Everyone is welcome and so are ideas. Readers who are looking for a book, or have an idea for a speaker or event are encouraged to share—in person, via e-mail or by leaving a message. Those who are homebound, or can’t make it to the library due to illness, disability or the weather, are encouraged to contact librarian Joy McCorkhill about possible alternatives. Some may have noticed that the “Future Site of Jefferson Public Library” sign is missing, but no worries—the sign will reappear when weather permits. There is also a great new sign that shows how the fund-raising effort for the new library is progressing. Those who shop on Amazon can support the library using AmazonSmile. Past, Present, and Midge By Midge Rosebrook They Both Begin With “P” In my experience plastic money—which is touted as a much faster way to pay for stuff than paper money— isn’t faster, it’s really slower than our age-old paper counterpart. Case in point: Three weeks ago, my spouse and I traveled down to Concord to shop in the Steeple Gate Mall. After filling our wheel cart (please don’t tell our granddaughter we used it) with gifts to overflowing above the drawstring, all, by the way, slated for you-know-who, we finally ended up at the checkout line in one of the main stores. Readied with a fistful of coupons in one hand and her little red store credit card in the other, my bargain-hunting better half extended her coupon-holding hand, passing them all to the store clerk. Then she places her card in the slot of the little black box on the counter. The lady clerk quickly puts up her hand as if she is practicing for a job as a traffic cop, saying, “Oh, not yet ma’am, this will take a few minutes.” For the next, say, 10 minutes, the lady clerk shuffled through them like a blackjack dealer, eliminating this one, accept-

ing that one—for one, she went to the computer to verify its money-saving due date status. Meanwhile, the Mrs. tried to put her card into the slot of the little black, savings account depleting square box on the counter again. “Don’t put your card in there yet please!” the clerk blurted out. “I’m not through checking in all of your money-saving coupons yet!” The wife pulls her card back, saying, “Sorry.” Now bored, I’ve been watching the other clerks as we stand there waiting and notice how quickly their lines are moving through. Why is it that we always seem to either get the slow ones, or the first-dayon-the-job trainees ? Are the rest working on flat rate? By now, we have been standing there for what seemed like a good half-hour, almost longer than it took us to shop in the first place. I could have changed the oil, checked the fluids and mounted and balanced four snow tires in that time! Back to our clerk, who finally finished ciphering through the savings coupons, she now gives the green light to slip that card into the slot and then, “Oh wait, don’t put it in yet!” She yells. “One coupon, the biggest 50-percent off one, for whatever

reason, got eliminated, when I punched in the remaining .89 cents, left in one of your gift cards, sorry! Let me do the procedure again.” Folks, at this point, I’m thinking we’ll need to book a room at a motel for the night. “OK, ma’am, that one took this time—and wow, look at how much you’ve saved!” In my old job, time was money. I’m thinking the next time we’ll ditch the coupons, ditch the plastic and use paper,

just to save my sanity. It is my hope that all of you, have a safe and glorious Christmas and are able to be with those you hold dear. We are all here only for a little while, so take in every moment. Make every minute count as if it’s the last one, because those precious memories will always be there for you to bring back, in your quiet moments, and you’ll smile again. God bless us every one!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR To the Editor: Upon receipt of your latest issue, I perused with interest a letter submitted by a Jefferson resident who is initiating a petition in an attempt to prevent UH-60M Helicopters from utilizing the Whitefield airport for training purposes. The writer states that the UH-60 is the loudest of all military aircraft and by far the loudest helicopter. Both of these statements are in error. Several military (and commercial) aircraft are louder than the Blackhawk. Additionally, in the helicopter family alone, we find that the Blackhawk creates 80decibels at 500 feet and less than 65 decibels at 2,000 feet. Noteworthy is the fact that the Bell 407 Chopper creates 85.5 decibels at 500 feet and the AW139 creates 89.1 decibels at 500 feet. Not only is CORRECTION There was a typographical error in the instructions for finding the petition at www.change.org listed in last week’s letter from Donna Laurent, concerning the issue of the N.H. National Guard’s proposal for the Mount Washington Regional Airport. The item is most easily found by entering the words “Black Hawk Helicopters” in the search window.

the Blackhawk not the loudest of aircraft by many decibels, it is not even the loudest helicopter! (Source: Cameron Allison, Aero Engineering, FAA.) The Blackhawk is also equipped with noise suppression gear. Lastly, the noise effect of helicopter and/or aircraft on wildlife is negligible. Eight-engine B-52s landed and took off from Pease AFB, and wildlife at Pease adapted and flourished there. The same holds true for Shaw AFB in South Carolina, where I was stationed with F-4s, F-101s and RB-66s, landing and taking off day and night with no adverse wildlife effect. I also personally witnessed the same at Redston Arsenal, Marshall Space Flight Center, in Huntsville, Ala., where I was also stationed for several years. Rocket and jet engines are significantly louder than any chopper, believe me. Yet deer hunting flourished along with other wildlife. I for one, welcome the Blackhawks in Whitefield, Lancaster, Bethlehem, or any other locale selected by the military! Lou Ouellette Lancaster (Continued on Page 5)

Letters to the Editor (Continued From Page 4)

