RESCUING AMERICA’S CHILDREN FROM PROSTITUTION

2 0 0 8 ANNUAL REPORT

1

1

[ Soar ] Children of the Night has rescued America’s children from the ravages of prostitution.

Some of these children have gone on to become school teachers, executives, social workers, managers and computer operators and the less fortunate suffer from mental illness, drug addiction and the AIDS epidemic.

Children of the Night is the only full-service program in North America designed specifically for American children who have been forced to prostitute—girls AND boys.

1

1 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Children of the Night home is open to child prostitutes throughout the United States, and the Children of the Night hotline is ready and able to rescue these children 24 hours a day. Our hotline staff works closely with law enforcement to rescue children from vile, dominating pimps. Our home features an on-site school and college placement program. After youngsters complete our rigorous and comprehensive program of academic and life-skills education, caseworkers are available to provide ongoing case management to hundreds of graduates. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT In 2008, we reached out to The Honorable

M I S S I O N S TAT E M E N T Children of the Night is a privately funded non-profit organization established in 1979 and dedicated to rescuing America’s children from the ravages of prostitution.

David M. Walker, Comptroller General of the U.S. Government Accountability Office to ask for a quantitative analysis of America’s children victimized by prostitution right here in the United States. Our American government has failed to address the needs of our own children who have been forced to prostitute for food to eat and a place to sleep. In many cases, these children are dominated and controlled by violent criminals. We helped more children in 2008, than in years past, but raising the necessary funds to provide adequate care and supervision, food and a school was a grueling experience. We forged ahead to meet the needs of the children who sought refuge in our home, but we did so with a small but committed group of donors. We still met our goals and one of our children placed 3rd in the Los Angeles County Science Fair and 5th in the State Competition. We placed another five children in college during 2008. Child prostitution among American children has become epidemic. And while websites pop up throughout the United States to address the needs of these children, they lack the level of commitment to provide the specialized services required to rescue a child from prostitution.

A website, a hotline directed to a personal cell phone with voice messaging, out-patient counseling or a flop house is not going to meet the needs of these desperate children. Successful intervention in the lives of these children requires comprehensive services. They need somewhere to call home! Children escaping prostitution require specialized care. Here at Children of the Night our children attend our on-site school six hours a day and participate in individualized counseling and have regular checkups by doctors and dentists-often for the first time in their lives! They participate in wholesome recreational activities and hobbies. For most, staying in our home is their first and only experience of living in a caring and stable environment. They need long-term unconditional support and compassionate guidance to escape their horrid pasts and build hope for their future. The United States hosts only 39 residential beds for American children victimized by prostitution and 24 of those beds are right here at Children of the Night. Children of the Night remains the only comprehensive social service program for American children victimized by prostitution in North America. We can’t do the work we do without you. No matter how large or how small your gifts, know that your gifts contribute to the lifechanging work that occurs here at Children of the Night and forever after our children are grateful for a chance at a successful adult life.

Dr. Lois Lee, Founder

Hey Lois, I just wanted to say thank you for everything you do for us. You are of great help to all in need. I don’t think that I would left the lifestyle if it wasn’t for children of the night. I never felt like I belonged anywhere or that people could help me while being placed in different foster homes. I was not a drug addict or a gangster; I was a child prostitute. I never felt like anyone would understand how it felt to be in that population. I always felt like a hoe was the lowest thing you could be and that everyone would be quick to judge. I felt hopeless about being able to leave the lifestyle and about healing from all the abuse in my childhood... until my social worker placed me in your home. Yes, the house was a little chaotic to me, but I fell in love with everyone. I connected to with everyone and was not ashamed about my past one bit. I was allowed to be myself; I was allowed to be that child that grew up too fast. I was able to start the grieving process over my mother’s death, I was finally able to speak up and testify over my grandfather’s abuse, and was able to start healing over all of my horrific experiences. I was finally able to gain some self-worth and speak up to others without hiding my needs. I gained so much in the 7 months of my stay, then in the 17 years I had lived of pain and suffering. Thank you so much for your kindness and dedication in helping our population. No one will dare deal with our population, but you have your arms wide open to love us through patience and nurturing. I love you, Lois Lee. Krystal P.S. Here is poem I wrote,

I just wanna be happy. I just wanna love and be loved in return. I wanna be able to love myself alone first, and then share my love for myself (and life) with someone else. I wanna be able to accept that I will go through my ups and downs, but that it’s ok. I wanna be able to trust that special someone whole-heartedly, with no doubts in the back of my mind. I don’t want my past following me anymore. I will never forget where I’ve come from or how hard it took to become the woman that I am today, but I would like to learn better ways to cope with the pain and still love myself no matter what. This is all I want. If I can do this, anything is possible...

