tailgateTALK What an exciting time to be in the cattle business with Hereford cattle. I am proud to see sale reports from all over the nation listing breeders from Texas as their top buyers. This can only expand and improve the genetics our Texas breeders make available to the industry. The THA Executive committee met recently and passed a few items of interest to THA members. First, they voted to discontinue collecting an assessment fee with dues but to
6 TEXAS HEREFORD • April 2014
By Jack Chastain, Editor increase the annual dues to $125 that includes dues, subscription, a free listing to place listings on our for sale page and the benefits provided by our corporate sponsors. Next they voted to reinstate sponsorship of a pen of three bulls at the Fort Worth Stock Show. Details will be worked out with the Fort Worth Show. We have begun work on the 2014 annual membership directory. Every member has been mailed a herd listing form and ad reservation form. Please
update your listing. I cannot stress enough how important it is that current members provide us with correct and complete information regarding phone numbers, e-mail addresses, directions to your ranch and herd information. We especially want to update those of you who have developed ranch web sites and can include you with a link from our web site. Now is the time to select and hold a bull or group of bulls for our Fall Classic sale in Buffalo on October 22. We are also trying to build a female sale with this sale. We will accept both registered and commercial Herefords as well as other breeds and crosses Now is also a good time to select and breed a pen of heifers for our 46th annual replacement heifer show and sale to be held in Fort Worth on Sunday, February 1, 2015. Plan to select at least one or two extra to make sure you can get the minimum of ten for the pen show. We plan to have our heritage pen of cattle. Now is also a good time to select an entry for the annual Cowtown Select Sale. THA through some generous sponsors has encouraged our junior exhibitors to enter the open show by providing a cash award in the form of a scholarship. I solicit a few more donors as well as all junior exhibitors to consider bringing their heifers to the National Show in Fort Worth. The junior must be present and be at the halter of his or her own animal to be eligible for the $5000 high and $2500 second high placing heifers. Our juniors are busy preparing for another great state show and field day held jointly with TJPHA. The event will be held June 18-21 in Belton. As an advisor I can safely say that this event could not happen without the support of the Hereford breeders around the entire state. I encourage all members to respond favorably with both monetary and volunteer help. All THA members could benefit from watching our youth in action. I encourage all THA members and readers of this publication to support the proposed state beef check-off program. Eligible producers can vote at any Texas A&M Agri-Life Extension Service county office during regular office hours between June 2 and June 6. Hereford demand is as strong as ever and now is as good a time as ever to promote your herd with an ad in our publication. Remember “Advertising does not COST--IT PAYS!” ★

Myth Busters! Myth #1
Myth #3
Cross-Breeding Diminishes Quality. Wrong!
All Herefords overcome Myth #1 and Myth #2. Wrong!
Current documented research proves that the Hereford Cross (especially on black cattle) brings more premiums and more PROFIT!
Marbling ability for the general Hereford population in the latest analysis is actually going down. But, not at Desert ★ Mart!!!
Myth #2 More feed is the answer. Wrong! While fat can cover up a lot of faults; stout, genetically higher performing cattle SHINE even more on basic feeding programs without having excessive trim.
Widely recognized as pioneers in collecting and emphasizing carcass merit, the latest data shows that our already elite marbling ability is still climbing! And… so are the ribeye areas and $CHB numbers. Plan now to visit this summer and to attend our Annual Sale on November 20, 2014.
