The Sixth Sunday after Epiphany

13 February 2011 8:30 & 11:00 a.m.

Welcome Visitors: We welcome all who worship with us today. Here are some notes about our congregation and our facility to help you feel at home among us. Nursery A staffed nursery is available for children from birth through age 5 on the sanctuary level down the hall past the drinking fountain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents gather their children before communion so that they can come to the Table together. An usher will be glad to direct you. Restrooms are located on the sanctuary level just past the library. In addition to Men’s and Women’s rooms there is also a Family room with a changing table. Count Me In Form is that little slip of paper in your worship folder. We ask all worshipers to complete this each week. Special prayer requests may be made on the back of the form and if there are special “sign ups” you can do that on the back. Place it in the offering plate as it is circulated during the service. Grace Station is an outreach of the church office available every Sunday morning. There you will be able to receive information about our church and to report information such as address, phone or email changes, prayer requests and news about illness or hospitalizations. Current newsletters and program information are located there. Look for the “check in desk” in the church gathering area. The Latte Cart is open between services on the 200 level, one floor below the sanctuary. Payment for lattes and other specialty beverages is by donation and proceeds are used to support various special projects or ministries. Fair trade coffee and teas are served. Most Sundays there are treats and fellowship in the Narthex immediately following the service Check out the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church website at www.prlc.org for more information on our congregation, our ministries and many opportunities for service and study.

“Child of the Light”

Kathleen Thomerson

Welcome Confession and Forgiveness In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence for reflection and self-examination Holy and healing God, we confess that we have fallen short of the life you desire for us. We choose our priorities over your commandments. We divide the body of Christ. The earth groans under our demands. Have mercy, O God. Restore us and all things to health, that we may do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with you. Amen. Hear the voice from heaven: "You are my own, my beloved." You belong to Christ, and through the power of the cross + your sins are all forgiven. God is faithful and will strengthen you, that your light may shine before others, that you may be God's holy people in the world. Amen. Prayer of the Day Let us pray…O God, the strength of all who hope in you, because we are weak mortals we accomplish nothing good without you. Help us to see and understand the things we ought to do, and give us grace and power to do them, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. First Reading: Deuteronomy 30:15–20 15

See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity. 16If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the LORD your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess. 17But if your heart turns away and you do not hear, but are led astray to bow down to other gods and serve them, 18I declare to you today that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. 19I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, 20loving the LORD your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the LORD swore to give to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God.

Epiphany Response “Arise, Shine”

Martin How

Congregation:

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 3:1–9 And so, brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but rather as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. 2I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for solid food. Even now you are still not ready, 3for you are still of the flesh. For as long as there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving according to human inclinations? 4For when one says, "I belong to Paul," and another, "I belong to Apollos," are you not merely human? 5 What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. 6I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labor of each. 9For we are God's servants, working together; you are God's field, God's building. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God.

Alleluia Verse 8:30 Cherubs choir only 11:00 “Heleluyan (Alleluia) Muscogee”

Charles H. Webb

Congregation:

Holy Gospel: Matthew 5:21-37 The holy gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. 21 You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, 'You shall not murder'; and 'whoever murders shall be liable to judgment.' 22But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgment; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, 'You fool,' you will be liable to the hell of fire. 23So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. 26Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. 27 You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' 28But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell. 31 It was also said, 'Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.' 32 But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

7

33

Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, 'You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.' 34But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37Let your word be 'Yes, Yes' or 'No, No'; anything more than this comes from the evil one. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon Hymn of the Day #772 “Oh, That the Lord Would Guide My Ways” Prayers and Peace Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs… ...Gracious God Hear our prayer. Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. Offertory Prayer Let us pray…Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were gathered together to become one bread, so let your church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into your kingdom, for yours is the glory through Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen. Opening Dialog and Proper Preface

It is indeed right and our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ, who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Sanctus

Eucharistic Prayer Blessed are you, O holy God: you are the Life and Light of all. By your powerful word you created all things. Through the prophets you called your people to be a light to the nations. Blessed are you for Jesus, your Son. He is your Light shining in our darkness and revealing to us your mercy and might. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his preaching and healing, his dying and rising, and his promise to come again, we await that day when all the universe will rejoice in your holy and lifegiving light.

