Why engaging with the private sector for sustainable development?  Rationale for SDC:  SDGs cannot be achieved without business  Shared responsability  No business case for enduring poverty  Business will benefit from more stable, resilient and equitable societies -> risk management and business opportunities  Policy and partnership levers necessary for business in order to deploy solutions at scale  Goal:  Increase number and strengthen sustainable impact of partnerships with the private sector

Collaboration with the private sector Current state: Baseline assessment: what types of PPDPs is SDC currently involved in? What’s their performance and impact?  ~ 30 initiatives with the private sector  ~ 25 million CHF per year  Three types of partnerships: 1. Operational/strategic partnerships (e.g. development/provision of services/products) 2. Responsible business conduct (e.g. UN Global Compact) 3. Policy dialog on sustainable development

How to strengthen collaboration with the private sector? Approach: Build competence center for PPDPs at SDC Develop specific PPDP framework (purpose, thematic area and form of partnership) Due diligence procedure based on key criteria SDC Fund for setting up PPDPs Foster formalized, institutional partnerships instead of punctual collaborations on very specific projects or activities
