THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH THE FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST DEACON ORDINATION JUNE 12, 2016

RINGING OF THE SANCTUS BELL

Some traditions ring “Sanctus Bells” to call worshippers’ attention to “the holy.”(Sanctus means “holy” or “sacred.”) Today, the Sanctus Bell rings to signify the holy around, among, and within us.

ORDAINING ACT OF ORDINATION

Gretchen Aylsworth, Marcella Burk-Groon, Stuart Cantrell, Terry Huneycutt-Horn, Allan Maltbie, Kristen Smith, Jim Wise

LITANY OF ORDINATION (drawn from Galatians) Pastor: “…the only thing that counts is faith working through love.” Deacons: “For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ ” Pastor: “Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Deacons: “So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time if we do not give up.” Pastor: “So then, whenever we have an opportunity, Deacons: let us work for the good of all, All: and especially for those of the family of faith.” PRAYER OF ORDINATION God of love and compassion, you poured out your life in service in your Son, Jesus Christ. By word and example he taught us to find fulfillment in giving ourselves, and greatness in serving others. Bless those called to be Deacons,

who lead us in service and caring, especially Gretchen, Marcella, Stuart, Terry, Allan, Kristen, and Jim, whom we ordain this day. Empower them by the grace of your Spirit, that your whole church may give its life for the sake of the world, in the name of Jesus Christ who came not to be served, but to serve. Amen. LAYING ON OF HANDS All are invited to participate in blessing our newest Deacons in the spirit of this ancient biblical ritual. Pew sections will be invited—one section at a time—to move forward and offer a brief word of blessing to each Deacon around the Table. Those who choose to remain seated are encouraged to pray.

MUSIC DURING THE ORDINATION The Gyft of Charitie

Carlton T. Russell

O Lord which dost teach us, that all our doings without charity are nothing worth; send thy holy ghost, and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of charity, the very bond of peace and all virtues, without the which whosoever liveth is counted dead before thee: Grant this for thy only son, Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen. CONGREGATIONAL HYMNS

Jesu, Jesu Sister, Let Me Be Your Servant

OFFERING OUR GIFTS One: In celebration and with love, let us celebrate the good news! Many: On this day of joy and gladness, these servants are duly ordained as Deacons of Binkley Baptist Church. One: May their lights shine! All: Let all our lights shine; let ‘em shine, let ‘em shine, let ‘em shine! OFFERTORY ANTHEM

This Little Light of Mine

Trad., arr. George Mabry

This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine. Every day, I'm gonna let my little light shine. On Monday, God gave me the gift of love; on Tuesday, peace come from above. On Wednesday, told me to have more faith; on Thursday, gave me a bit more grace. On Friday, told me to watch and pray; on Saturday, told me what to say. On Sunday, gave me power divine, just to let my little light shine.

* DOXOLOGY

Please sign with the leader or simply sing.

Dolores Hruby

Go now to love and serve the Lord; go now to love and serve each other; made strong by the Word which we have heard, fed by the love of Jesus Christ. Remember that when we love each other, we love God: and when we serve each other, we serve God.

POSTLUDE

Richard Unfreid

Upon leaving the sanctuary, please be mindful of those choosing to use the postlude as their final act of worship.

We are grateful for the musical gifts offered today by The Summer Choir; Dale LaRue Bailey, tenor; and Stephenie Sanders, soprano. WELCOME TO BINKLEY! Binkley Baptist Church is a community of faith on a journey that calls for questioning, humility and conviction. As followers of Jesus, we embrace spiritual growth, mutual care, and service, assured that as we serve our neighbors, we joyfully serve God. Intentionally inclusive, we welcome people of all races, sexual orientations, and cultures, respecting diverse religious experiences within the church and beyond. We invite others to join us in our commitment to peace, justice, and care for creation. In a spirit of Christian love, we welcome you. Guests, welcome! We are so glad you have chosen to worship with us today. Please leave us your information in the Friendship Register so we can get to know you better. The floral arrangement on the communion table is given in loving memory of W.C. Strowd, and in memory of all Binkley members no longer with us who have June birthdays, by Mable Strowd and Sandra Johnson. Today’s cover art is a line drawing by Mlle. Annie Vallotton, prepared originally for use in Robert G. Bratcher’s New Testament translation, Good News for Modern Man, and is a simple yet powerful depiction of Paul’s instruction to the Galatians to “help carry one another’s burdens.” Hearing assistance devices and children’s worship bags are available in the Narthex before service begins. Music reprinted by permission under OneLicense.net A-701712 Thank you for serving in the Nursery Jeanine Gangloff, Hser Ku, Julie Nutter, and Tay Nay Sar. * The Congregation standing as each is able.

Donate supplies: For VBS, June 20-24, we need: clean glass baby food jars (or other similar jars such as pimiento jars), smallish rubber bands, old, clean nylon stockings, empty plastic spice tubes from Southern Season, sandpaper squares or rectangles, spray bottles (clean and empty, to borrow), flashlights (to borrow), clear fish bowl (to borrow), biodegradable packing peanuts (not styrofoam). These can be brought to the church office and placed in the box marked “VBS”. Questions? Call or email Claudia Templeton: 919-452-7905; [email protected]. Share your gardening talents: Got a Green Thumb? Or just too many shoots on that airplane plant or your ‘hen and chicks’? Now is a good time to root those shoots so they will be strong plants to donate and sell at the Binkley Yard Sale. As you are gardening this spring, round up duplicates or extra pots, garden hoses, trowels, rakes, and such. Put them aside for our sale in August. Many thanks! Yard Sale Proceeds: Binkley’s share of this year’s Yard Sale will be divided between Family Success Alliance and Eyes, Ears, Nose and Paws. • Eyes, Ears, Nose and Paws is an organization which trains dogs to assist persons with mobility or health issues. Dogs are trained by prison inmates so that the program benefits both inmatetrainers and the people receiving service dogs. The hope is that there will be enough money to open another dog training site at a second prison. • Family Success Alliance is a consortium of local charitable and governmental agencies which is focusing its programs on two areas of Orange County where families live on incomes below the county average. Family Success Alliance proposes to use its share of Yard Sale proceeds to support the Kindergarten Readiness program and to fund children’s savings accounts for college. Research shows that establishing children’s savings accounts leads the participating children to look forward to and begin to proactively plan for their future, which in turn improves their academic achievement. In short, it opens an avenue of hope that resonates in a child’s life.
