THE SPIRIT OF THE EAST

WELCOME For years we’ve looked to the West, in search of the next disruptive frontier. But this time, our heading is to the East, to explore and sample the next wave of disruptive thinking. It is curious how our perception of Asia in terms of technology has evolved over the last decades. We all remember when our perception of Asia was based on cost, Asia was perceived as the main low-cost manufacturing region. ‘Made in Taiwan’ or ‘Made in China’ was seen as a means to find cheap solutions, not innovative answers. The second wave of perception of Asia focused on quality. Companies like Sony and Toyota paved the way to change the perception of the world that Asia clearly stood for unmatched quality, in a wide range of products ranging from cameras to automotive, from home electronics to telecommunications. The famous tagline of Apple products is ‘Designed in

02

| CONNECTED VISIONS ASIA TOUR 2015

California, made in China’, to reassure us that the quality of the iPhones would be top notch. Today are clearly in the third wave of Asian perception, where Asia is showing globally that this is where the innovation happens. Samsung is no longer the manufacturer of ‘follower’ technologies, but is bringing products to market that are more advanced, more user friendly and more innovative than anything that comes out of Silicon Valley. This journey will take us to the two hot-beds of technology innovation in Asia: Shanghai and Singapore. We want to understand what makes the region accelerate their innovative edge, we want to feel the vibes of Asian innovation and entrepreneurship, and we we want to comprehend the reasons why Asia is leading the innovation space today. Our program offers a mix of start-ups, VCs, big leading companies and a number of keynote speakers. We are really looking forward to discover the Spirit of the East with all of you. See you in Shanghai, Peter & Steven

Keynote speech The decade which started in 2010 has already been referred to as ‘the turbulent teens’. Obviously, China constitutes a major source of global turbulence. Starting in 1978, China’s economic and political reforms have dramatically changed the global competitive landscape. China’s renaissance has intensified the level of competition in a variety of industries. Many Western firms now find themselves competing head-to-head with China’s “dragons”. Traditional sources of competitive advantage are being eroded by nimble, fast-moving, cost-efficient and increasingly innovative Chinese firms. From a macro-economic perspective, China needs to innovate. But can it? In this session, we will take a closer look at China’s innovation imperative, the role of the government, SOEs as well as private firms. We will reflect on how Chinese firms have transformed themselves from traditional cost-innovation players to world-class innovators. We will also explore the various approaches Chinese firms have used to remedy the technology deficit (e.g. use of the ‘demand wedge’). For Western firms, the Chinese market offers an unrivalled learning and innovation platform. We will explore some of the best practices (e.g. reverse innovation) which have enabled some Western firms to leverage the unique features of the Chinese on a global scale. Speaker: Filip Caeldries Professor of Strategy and Organization at TIAS School for Business and Society at Tilburg University (The Netherlands). For many years, Filip Caeldries has been teaching the “Competing in Emerging Markets” course in a variety of executive MBA programs in China (Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin). Speaker: Lai Chang Wen, co-founder Marcella Custom

Mr Lai Chang Wen is the co-founder of custom apparel retailer Marcella Custom. It initially ventured onto the retail scene in 2010 with a brickand-mortar store at The Cathay shopping centre. It has five outlets in Singapore and one in New York, and has previously held pop-up stores in London, Sydney and Melbourne. To future expand its presence both offline and online, Marcella launched its online sales platform in April 2011. This experience in ecommerce brought about the realisation that a large gap exists between the promise of ecommerce and the actual deliveries. In an effort to bridge the gap, Mr Lai founded Ninja Logistics in 2014, with a vision to enable efficient transportation. Ninja Logistics differentiates itself with its concentration on ecommerce, particularly its ability to optimize vehicle routes that allows cheaper and more reliable service. Prior to entering retail scene, Mr Lai was an investment banker with Deutsche Bank.
