December 2016

One of my earliest Christmas memories is making paper chain decorations with my brother and sister to hang on the tree and around the family room. While sitting in front of the television listening to various Christmas cartoons we would color link after link; pausing long enough for short breaks between cartoons. Occasionally, as Christmas cartoons would be interrupted with other programs, we would have a contest to see who could make the longest or the best decorated chain. Needless to say there were times when things got a bit rowdy, but never too rowdy - after all Santa was watching! Rowdy or not however there was something special about preparing for Christmas; something special in sharing joy and laughter with my brother and sister in the making of paper chain decorations. Even though it has been at least twenty-five years since we last sat together and made paper chains for Christmas, not a year goes by that I have not pondered the joy, laughter, and love we once shared. Nothing can compare to what we shared and experienced. Nothing can replace the time spent preparing for Christmas, especially time spent with my family. I'll never forget those wonderful memories! They have helped shape my understanding of the Christmas event itself...Emmanuel - God with us, revealed in us. Often as life moves forward, we forget to prepare for Christmas. By no means does that mean our houses go undecorated or that we do not spend an allotted time Christmas shopping. It does mean, however, that as time moves forward we rarely stop to prepare for the laughter, joy, love, hope, and peace of Emmanuel - God with us, revealed in us. Therefore besides coloring links, buying presents, hanging stockings, and decorating your tree, have you prepared yourself and your family for Emmanuel - God with us, revealed in us? Are you ready for Christmas? The Christ child has already been born, but he is coming again! Are you ready for his return; are you ready for Christmas - God with us, revealed in us? To help you get ready, let me suggest a preparation strategy. First, read the Christmas story in Scripture with your family and talk about its meaning for us today. Second, focus on the wonderful gifts that God has blessed you with. Third, repeat steps one and two every day throughout the Christmas season. Finally, make it a personal goal, after the season is over, to continue doing those focusing exercises. There is a richness that glows from within as the joy, love, and happiness of Emmanuel - God with us, revealed in us, is shared. Something wonderful, unique, and powerful takes place within the lives of those who share this remarkable event. Don't miss out! Don't miss out on the memories. Go! Prepare for Christmas. Sit beside your brother, sister - family and share the joy of Christmas. May the Christ child sing you a lullaby! Merry Christmas! Tim 1

C.O.M.E. 2017 Music in the Mountains: The Hills Are Alive! We are really excited about the District fundraiser for C.O.M.E. 2017! Each church is asked to sponsor a musical group or other musical performer at a parish hymn sing. This can be a choir, a soloist, small group, combo, anything that represents the music of your church. Some churches may even join together to form one group. Be creative! The group that raises the most money from each parish per capita based on average attendance of their church (or group of churches) will have the honor of performing at the District Conference on April 30, 2017, at United Methodist Temple. (Joe Kenaston has promised that the event with be all about C.O.M.E. with a very short business meeting.) The church (or group of churches) that raises the most money per capita district wide will honored with a banner they can display until the 2018 C.O.M.E. Our two mission projects that we will be supporting will be Ebenezer Community Outreach Center and House of the Carpenter Church and Community Ministry. We will also be learning about JoAnn Davis, our new Church and Community Worker for the new Hope in the Mountains Ministry, and Dan and Sue Lowther, the new directors of the New Vision Depot disaster response facility. Ideas for fundraisers range from special offerings, bake sales, no-bake bake sales, car washes, dinners, auctions, pie auctions, silent auctions, dinners, etc. All money should be raised by your parish hymn sing. We will also be collecting goods and supplies needed by the missions we are supporting. We have contacted those missions about what they need and will be distributing that list in the next newsletter. DON”T WAIT!!! START NOW!! ONLY YOU CAN MAKE THIS PROJECT A SUCCESS!!!!!!!!! 16
