The North Jersey Orchid Society NEWSLETTER — MAY 2016 The Official Publication of the North Jersey Orchid Society

Please take Note: The Hanover Manor will be very busy on May 12th, every room is being used, so we will have to be in the lovely Downstairs room. Please keep this in mind if you are bringing heavy plants for the Plant Table or if you have difficulty with the stairs. Also, come early to get a parking space.

AT OUR NEXT MEETING ON THURSDAY, MAY 12TH

Stig Dalström Will tell us about his expedition to the western section of Bhutan which turned out to be “more adventurous” than ever expected. Stig Dalström has degrees in civil engineering and horticulture, is a self-taught watercolor artist, botanical illustrator and experienced orchid taxonomist. Born and raised in Sweden, he now resides in Sarasota, Florida, USA. He is the former Curator of the Orchid Identification Center of the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, specializing in alpha taxonomy of the Oncidiinae (Orchidaceae), particularly the Andean genera Cyrtochilum, Odontoglossum and Oncidium. During the last decade he has also focused on studying the orchid flora of the Himalayas in general and of Bhutan in particular, where he assists the government in developing orchid research and conservation programs. He is a Research Associate of the National Biodiversity Centre in Serbithang, Thimphu, Bhutan, and of Lankester Botanical Garden, University of Costa Rica. Dalström is an avid author, traveler and lecturer and has given presentations at World Orchid Conferences, international congresses, and shows in Europe, South and Central America and the United States. He frequently lectures for local American Orchid Societies throughout the country. His fine art can be seen in public and private collections in Europe, South America, Asia and the United States. Stig has designed logos, cards, prints and posters for various organizations and institutions. Major contributions are the life-size orchid illustrations in Thesaurus Dracularum, and A Treasure of Masdevallia, authored by Carlyle Luer of Sarasota, and published by At the time of this writing we still need someone to Missouri Botanical generously offer to have Stig Dalstrӧm as their house Garden, St. Louis, guest on Thursday night and take him to the airport on Friday morning. Please get in touch with Bill Stender if Missouri. you can offer your hospitality. Thank you

President’s Message Some Changes Effective July 2016 Change can be difficult, but we hope these changes will improve/encourage participation, recognize/award members for volunteering and participating, and make our meetings more efficient. 1. New “Member Recognition Program” The Board has voted to replace the Grower of The Year Awards with a new “Member Recognition Program” that takes effect in July. Traditionally, NJOS awarded members who received the most votes in each Plant Table class during the previous year (known as the “Grower of The Year Award”). The Grower of the Year award, typically $50 per class, was an incentive to bring plants to the meeting. There are problems with the current voting system. Poor voter participation at the Plant Table has been a long standing problem. The Board instituted a voter incentive by having voters print their name on the back of their ballot which would then be used to call names for door prizes. Voter participation increased tremendously after this change, but it has lapsed again in recent months. There are problems with the current award system. The most frequent complaint was the same people win every year, certain plants never win because the voting system is biased towards big showy flowers, it doesn’t take into account rarity or difficulty in culture, and a few members take this competition to the extreme. Overall, it discourages some members from bringing in their plants. We routinely encounter difficulty in finding volunteers to help at our own show and at shows where we have a display. We constantly beg for plants and for help. It is almost always the same small group of people who help. The current award system does not incentivize participation, volunteerism, or loaning plants for the display.

Table, and shows. The goal is to encourage members to volunteer and participate at our shows, meetings, and events in addition to being good growers. Enclosed in the newsletter on Page 3 is a summary of the Member Recognition Program. It will take effect in July. Note, the money saved from not having the Grower of the Year Awards ($250-$300) will go towards paying for programs and speakers. Please take a moment to read it and become familiar with the point system. Please direct questions to Anita Gibaldi or Carrie Buchman. 2. Show Table With the new program, comes other changes: The current Show Table classes—Greenhouse, Windowsill, Lights, Miniature, Novice, etc. have been eliminated. Show Table plants will now be categorized according to the following alliances: Cattleya, Cymbidium, Dendrobium, Cypripedium, Oncidium, Phalaenopsis, Sarcanthinae, and Other (regardless of where they are grown). Guides will be available to help you determine the alliance of your orchid. This facilitates discussion since all allied genera will be in the same section. One downside--where you had only one, maybe two sheets to register your plants before, now you have more depending on your plants. No more voting (more time eating or socializing)! No more tallying ballots (Russ can enjoy the talk)! At the Plant Table review, we want to encourage member participation and rather than talk about every single plant on the table, we’ll ask random members to select 2 to 4 plants from each alliance represented for discussion. You can choose the plants on any criteria you want! For once, this is about you. What do you want to hear about or learn more about?

