRAMS & ALUMNI PROGRAM TEAK provides 4 years of comprehensive programs and services to support students in competitive academic environments and to prepare them for admission and success at selective colleges. As Fellows transition to college, they become Alumni of the Fellowship and have access to a vast network of support coordinated through the Alumni Program.

CHECK-INS, HIGH SCHOOL VISITS & FELLOWS’ FORUMS

9TH–12TH GRADE

TEAK Deans are in regular communication with Fellows through email, phone, and school visits. These support systems are in place to ensure academic growth and positive adjustment to the school environment, and to forge connections with teachers and administrators in the Fellows’ lives. TEAK sets high academic standards for its Fellows and monitors school progress and grade reports. Fellows also attend Fellows’ Forums at TEAK to share their experiences with a strong peer network, strengthen critical thinking and study skills, and participate in team building and leadership development activities.

STAT (SPECIALIZED TUTORING AT TEAK)

9TH–12TH GRADE

This one-on-one tutoring program addresses academic challenges and helps Fellows work toward subject and skill proficiency, future college admissions, and the transition to college-level work. Fellows can receive tutorials on a weekly basis over the course of one or two semesters, depending on need.

PUBLIC INTEREST INTERNSHIPS & COMMUNITY SERVICE

9TH–12TH GRADE

Instilled with the philosophy that opportunity brings a responsibility to give back, all Fellows make a commitment to volunteer in Public Interest Internships at non-profits during the summer after 9th grade, and to fulfill an additional 115 hours of service in their home or school communities during high school.

SUMMER ENRICHMENT EXPERIENCES

SUMMERS / 9TH–12TH GRADE

After 9th grade, Fellows attend an outdoor leadership camping trip and participate in a 24-hour community service project. After 10th, 11th, and 12th grades, Fellows can take advantage of TEAK’s partner relationships to embark on new experiences including study abroad, outdoor education, and science research.

PRIVATE ENTERPRISE INTERNSHIPS

SUMMERS / 10TH–12TH GRADE

Eligible Fellows participate in workshops and training in order to apply to and be hired for summer internships at host companies. The aim of Private Enterprise Internships is for Fellows to contribute to a company while developing professional skills and networks, exploring career interests, and earning money.

COLLEGE GUIDANCE COUNSELING

11TH & 12TH GRADE

Beginning junior year, TEAK provides a comprehensive college guidance program for Fellows and families to supplement the resources offered by high schools. TEAK offers individualized college counseling; workshops on the application process, college essays, and financial aid; SAT preparation classes; and college trips.

ALUMNI PROGRAM

COLLEGE & BEYOND

Following students’ Fellowships, this program encompasses general support and community-building services including academic and financial aid counseling; an online directory and forum; and workshops and open houses. A Career Center equips Alumni with the tools and resources necessary to obtain meaningful jobs during college and to embark successfully on professional tracks after graduation.

A TEAK Fellow is always prepared to take on a new challenge. −Mariano

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE A TEAK FELLOW? A devoted, hard-working, intelligent person who doesn’t allow the society they live in dictate how far they can go in life. WHAT CAREER OR PATH DO YOU WANT TO PURSUE AND WHY? Medicine. I love helping people and I have dreamed of being a doctor since I was five years old. WHAT DOES TEAK MEAN TO YOU? TEAK was a great opportunity for me to experience a whole new world - it opened my eyes to many places and ideas. HOW HAS TEAK CHANGED YOU? The consistent attention and drive that TEAK gave me definitely sharpened me as a student and encouraged me to not only act better, but be better. People saw me as a hardworking kid. My parents raised me to be that kind of an individual, and TEAK helped shape me in that way too. Because I did well academically, I led by example, and this opened doors for me. WHAT DOES TEAK MEAN TO YOU? It means stretching your limits just a little bit further because you’ve already reached them and you want to keep going. It means not settling for “best” because there is always “better.” DESCRIBE THE RELATIONSHIPS YOU’VE MADE THROUGH TEAK. My best friend is a girl I met at TEAK on the first day, Lisa Field. She is my friend, my sister, and my conscience. The TEAK staff have been my biggest supporters, hardest critics, and most comfortable shoulders to cry on. I couldn’t ask for a better extended family. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE EXPERIENCE AT TEAK? I LOVED interning as a TEAK Program Assistant last summer. My Fellowship came full circle for me. I really enjoyed sharing my experiences with the new classes and seeing how TEAK has changed since I was a Fellow. HOW WAS YOUR COLLEGE THE RIGHT FIT FOR YOU? UPenn allowed me to try everything I was interested in. I felt like there were no boundaries to my education. WHAT CAREER OR PATH DO YOU WANT TO PURSUE AND WHY? I am currently a Litigation Paralegal for Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, a company I was first introduced to through TEAK’s Private Enterprise Internship Program. I want to go to Law School in the future because I am interested in learning more about how the law works and how, through that process, lives are affected. WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE CAN YOU SHARE WITH 7TH GRADE TEAK FELLOWS? Work hard, even if you cry or doubt yourself, because when they call your name and you walk down that stage, diploma in hand, you’ll realize it was all worth it.
