GENERAL: These small but powerful converters provide a source of stabilised low voltage suitable for running many different items of equipment. Their output is ohmically isolated from the system chassis and constant current limited. Continuous operation in current limit is allowed making them suitable for battery charging. Connection to the system is by a ‘cigar’ plug (12 & 24V Input) lead or just a flying lead (48V input), and output is by flying lead (5V - 18V units) or 2.5mm concentric connector (18V - 48V units). The converters are mainly designed for use with notebook computers that have two wire input. These converters are current limited above a certain level of demand. The output isolation of the converter from system ground ensures that earth currents do not flow. CONNECTION: Input: For 12V and 24V units, the converter just plugs into a cigar type socket, using the cable mounted plug provided. Don't leave the converter plugged in when not in use. It will still slowly discharge the battery. 48V input units must be directly wired to the 48V supply, fused at the battery source with a 3.15A fuse. The input cable has a YELLOW sleeve fitted close to the case to identify it. The RED wire connects to battery positive (+) and BLACK wire to battery negative (-). Output: 18V output or below: Un-terminated cable. 21V output or more, 2.5mm ‘barrel’ connectors, centre positive. Red wire or White stripe positive, Black wire negative. The warranty is not affected if the purchaser fits a different suitably current rated connector. BATTERY DRAIN: These converters take about 1A at 12V, 0.5A at 24V or 0.25A at 48V for every 10 watts of load. Input current may reach 10A (12V), 5A (24V), 2.5A (48V).

Specification Notes: 1) The main variation of output voltage with load is due to the resistance of the output cable (0.01 ohms). An internal potentiometer is available to adjust the output voltage to compensate. 2) The output current limit is deliberately made a function of unit temperature to maximise delivered charge. Output current will fall, still within the quoted range as the unit attains working temperature. 3) Case temperature change must be taken into account when calculating output variation. 4) The adapter is designed to run with a case temperature approaching 60C under heavy load conditions. SAFETY WARNINGS. Ensure that the battery voltage is correct for the model. Do not reverse the polarity of the input voltage. Use at least 2mm2 wire to connect the converter to the battery. Thin wire will cause fire hazard. Fuse Battery at source. The case is connected to the negative input (48V input versions floating). Only operate the unit from a battery. Do not connect the unit to any other power source. For inside use only. Do not expose to moisture. Do not cover. The unit will run hot when under elevated load. Disconnect the battery before changing the fuse. Do not operate the unit with the cover off. Turn off when not in use to avoid battery drain. Not to be used for life support. Do not use in a moving vehicle without the vehicle manufacturer’s consent. Do not use for marine or aviation applications without our written agreement. OTHER CONVERTERS IN RANGE The range of converter products manufactured in the UK, by SMET Ltd., allow a broad range of battery voltages to be converted to commonly required output voltages. These converters are suitable for powering most domestic and professional electrical appliances that have a DC input. Wherever you are you can run your laptop, power your CD/cassette player, charge your camcorder or simply charge batteries from your main battery.

One of the most important things, when selecting the right converter, is to know the highest power rating of the range of equipment you wish to run, and whether use is solely to power a device or to charge the battery within a device. Converters have different short term and continuous power capabilities, which must be matched with the equipment they are to run. Note that nearly all low voltage DC devices will have a power plate stating the required input voltage and current and voltage polarity required.
