THE 14TH SLOAN-C INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ONLINE LEARNING

The Power of Online Learning Improving Learning in a Networked World

NOVEMBER 5–7, 2008 CARIBE ROYALE ORLANDO, FLORIDA

THE 14TH SLOAN-C INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ONLINE LEARNING This year’s conference theme, “Improving Learning in a Networked World,” was chosen by the conference committee to emphasize ways in which online and blended learning are changing to reflect both their place in the global community, and emerging social technologies. Thus we particularly looked for presentations that explored issues of diversity and international applications of online learning, and which emphasized the more global, societal, and workforce dimensions of online higher education. We also looked for presentations that addressed blended learning, open educational resources, social networking tools, and other uses of new and emerging technologies to support learning and the educational enterprise in general.

Featuring Keynote, Plenary and Closing Addresses, more than 150 Presentations in 5 Concurrent Sessions, 18 Pre-conference Workshops, Interest Roundtables, Special Thursday Night Entertainment, Expanded Exhibit Hall including the Email Lab.

Of course at the same time, we wanted to be sure to keep our focus where it has always been -- on research, theory and practice in online and blended learning and we believe we have. We had a record number of proposals this year and we are very excited about the presentations we will be offering. We are also extremely excited about our keynote, plenary, and closing speakers – Terry Anderson, Curt Bonk, and Liz Burge --who we think will bring us new insights on improving learning in a networked world. We hope you will join us in what promises to be an engaging and fruitful conference. Meg Benke, Conference Chair, Empire State College Karen Swan, Conference Co-chair, Kent State University

“The content of the conference is a powerful draw. The timing and location complete the trifecta. The conversations with others are a bonus! I have come away from each conference with information and ideas that I can apply directly to my practice.”

“This was an inspiring and challenging experience. It renewed my commitment to innovation even in the face of resistance.” Orlando, Florida

KEYNOTE ADDRESS NOVEMBER 5, 2008, 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM Terry Anderson is Professor and Canada Research Chair in Distance Education at Athabasca University – Canada’s Open University. He has published widely in the area of distance education and educational technology and has co-authored or edited five books and numerous papers. Terry is active in provincial, national, and international distance education associations and a regular presenter at professional conferences. He teaches educational technology courses in Athabasca’s Masters of Distance Education program. Terry is also the director of CIDER – the Canadian Institute for Distance Education Research (cider.athabascau.ca) and the editor of the International Review of Research on Distance and Open Learning (IRRODL www.irrodl.org). The complete text of his most recent edited book The Theory and Practice of Online Learning is available as an Open Access resource at cde.athabascau.ca/online_book

“Social Software and Open Education Resources: Can the crowd learn to build great educational content?” Open Education Resources (OERs) promise to radically reduce the cost of educational content production. Yet early research shows less than optimal pickup or sharing of production by either distance or campus educators. Can social software tools provide the tools and supportive communities needed for effective OER production, use and re-use? Can educators as both producers and users of OERs develop the types of sophisticated networking tools used by Open Source Software development to create world class learning resources?

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BANQUET AND ENTERTAINMENT Michael C. Anthony is one of the most popular entertainers in America today. Michael’s shows are mind boggling, totally interactive and absolutely hilarious! He has filled theaters internationally and has been seen on NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox. Michael will demonstrate amazing mental feats that were never thought possible. Astonishing predictions made months prior to the show are revealed! He can tell audience members their birth dates, social security numbers and even what word they are thinking of. At one point, an audience member is asked to call a friend or relative anywhere in America. Michael then proceeds to read their mind over the cell phone! During another one of his crowd favorites, spectators are given a chance to win $1000 as Michael whips the audience into a game-show like frenzy! The Wednesday night banquet and entertainment are included in the full conference registration.

“Without a doubt, one of the most amazing, funny entertainers we have ever brought in. People went home in pain, their sides hurt so much from laughing.”
