MUSIC & LITURGY NOTES: Last week I began to write of the opportunity for us to respond to the universal call to holiness that we received in baptism through service in the liturgy as a liturgical minister. This week, I wish to focus on the way the members of our vibrant music ministry are also serving as liturgical ministers in our church and responding to their baptismal call. The Church teaches us, “God has bestowed upon his people the gift of song. God dwells within each human person, in the place where music takes its source. Indeed, God, the giver of song, is present whenever his people sing his praises” (Sing to the Lord, 1). Music is a sign of God’s love for us and of our love for him. It is therefore fitting that we praise God in our worship with music. In a perfect society, every person would have a musical education, but sadly, we live in an era where music has become not only a spectator activity in where we listen instead of participate, but also an artificial activity in that sound is generated through speakers, an artificial source. While professional musicians, myself included, serve an important role as a musical leader, our leadership does not negate the necessary participation of all other persons, whether they be trained or untrained musicians. Music is a gift given to all of us. Sure, I like to reminisce about the days when most homes had a piano and the larger homes even had a room specially designated for music. It seems like televisions and video games have replaced musical activity in most family past times. Not to say that modern technological amenities are bad, but they shouldn’t replace the role of music in our families, in our communities, and in our churches. The research has been done and the results are published in numerous outlets – learning music and participating in music making is a life enriching activity that promotes better physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Now, don’t everyone go out tonight and buy a piano, but I hope that you will consider taking part in our music ministry at St. Jane’s this upcoming year! Saint Augustine does not receive enough credit for saying, “He who sings prays twice.” █

BETHESDA, MARYLAND

“Let us do everything in a spirit of peace and love! Attracted by the example and virtues of Jesus Christ our Lord who did the will of His Father, let us walk and even run in the way of God's divine will, not letting ourselves be pulled and pushed about like puppets. Unless we do everything lovingly from a sincere and simple desire for God's glory and the salvation of the world, we will never succeed in obeying this Divine Will. Instead, we will render fruitless the graces of our way of life.” - St. Jane de Chantal
