FROM THE PASTOR “Each winter as the year grows older, we each grow older, too. The chill sets in a little colder; the verities we knew seem shaken and untrue. When race and class cry out for treason, when sirens call for war, they overshout the voice of reason and scream till we ignore all we held dear before.” - Each Winter As the Year Grows Older (ELW 252) Have you ever wondered why the new year happens in the middle of the winter? It's an interesting choice, really. And it is a choice. There's no celestial reason that the first day of the new year falls on January 1st rather than, say, late August. We could have it at any time of the year—in the Spring might make more sense; after all, there are new things springing up around us, and in fact, some cultures celebrated the new year on the vernal equinox: March 20th. And yet, we have the new year start in January. And also we have the church year start at the beginning of Advent—as we descend into the darkest days of the year. It's odd we mark the cold and the dark as a time of new beginnings. In her book, Learning to Walk in the Dark, Barbara Brown Taylor makes the observation that new life starts in the dark. “Whether it is a seed in the ground, a baby in the womb, or Jesus in the tomb, it starts in the dark,” she writes. I wonder if it was an awareness of this that led us to place this time of new beginnings at the darkest time of the year — if it was a way to remind us that while we might have a preference for sunlight and warm, long days (I know some of you prefer the winter), it's actually at the darkest of times and in the darkest of places that newness sprouts. It seems like a good reminder for our living. This season can be a bit much. It can be a time marked by loss of those we've loved—whom we miss acutely during these times where tradition, family, and memory take on sacred intensity—or sorrow for the loss of the light (SADD), or loneliness, or stress from our own self-inflicted (and culturally reinforced) holiday fervor. And outside of this season, too, we go through times of darkness, of depression, of stress, of anger, of sorrow. And while these seasons and times in our lives might feel like (and are) times of death —like winter surely is— they are times when God's promise, “I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:19) is especially alive. The seed lies in the ground waiting. On the branches of the trees, buds prepare to burst open with new green. And a young virgin bursts into song at the hope of a new world growing inside her while a child who will be named John dances in his mother's womb.

“Yet I believe beyond believing that life can spring from death, that growth can flower from our grieving, that we can catch our breath and turn transfixed by faith. So even as the sun is turning to journey to the north, the living flame in secret burning, can kindle on the earth and bring God's love to birth. O Child of ecstasy and sorrows, O Prince of peace and pain, brighten today's world by tomorrow's, renew our lives again; Lord Jesus, come and reign!” - Each Winter As the Year Grows Older (ELW 252) Pastor Lena Warren

Sharon Martini [email protected] LUTHERANS AND ROMAN CATHOLICS IN DIALOGUE On October 27th, Pope Francis and the leaders of the Lutheran World Federation presided over an ecumenical prayer service in the Lund cathedral, the first time a pope has commemorated the anniversary of Martin Luther’s revolt with such a symbolically powerful gesture. Francis quoted Luther and praised him for having restored the centrality of Scripture to the church. “The spiritual experience of Martin Luther challenges us to remember that apart from God, we can do nothing,” Francis said. Francis and the Lutheran federation president, Bishop Munib Younan, drew sustained applause at the end of the service when they signed a joint declaration pledging to improve relations through dialogue, while working together to heal conflicts, welcome refugees and care for the planet. The goal of the theological dialogue, the statement said, was to bring Catholics and Lutherans together at the Eucharistic table. On January 15th at 4:00 p.m. we will show this prayer service in Fellowship Hall, and have an opportunity to share our Lutheran and Roman Catholic backgrounds and hopes for the future. Mark your calendars and join us, and invite others to share in this dialogue, which will begin our ongoing com-

President’s Annual Report 2016 It has been an exciting year as we warmly welcomed our new pastor, the Rev. J. Lena Warren. The congregation and Pastor Lena continue to know each other better with the help of her program, “Lena’s Listening Tour.” We all look forward to working together on the joys and challenges of this community of faith. Sunday Service average attendance has increased to 180 from 176 in 2015 on an October year-to-date basis. Church Giving this year is up about 3% compared to last year and expenses are considerably down at about 15%. Personnel and Property costs are significantly under budget due to an open position and reduced energy expense. However, in 2017, we hope to add a new staff position which will challenge our giving by another 3%. It has been an honor and joy to help lead this wonderful Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, which could not be done without the magnificent support of church leaders and volunteers alike. Respectfully submitted, Kenneth H. Merring Council President

CREATIVE PLAY NEWS Our children are all excited for the holiday season. They are all busy creating unique gifts for their families. There is nothing more precious than seeing the children's excited faces when they wrap their presents for their parents. Our 4-year-old children will be performing a short skit, called Santa's Workshop, for their families. There will be some beautiful singing and colorful costumes to show off . Throughout the month of December, Creative Play invites its families to share the true meaning of the holiday, by participating in two special sharing opportunities. Our annual Giving Tree is decorated with the donated hats, scarves and gloves from our Creative Play families. These items will be donated to the families in Appalachia. Together with the Church, we ask our families to bring a Christmas gift wrapped in white paper to school, which will be distributed to families of St Peter's in the Bronx. What a wonderful way to share in the true meaning of this blessed day. The children will be entertained by our favorite performers, Beth and Scott, who will have the children singing and laughing with their musical performance. In January, our registration for the 2017-18 (WOW) will begin. If you are an alumni or church member, applications are available in the school office. We encourage families to come visit us during the months of December and January, or set aside some time on January 21st for our OPEN HOUSE. The hours are 12:30 p.m.2:00 p.m.; come by and see our classes and meet some of our staff who will happily answer any questions you may have about our wonderful school! We wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year!! Maureen Connolly, director

Good Shepherd is offering a special “Longest Night” service on Wednesday December 21, at 800 pm, in our sanctuary. Come out and join with us in sharing and hearing prayers, scripture, and music that acknowledge that God’s presence is for those who mourn, for those who struggle—and that God’s Word comes to shine light into our darkness.