10

By your Spirit bless us and this meal, that, refreshed with this heavenly food, we may be light of the world, revealing the brilliance of your Son. Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen. Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread and Invitation to the Table Distribution of Holy Communion We welcome all who desire to receive the Lord’s body and blood for the forgiveness of sin and renewal of life to join us for Holy Communion. Please come forward at the direction of the ushers. Red wine or white grape juice is available as each communicant chooses. Gluten-free wafers are available. Young children and others who do not commune are invited and welcome to come forward for a blessing. Post-Communion Blessing and Prayer The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace, now and unto eternal life. Amen. Let us pray… Ever-faithful God, you have taken us again into your arms and nourished us as your dear children. Lead us and guide us, that we may share our bread and your healing light with those who hunger and thirst, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Farewell and Godspeed for Don Boelter Benediction The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. In the name of the Father, and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Dismissal Go in peace. Serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. Postlude

What IS that star? Most people familiar with the Christian tradition immediately identify the star as somehow connected to the Wise Ones who came from the east, followed it, and ended up at the manger offering Jesus their symbolic gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. But that’s about where it ends in most people’s minds. Truly, the star is a sign of and for the ENTIRE Epiphany season. This year, it will be hanging above us for a long, long time. This is the longest Epiphany season we can ever experience. The length of the season is tied to the date of Easter, and this year Easter is very, very late – April 24. The Lenten season doesn’t even begin until 9 March which is when Ash Wednesday will fall. So where is this star pointing, long after the Wise Men have been stored back in the attic and buried underneath the Epiphany season stories from the prophets, St. Paul, and the Gospel of Matthew? How are stories about fisher folk, salt and light, justice and mercy, connected to the rays of a star? All of these stories and the theme of this season remind us that Jesus is the Christ for all nations. Beneath every star that shines, Jesus is Lord. The star’s presence above our worship guides us, just as it once guided the Sages, into paths that lead to Jesus, and the discipleship of Christ. The star also reminds us that Christ is a cosmic Christ. He comes not only to redeem earth, or earth’s people. He comes as a Savior to renew the entire Creation. Like those who sought Christ long ago, we need the guidance of God to rich Jesus, and the star will remind us for days and days to come that God will shine a light on our path and lead us as we follow the way to our Savior.

Pastors Networking Lunch – February 24th If you or someone you know is currently looking for work, you should know about our Networking Lunches. We share a warm meal together, update our respective job searches, discuss a passage of scripture (Matt 6:24-34), and pray over the arduous process of living through a recession. This community is here to support and encourage each other, and we are incomplete without you. We’ll meet on Thursday, Feb 24th at 12 noon in the Tree of Life Room. Please mark the Count Me In form or contact Patrick in the office if you plan to attend. Knitters/Crocheters Needed We are in need of several white baptismal prayer shawls for the Easter Vigil this year. You can see samples in the library in the Prayer Shawl area. I’d like to add six small ones (approx 40”x40”) and four large ones (approx 40x60) to our supply. Can you help? Please sign up on Count Me In. You are welcome, but not required, to attend the Prayer Shawl meeting on the second Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. to noon in the library. See Pastor Piro or Shirley Shaw for more information. Mirinesse Women’s Choir Mirinesse is Old English for “joyful women”. The singers of Mirinesse Women’s Choir are an auditioned group of approximately sixty women, ages 20-70, who enthusiastically and joyfully share their love of music, and strive to model the highest level of musicianship, artistry and individual vocal ability. Since 2006, Mirinesse has thrilled audiences in Seattle and around northwest Washington with its beautiful sound and facility with difficult repertoire. This year’s concert, entitled “Hope Sings Eternal”, includes both ancient and modern texts, powerfully set to music that will comfort and inspire. Highlights include two Hebrew Psalm settings by Glick, Te Deum Laudamus by Sacchini, Chant for Great Compassion (incorporating Buddhist chant and Chinese poetry) by Abbie Betenis, poetry by Teresa of Avila, Wendall Berry and James Joyce beautifully set by composers Joan Szymko, Eleanor Daley and Eric Whitacre.