To the Editor: Interesting to see by a previous letter to the editor that a Blackhawk helicopter is louder than any other military vehicle. Having spent years on the flightline, wearing double ear protection—which still wasn’t enough—I may have some idea of what the loudest military vehicles might be. You would never hear a Blackhawk over the roar of an F4 with afterburners on during takeoff. When B52s and KC135s were doing a MITO (Minimum Interval Take Off) on two runways on Guam, the whole north end of the island shook. Nope, sorry, but the Blackhawk, by comparison, is one of the quieter military vehicles. Will it bother wildlife? Having spent years chasing deer off the flightline, I’d say no. They don’t care. Birds nest and live all over the place near airfields. They don’t care. I’ve watched deer grazing within a few feet of jet aircraft doing runups at the end of the flightline. You could fly a hundred Blackhawks overhead and you’d never hear them over the jet roar. One day, while chopping and skidding pine in Maine, a game warden came by. I asked him why, as long as the chainsaw or skidder was running, deer and other critters would come right up to me, and when I turned them off, they ran or flew? He said it was because they are conditioned to fear a human, but not a human with a running engine. If you want to see an area with few crit-

ters, go to a hiking trail. If you want to see a lot, go where there is human noise with engines. If we really care about not disturbing animals and birds, we should outlaw hiking trails—allow ATVs and snowmobiles only. Check out any hiking trail and you’ll find very few signs of animals. Look at and around snowmobile and ATV trails, and there’s plenty of animal sign. This is especially so around logging operations, or in the years after logging an area. The only way any critters are going

to be affected by Blackhawks in the area is having some entertainment to watch, or in the worst case, if a Blackhawk lands on a critter, which is unlikely. I don’t have a dog in this fight over the National Guard at the Whitefield airport. I don’t care any more than the critters would. But I just had to respond to the “loudest” thing. Perhaps there would be some fuel savings by having Blackhawks in the area where they practice. Flying a hundred

miles from and to Concord must burn off a heck of a lot of Jet A or JP4. At 145 gallons per hour, there would be a little under 300 gallons saved per sortie. There might be some money saved. It costs $2,199 an hour to fly a Blackhawk. So, round trip from and to Concord, that’s around $4,000 per flight in savings. I don’t know how many sorties they fly per year, but 4,000 bucks is 4,000 bucks. Is it good idea for the Guard to have a facility in Whitefield? Darned if I know. THE NORTH WOODS WEEKLY

Four GNWCA Series Concerts Planned from January to March in Colebrook The Great North Woods Committee for the Arts has announced the next four shows in its popular concert series at the Colebrook Country Club. Four diverse shows will offer something for everyone: Canadian folk, good old rock and roll, foot-stompin’ bluegrass and a St. Patrick’s Day Celtic music bash. “Last summer we debuted our new series, bringing back together the GNWCA’s proven track record for bringing quality performing arts to the region and the Colebrook Country Club’s longstanding commitment to the community in a beneficial series of exciting music programs,” said GNWCA president Charlie Jordan. “Our first six shows brought many of our audience along with us, as well as many new people who tell us that they enjoy the Country Club’s relaxed environment.” The first four shows to continue the series into 2017 get underway on Saturday, January 21, when the GNWCA hosts the dynamic Montreal-based group The Bombadils. Maritimer Luke Fraser and prairie-girl Sarah Frank share a love of folk songs and fiddle tunes. Drawing from the Canadian, American and Celtic traditions, the two pour the spirit of storytelling and kitchen parties into their own writing. They will be joined by Nashville-based cellist Kaitlyn Raitz. “Our GNWCA audience will remember cellist Kaitlyn Raitz,” Jordan said. “She appeared with the group Ozere, which the GNWCA brought to town in 2015.” Then on Friday, January 27, the GNWCA breaks some new ground by hosting its very first rock-and-roll dance party with regional favorites Rock On. This band is the biggest draw at the annual Island Pond summer concert series and will be bringing with them the music so many grew up with in the ’1960, ’70s and ’80s.

THE END OF A CHAPTER!

“When [owner] Clay Hinds told us that he had purchased a new portable dance floor for the Country Club, we could hardly wait to book a band to break it in with,” Mr. Jordan said. “Many people recall when the Country Club hosted numerous rock bands in the day, and we will be harkening back to those glory days of local dance when we bring Jules Rancourt’s quartet to the Country Club next month.” The GNWCA and Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital team up for the next show on Friday, February 24 to host Paul Amey and the popular bluegrass group The Parker Hill Road Band. All ticket proceeds on this night will be donated to UCVH’s Capital Campaign to assist the ongoing construction project that will expand UCVH’s rehab section, emergency room and special services. Finally, the GNWCA brings back to the Colebrook Country Club its traditional St. Patrick’s Day Celtic bash with the return of the regional ensemble Islay Mist Ceilidh. They will play a host of songs from the Celtic countries, with an emphasis on the Emerald Isle, when the group performs on Friday, March 17. The GNWCA at the Country Club Concert Series shows all get underway at 7 p.m. on show nights. Tickets for all these shows will be available at Fiddleheads, 110 Main Street in Colebrook, or at the door. General admission prices for the night are $15 for adults, $12 for students, and $5 for children under 12 accompanied by an adult. More information on these and other GNWCA shows can be found on Facebook, by visiting www.gnwca.org, or at 603-237-9302 or 246-8998. The Colebrook Country Club is on-line at www.colebrookcountryclub.com, and may be reached at 237-5566.
