Rail projects are set to account for the largest proportion of infrastructure spending over the coming 10 years, with up to $35bn being invested in the sector. The investment programme will centre on building: a long-distance rail network that will provide links to both Saudi Arabia and Bahrain a four-line metro system serving the Doha area an underground people mover in the West Bay area of the capital a light rail system serving the Lusail development. Responsibility for the programme has been vested in Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company, which is wholly owned by the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA). Qatari Diar has established a subsidiary, Qatar Railways Company (QRC), to be in charge of developing the appropriate legal and legislative frameworks and to oversee the management, operation and maintenance of all local railway projects. QRC also represents Qatari Diar’s 51 per cent interest in Qatar Railways Development Company (QRDC), which was set up in November 2009 with Germany’s DB International holding the remaining 49 per cent stake. QRDC is the sole entity responsible for developing and www.meed.com/research

“Ashghal will continue to provide school contracts for smaller Doha-based contractors” Future projects Education City will continue to provide considerable opportunities for contractors. As of February 2011, a further $1.2bn-worth of contract work was either at the contractor prequalification or tendering stage. In addition, there were a handful of other planned projects at the design stage that are scheduled to be completed by 2014/15. These include a national data centre, an extension to the convention centre and a people mover. While the Qatar Foundation will remain a major client for leading local and international contractors, Ashghal will continue to provide a steady flow of school project contracts for smaller Doha-based contractors. Private sector schools will also offer construction opportunities, but on a much more irregular basis. www.meed.com/research

the route of the Musheireb wadi and flow with brackish water. Musheireb is being undertaken in phases. Phase 1A, which encompasses most of the heritage zone, is due for completion in 2012. Phases 1B, 1C, 2 and 3 are due in 2015, while phase 4 is scheduled for 2016. Dohaland has so far awarded more than QR2.2bn ($600m)-worth of construction contracts for phase 1A of Musheireb. In early 2011, the phase 1B construction package was issued for tender, with bids due to be submitted in May 2011.