Thank you so much for helping me. I may not always seem appreciative but I am more than appreciative. You guys are there for me when no one else is willing to be. So if you could just tell everyone I said hello and thank everyone from the bottom of my heart. I am not the easiest to deal with but I appreciate it. I have taken two tests for my GED. I took a science and got a 520 and literature and got a 590. On Monday I am going to take my social studies. Just wanted to let you know and keep you updated. I love you like my own mother. I couldn’t have asked for a better person to have come in into my life. I may not have taken every opportunity that you gave me but I took the knowledge and I am trying to apply it now. I just want you to know that I love you from the bottom of my heart. V.

Dear Lois, Thank you so much for returning my call. I have been in communication with my daughter and although the call was bittersweet, at least I know she is still alive—by the grace of God. She finally confessed she was on the streets selling herself and had traveled from No. Cal to So. Cal, was stopped twice in L.A. by the police, and then she headed to Phoenix. She was raped at gun point by a john in Phoenix. She said he had held the barrel of his gun against the back of her head while she was raped. His last words to her were “If you tell anybody, I’m going to find you and shoot you.” She then told me she felt his gun against her scalp and felt nothing— no fear of his killing her—no thoughts of what she might be leaving behind —she felt nothing at all. My heart broke, again... She then told me that she needs to talk to me in person because she is having issues regarding her spirituality and her purpose. As stinging as her comments were (about her rape and her reaction), I felt myself disassociating from her news. With the latest turn of events, I am even more committed to bring her story to the media’s attention. In as much as it will be a catharcis, it is also a mother’s cry for help —a mother’s cry for justice. Educating our society is paramount in that the deaf ears and blind eyes that circumvent the fight must be forced to acknowledge the plague of child prostitution in our country. She turned 18 the end of May and though the powers that be consider her an adult, you and I both know she is a child in a multitude of ways. I would be lost if it weren’t for Children of the Night—so would Katherine. Although my daughter’s stay there was brief, the fact is that she was given a safe haven and a support system that kept her away from the demented johns and cruel pimps is a blessing. I have faith in the knowledge that she can stop the self destructive course she has chosen. I appreciate the ongoing counseling services and life coaching your foundation offers. COTN has been a catalyst of support for me. Knowing there is a toll free

number for her (and I) to call and speak to somebody without fear of judgement keeps an ember of hope burning. Knowing your foundation looks beyond the now and strives to give these kids options, by recoginizing their denials—and their obstacles (whether from their own hand or not) is truly a blessing. I will always be grateful for your help AND your committment to my daughter’s recovery. I know that without your help, I would have lost her completely. Even though she returned to the streets and has narrowly escaped death, I believe her day will come. I have the confidance she will return a much more experienced, enlightened, and empowered. It’s called faith. I want to thank you for making it easier to hold on to. With Warm Regards, April

“KINS” Kids in Need of Service

2008 CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT ALUMNI CASE MANAGEMENT After youngsters complete our rigorous and comprehensive program of academic and life-skills education, caseworkers are available to provide ongoing case management to hundreds of graduates. We are always here for these children as a source of support and guidance when they need us! Files about their soul-crushing pasts are kept confidential and destroyed after three years. If they reach out at any time to ask us for help, we provide it—whether they are attending college, raising a family or dying of AIDS. Alumni services are categorized into GRADS or KINS (Kids In Need of Service) based on the degree of assistance they require. In 2008 there were 638 “alumni” receiving services; 378 GRADUATES and 260 KINS. Grads require little assistance. Our Grads are generally self-sufficient, employed and often attending a trade school or college. They need support in obtaining financial aid to attend college or assistance in updating a résumé. Sometimes they need financial assistance to purchase college books. Our KINS sometimes require direct financial assistance to pay for food, rent or a bus pass. Some request referrals to one of our experienced volunteer therapists who can help them deal with their difficult pasts. Some need help applying for Social Security Disability Benefits, because they are so disabled by horrific experiences. Most do not have parents they can turn to when they are in need. Children of the Night, as part of its mission, continues to provide ongoing assistance to any child who has become part of the Children of the Night family, and to help each child become a successful adult.

