About First NZ Capital First NZ Capital has one of the most experienced and knowledgeable teams in the New Zealand market with global resources through a strategic alliance with international investment bank Credit Suisse.

Our History The decision by Credit Suisse Group to restructure its presence in New Zealand led to the creation in May 2002 of First NZ Capital, a new firm formed by management and employees to carry on Credit Suisse Group’s former New Zealand retail, institutional, research and investment banking business. Our history goes much further back than this though. We’ve been in New Zealand for 50 years – in fact, our history traces its roots back to the early 1960s, and the firm of R A Jarden & Co. First NZ Capital is wholly-owned by its employees and operates from offices in Auckland, Wellington, Nelson and Havelock North.

What is investment banking all about? Individuals do not interact with investment banks on a regular basis or take specific courses in investment banking at university.

As a result, the investment banking profession is often not as well understood as other professions such as retail banking, law, accountancy, or medicine. First NZ Capital’s investment banking division undertakes work in the following fields in New Zealand and overseas: • a dvice on, and execution of, takeovers, mergers, acquisitions and divestments; • s tructuring and issuance of equity and debt securities; • corporatisation and privatisation advice; • c orporate restructuring and strategic planning; • c orporate advice on general financial issues including valuation, capital structure and dividend policy; • s tructuring and execution of derivative products; and • n ew venture, project and investment feasibility analysis.

Graduate and Intern profiles Susannah Neild Susannah completed an internship at First NZ Capital during the 2012/2013 summer break, and is returning to Victoria University to complete her BA in Italian and French and BCA in Economics and Finance.

“My experience at First NZ Capital has given me a broad insight into how an investment bank really operates. On starting my internship, I was included in a number of diverse projects - and even got to attend a client meeting within the first couple of weeks! After only a week I was flown to Sydney to do an invaluable week-long training session at Credit Suisse. Throughout the summer I have worked on a number of projects including building pitch books, updating and making new databases, and analysing major companies. As First NZ Capital covers many different industries, there has been ample opportunity for me to work on a diverse range of transactions. The team has to be one of First NZ Capital’s strongest assets. Everyone is incredibly approachable, and more than willing to help. There are no hierarchical barriers, and everyone works together to get the job done. There is a big focus in the company on team work, and this extends outside of the office. There have been many occasions to socialise with the team including Monday morning breakfasts, weekly touch games, and various dinner and get-togethers.”

Stu Mckelvie Stu joined First NZ Capital in early 2012 after completing a BCA (Hons) in Economics and Finance at Victoria University.

“Throughout my time at First NZ Capital I have been stimulated, challenged and inspired. I have been involved in a variety of projects, ranging from the takeover defence of Fisher & Paykel to the sale process for a leading Australasian company. What I have valued most has been the exposure First NZ Capital provides. Whether it’s meeting with the CEO of an NZX 50 company or participating in a conference call, the chances to learn from leading industry participants are unparalleled. While your first year can be full-on, you are never without support. First NZ Capital has an approachable team who are always willing to help. Graduate training programmes in Sydney and London broaden your skillset, and offer an exciting opportunity to establish social ties with colleagues from around the world. The unique culture at First NZ Capital encourages graduates to pursue responsibility. From day one, you become an integral member of the team. If you are serious about a career in investment banking, First NZ Capital is the place to start.”

In addition to graduate positions we are also hiring a small number of outstanding students to complete summer internships at First NZ Capital during the 2013/2014 summer.
