IN OUR PARISH HOLY HOUR FOR VOCATIONS On Saturday, June 7, the parish held a Holy Hour for Vocations. During Eucharistic Adoration, the Joyful Mysteries of the rosary were prayed; led by Maggie Gleeson, Shawn Flynn, Grace Liotta, Ryan Gleeson, and Michael Emerson. Fr. Cusick then reflected on what vocations are and the importance of listening to God with your heart and mind. The Litany for Priests was also prayed before closing with Eucharistic benediction. The annual Holy Hour for Vocations was well attended. T HANK YOU FROM THE LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR “The love and support that you gave the Little Sisters of the Poor [on April 26/27] was a sign of your genuine charity. The collection amounted to $6,786.43. Your gifts are truly a sign of God’s loving and caring providence, which will help us provide the best possible care for many elderly in need who come to make their home with us. Thank you all! Our residents join with us in promising you our daily prayers for all your many intentions. God bless each and every one of you!” - The Little Sisters of the Poor and Residents of the Jeanne Jugan Residence, Washington, D.C.

MUSIC AND LITURGY NOTES This weekend marks the final Sunday for our Parish Choirs' 2013/14 music season before they embark on a well deserved three month summer break. Please join me in thanking these dedicated members of our parish for sharing their time and talent with our parish family week after week. Singing in a choir is a special activity. Choir members grow in their faith through the sharing of beautiful music to the praise and glory of God's name. Working with these talented individuals has been the highlight of my first year on the job at St. Jane's, and it is my constant prayer that the music we create together not only enhances the faith of each singer, but of each of you in the pews, as well. While the choirs are on break, it's up to everyone to carry on the musical leadership of our liturgy. If you have never sung in church before, why not start now. I promise, you'll be happy you did. Be well, Russ.

ARCHDIOCESE OF WASHINGTON SYNOD On Pentecost Sunday, June 8, Cardinal Wuerl convoked the first Synod of the Archdiocese of Washington as part of the commemorative of the 75th anniversary of the archdiocese. Statues and related recommendations have been developed over the past two years through a series of work sessions. Participants represented the many ministries in the parishes and the archdiocese, including input collected in our parish in early 2013. The Synod documents will appear in the June 19 Catholic Standard and are on online at www.adw.org/synod. Pilgrimage as part of its 75th anniversary celebration. Visit the more than 20 churches and shrines that tell the story of the Church in the Archdiocese of Washington. The pilgrimage is self-guided, now through September 7. It is also free, but you will need a Faith Quest passport to participate. If you visit eight or more sites, you will be invited to a celebration including Mass, a reception, and prizes for participants. There will be two guided walking tours—June 14, parishes in and around Capitol Hill; and August 16, shrines and chapels in the Brookland, DC neighborhood— which require reservations. For more information, contact Jenny Bernal de Baker (301-853-4551; [email protected]) or visit www.adw.org/faithquest. PUT YOUR FAITH INTO ACTION "Politics is one of the highest forms of charity because it seeks the common good," says Pope Francis. And getting involved is easy. The Maryland Catholic Advocacy Network, an outreach of the Maryland Catholic Conference, is an email network that keeps you informed on public policy issues and puts you in direct contact with lawmakers to share your views. Visit www.mdcathcon.org and click on the Catholic Advocacy Network button to join today. ACTIVATED BY FAITH: GET THE FACTS After your alarm clock rings on Tuesday, June 24, resolve to go vote in the Maryland Primary Election, whether it’s after your first cup of coffee or before your evening workout at the gym. It is important to vote on June 24 because in Maryland, many races will essentially be decided in the primary election vs. the general election – often by less than 100 votes. So every vote counts! It’s not a presidential election year, but there are some major seats up for grabs, including: The Office of Governor, eight U.S. Congress seats, and 188 seats in the Maryland General Assembly. It can be intimidating to investigate where candidates stand on issues. Fortunately, the Maryland Catholic Conference can give you a hand with our surveys of Governor, U.S. Congress and General Assembly candidates on five issues of importance to the Catholic Church. Visit www.mdcathcon.org/elections for the Conference’s elections information page; at the very top of the elections page, you will discover links to Governor, Congress and

General Assembly candidate surveys. You will notice that candidates were given the chance to comment further, if they wished. 6TH ANNUAL QUO VADIS CAMP The 6th Annual Quo Vadis Camp for high school men will be held at Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD on July 20-23. These are great days of fraternity, learning, vocational discernment, and fun. Hosted at beautiful Mount Saint Mary's Seminary, Quo Vadis Camp includes time for prayer, hiking, games, sports, talks, and lots of great food. Registration is required; participants should arrange for their own transportation to/from the Mount. To register, visit www.formstack.com/forms/dcpriest-quo_vadis_camp_2014. For more information, contact the Office of Priest Vocations ([email protected]; 202-636-9020).

STEWARDSHIP The Gospel today is sometimes called “the Gospel in miniature” because it so concisely sums up the Gospel message. In even more condensed form, “God loved. . . God gave. . .” is the paradigm for stewardship — we give because we love. PARISH SUPPORT

LEARN, PRAY, VOTE: ABORTION IN MARYLAND VS. OTHER STATES Your Maryland tax dollars fund about $2.5 million in Medicaid abortions annually, and Maryland is one of only four states and DC that voluntarily fund elective abortions. Our state’s abortion rate is nearly 40% higher than the national rate, and continues unabated, even while rates decline nationally. Your vote can help change those numbers and build a society more respectful of human life and dignity. This summer’s primary elections are when many races will be decided and include races for governor, U.S. House of Representatives, and the entire Maryland General Assembly. Unaffiliated or independent voters are not eligible to vote in the primary unless they change their registration to Democrat or Republican. Learn about the issues, pray for guidance, and vote on June 24. Learn more at www.mdcathcon.org/elections. PARISH CALENDAR Sunday, June 15—Saturday, June 21, 2013