I T ’ S A L A DY ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

It takes nine months for somebody to be born and today is the day. Today is May 26, 2009 and a beautiful young lady was born. It takes a lot for somebody to change their attitude to mature, to set goals in life, and to actually achieve those goals. There is a lot that can happen in life; good or bad. And I am happy to say that within the exact nine months that I have been here I have completely changed my life for the better. I had the nourishment I needed in here to keep going and to do what I needed in my life to succeed to my best expectations. I am pleased to say that today I am a young lady born. I was once an immature young girl living for the “fast life”, but not anymore. It has officially been the 9 months that it takes for someone to be born. And today I am a YOUNG LADY BORN!!!

FLATBACKING

Some young girls just needed the attention being a prostitute was never their intention constantly manipulataed & forcably used a child of someone who has been sexually abused Addiction to drugs or to the street developing a habit she couldn’t beat or was it a pimp who took advantage her life & money for him to manage

MY STRENGTH

When I didn’t have anyone to forgive me, You said you would always be therefor me. You pushed me to change my life around, You made me smile when I had a frown. When I was weary you gave me the one thing that matters... You gave me strength from your heart to your daughter You were my mother and my father You never gave up on me; you (kept pushing You allways told me to do what I wanted to do find pursue my dreams You give me the strength to want to be in this world You made my day (you made my year) by saying I’m your favorite girl! You gave me strength; I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you You are my strength and I love you!!!!

Did she ever know to kneel and pray or was she taught to kneel for pay avoiding the attention of the police advertising that her body was for lease Clothing that causes an outrages spectacle unconscious of being a sexual receptacle raped, robbed and beaten in shiny rental cars considered a criminal and put behind bars He’s a customer, a john, or a trick watch the clock it has to be quick whatever it takes she tries to survive flatbacking on the street 24-7-365

GIRL SCOUT GOLD AWARD– MELISSA PURSLOW GIRL SCOUT LIAISON, CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT

Searching for an organization to support for a Gold Award project is not an easy task. In order to be successful, you have to have initiative, perseverance and passion which is what I had when I chose to support Children of the Night. I wanted to personally educate my community about the issue that child prostitution plays in our country. Through different speaking engagements, I was able to deliver over 26 speeches educating medical professionals, law enforcement professionals, women executives, local businesses, and religious institutions about the issue of child prostitution and how Children of the Night is making a huge difference in these children’s lives. After creating a press kit with informative material about the organization, I used this as a tool at all of my speaking engagements. The responses to the speeches were overwhelming, this small community of individuals allowed me to gather over $3,200 worth of wish list items.

A VICTIM OF THE STREET

In addition to my informative speeches, I also supported two money earning events. I planned, created, and hosted a Bunko Party that included 48 individuals from my community. The support I received equated to $800 for Children of the Night. My second event, a Mystery Murder and Sale, required a bit more preparation, creating a script, recruiting fellow scouts to act as the cast, and gathering auction donations from the community for the Mystery Sale. The success of this event was seen as my community came together to participate in an interactive Murder Mystery and Sale. During intermission, the guests took the opportunity to bid on silent auction items and interact with the cast of the Mystery Murder, trying to figure out “who did it”. The evening’s success earned over $3,300 for Children of the Night.

With some runaways or throwaways The street is the first place they go Learning the struggle to survive And who is a friend or a foe Some go back the homes Some fall for the pimp’s con Some learn their value From the wallet of a john They lose their self respect And look for love all the love But go to jail alone After committing a crime And then one night When they’re desperate to break luck They go to a deserted alley With a guy in a pick-up truck The next morning they find her In a dumpster, laying still and cold And that’s when they find out She was only fifteen years old This was my sister My daughter, my son And I cannot Condone what they’ve done But I hope with your children You will never have to meet That police officer who says your child Was a victim of the street Joseph B. Haggerty Sr., retired Metropolitan Police, Washington, D.C.
