Tea Day at the Museum By Carrie Uusitalo

THIS PAST SUNDAY, The St. Joseph Island museum celebrated its annual Tea day. We started out feeling a little nervous about whether or not the weather would cooperate with us. In the morning, things looked rather gloomy. Dark clouds circled above our heads but after a brief yet intense little rain, things cleared up, the sun came out and we were ready to start the festivities. Our tents took some jostling from a few quick wind gusts throughout the afternoon, but the day eventually settled down into an almost-perfect setting for our activities.

however, was the calf that Nancy and Gary Underhill brought from their dairy farm. Hope everyone had a chance to fill out a ballot for the ‘Name the Calf ’ contest. Gail Murdock was also on hand to speak on behalf of the Ploughman’s Association and she gave us a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of the association and its annual Plowing Matches, right back to the beginning. As promised she had her trophies on display. This year marks the 80th an-

We were treated to an afternoon in a lovely pastoral setting, listening to some old time traditional Canadian fiddle music courtesy of the Island’s own ‘Rusty Strings’, as well as country, bluegrass and ‘mountain’ music by their alter egos, ‘Mountain Moonshine’. I saw many people enjoying their homemade pie and tapping their toes along with the rhythm of the music. Speaking of pie, things were busy indeed at the pie booth! Museum board members were kept busy serving up many varieties of homemade pie all afternoon. If you had a sweet tooth this was the place to be. We had many special guests too. Dawn Stinson had a wonderful display for the Algoma Dairyman’s Association. There were interactive puzzles and games for children, and she even treated us to homemade ice cream that was made right there at their display. The real star of the Dairy Association presentation

niversary of the St. Joseph Island Plowing Match, which will be again held in late August. Mike Mantha, our MPP also joined us for most of the afternoon. Since this was his first visit to the museum, Curator Pat Fleming gave him a tour of the grounds. In his remarks, he said that he was awed by the site, our buildings and the numerous artifacts we have here. In fact, he said he would do his best to promote our museum throughout Ontario. He also offered his praise of the rich heritage of both the Dairyman’s Association and the Ploughman’s Association, also congratulating the Ploughman’s Association on their 80th Anniversary. He followed up his remarks by presenting special certificates, recognizing the history and achievements of both groups. Afterwards, he invited his audience to join him across the street for the unveiling of the new museum sign, which was custom made by Ted Alleway of the Iron Thistle and painted by Gord Hawdon. It is very unique with a beautiful metal leaf work frame . It also incorporates the original bell from the Island’s historic Orrell School. The bell was donated to the museum in 2012, after having travelled over the years from St. Joseph Island to Michigan, then to Florida and then to Sault Ste. Marie and finally back home at last.

tended Tea Day this past Sunday.” says Museum Curator Pat Fleming. “The names are so many, I can’t mention everyone, but a big Shout Out to you all!” We have yet another wonderful afternoon coming up on Saturday, July 26th, when the museum hosts its annual Teddy Bear Picnic from 1 pm to 4 pm. It’s a favourite with young and old. Be sure to come out with your Teddy Bears and join the fun!

Amidst all of the music, activities and festivities, a steady stream of smiling strollers meandered through the museum’s buildings, taking in all of the many exhibits and perhaps taking a little stroll of their own down memory lane. It was a wonderful afternoon for everyone. Margaret VanLanderghem won the $50. donated by Don’s Garage for guessing there were 111 paper clips in the container. The correct number was 117. “We would like to thank all who supported, helped or atMike Mantha & Pat Fleming discuss an exhibit

THANK YOU

The St. Joseph Island and Area Food Bank Committee would like to thank everyone who helped us at the Tractor Trot. A special thank you to Dave, the walkers. and all who made donations along the route. Your generosity is greatly apreciated

We were traveling to Thunder Bay for a family funeral on July 11th when we ran into serious noises with our car. Since we had friends on the island, we stopped to get help. Woody’s Island Automotive diagnosed the problem and fixed it, even though it was Saturday. We were able to proceed on our trip west on Sunday. How thankful we were that Woody’s Island service was so great and above the call of duty. Another reason why living on the island is special. Thank you, Sheila and Jacques Carriere, Ottawa

 2 PEOPLE, 1 KAYAK...continued from page 8

Linda and Gary are both highly experienced kayakers and they know what they’ll be up against in such a challenging trip. It will be tough, but they’re up for the challenge. We can follow their progress online at www.mi-waterforpeople.com or on Facebook/Mississippi River Voyage. Let’s help them on their way! To donate to the Dekocks’ challenge, visit www.crowdrise.com/mississippirivervoyage. So good luck, Linda and Gary, from your Island friends and neighbours. Your friend Bonnie Barthelmes offers her own wish as well: “Good luck and don’t get your hair wet! We will be thinking of you!”
