The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) (Standard 17) Purpose of the Standard To provide details of the operation of the OCDSB Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) to the Ministry and to give members of the public information to which they are entitled SEAC was established in keeping with Regulation 46 /97. The Role of SEAC • to advise the Board with respect to the establishment, development, and delivery of programs and services to students with special education needs • to participate in the OCDSB annual budget process as it relates to special education by appointing a SEAC member to the Budget Committee • to strongly encourage the public to bring special education issues to the attention of SEAC through the public question period at SEAC meetings • to pass motions which are presented as advice to the Board • to appoint a non-voting representative to the Committee of the Whole to ensure that the interests of students with special education needs are considered in Board deliberations • to review procedures and make recommendations • to organize agenda preparation meetings that precede monthly SEAC meetings with a focus on issues of concern and requests for information; • to respond to reviews of special education programs and services • to assist parent(s)/guardian(s) in advocating for special education services for their children • to inform parent(s)/guardian(s) of students with special education needs of their rights and responsibilities • to inform parent(s)/guardian(s) of policies and procedures relating to students with special education needs The Role of the OCDSB • to provide personnel and facilities necessary for the proper functioning of this committee SEAC Meetings • occur on the last Wednesday of each month (except July and August) at 7:00 p.m., at the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, 133 Greenbank Road, Ottawa (Nepean), Ontario • all members of the public are welcome and encouraged to attend

Composition of SEAC • consists of three trustees, representatives of local associations, and three community members committed to furthering the interests of students with special education needs Members of the public are encouraged to make their views known to SEAC by attending monthly meetings and/or contacting representatives directly. Focus in this area will continue for the 2016-2017 school year. SEAC will participate on the sub-committee to provide input on implementation of the program. SEAC will further apply the learning from this review to inform their participation and recommendations on the upcoming Gifted Program review, as a key area of focus in 2016-2017. In addition to providing regular input on issues that affect students with special education needs, areas of specific focus identified by the Committee for the 2016-2017 school year include striking a sub-committee to review and provide input on the 2016-2017 Budget, as it relates to special education, and partnering with the Parent Involvement Committee in the implementation of their Parents Special Education Report/ June 2016
