MUSIC APPRECIATION Lesson 3 As you have already learned, music composition comes in many styles and forms. We will address some of these in the coming weeks. Each form has a unique characteristic. As you discuss these with your teacher, make a note of how many different styles you have already played, are currently playing and will play in the future.

One Part Form: is a single movement or composition that is complete, with no contrasting parts.

Let’s look at Prelude in C Major BWV 939 by JS Bach

This prelude is built around a basic chord structure of I-V-I. Identify the chords in each measure by placing the Roman numeral below the Bass Clef. There is one measure that has a secondary dominant which we have not discussed at this point. Your teacher will help you identify this particular chord.

Binary Form: is a single movement that can be divided into two parts: A & B. This form can be found in SIMPLE or ROUNDED form. Simple Binary form is movement that has two defined parts, which are labeled A & B. Neither section is repeated. During the Baroque Period, many pieces were written in this form. Look at the piece below. This is one of the most famous Baroque pieces ever written and certainly one of the most often played by piano students. The Minuet in G from the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach was once thought to be composed by JS Bach. We now know that several other composers contributed to this very famous notebook. This piece was actually written by Christian Pezold.

Rounded Binary form is a movement that has two defined parts, which are labeled A & BA. The first part A is restated at the end of the B section. This Quadrille by Haydn is an example of rounded binary.

Ternary form is a movement with three parts labeled ABA. Section A is repeated in its entirety after the B section. This Ecossaise by Beethoven is a perfect example.