This new program rewards members who actively participate in society activities, including the Plant Page 2

New Rewards Program! Starting in July 2016, we’re switching things up! Traditionally, NJOS awarded members who received the most votes in the show table categories in the previous year. We’re implementing a new recognition program that rewards members who participate in society activities, including the show table, and shows. So there are lots of ways to earn “points.” Here’s how it will work. Each member earns points during our fiscal year which is July – June according to the following schedule. Your responsibility is to clearly print your name on the participation sheet in order to receive your points (except for plants in exhibits and ribbon related points which are taken from the show registration and ribbon reports).

1/plant; 5 pts max. 1/ribbon; 5 pts max. 5/day

The top volunteer of the year will be recognized at the July meeting following the end of our fiscal year, and will have first pick of plants at the Holiday Party the following December. All volunteers will receive $10 NJOS coupons for each 25 points they accumulate. The coupons will be issued July 1 and expire after 1 year 2 and can be use for the purchase of raffle tickets and toward buying auction plants.

❶ Since there are no more Grower of the Year awards, we won’t vote on the Show Table; and to shake it up some more, we’re going to organize the show table by alliance: Cattleya, Cymbidium, Dendrobium, Cypripedium, Oncidium, Phalaenopsis, Sarcanthinae, and Other. At the show table review, we’ll ask random members to select 2 to 4 plants from each alliance represented for discussion. You can choose the plants on any criteria you want! Perhaps you see something that you really want to grow, or perhaps you tried it and failed; or maybe you’re just in love with it! Though we won’t be voting on the Show table, we will still be awarding a door prize. Every member at a meeting receives a door prize ticket, and when you bring one or more plants for the Show Table, you get a second door prize ticket. These changes take effect at our July 2016 meeting. Please bring any concerns or issues to the May meeting 3 or email/call Carrie Buchman.

In March we received an email from a woman in Michigan asking if we were interested in taking orchids from a friend in Piscataway who had passed away unexpectedly a week ago. She had many exotic and unusual orchids in her collection and it would be a shame to throw them away. In early March I went to take a look at the collection. They belonged to Sally Meiners. The majority of the orchids were desiccated and in sad shape. Judging by the orchids in her collection, I could tell Sally was no ordinary grower and that she was not afraid of challenges, as some are not easy to grow. She grew a variety of extraordinary orchids including masdevallia, maxillaria, tolumnia, cochlioda, isabelia, dendrobium, oncidium, epidendrum, paphiopedium, gomesa, scaphyglottis, and deciduous phalaenopsis. Three of Sally’s plants were placed in last month’s silent auction. As the plants recover and flourish, they will be placed in the raffles and/or auctions. We thank Sally’s sister, Katherine Meiners, for her generous donation and for saving these treasured babies. Below is Sally’s biography. Sally Meiners was born in Mesa, Arizona and grew up in East Lansing, MI. She was a professor in the UMDNJ Department of Pharmacology before becoming an Independent Life Sciences and Biomedical Writer/Editor in 2010. Her passion for plants began early under the guidance of her parents, Roger and Lynn Meiners, who always had extensive flower and vegetable gardens at home. When she moved to New Jersey in 1991, she became more and more interested in flowers, growing many indoors and also outside in her small townhouse yard. During the past 20 years her indoor plants were almost entirely orchids, and at one point she had over 200, many of them unusual and exotic. She loved to share photos of her babies” with friends and family, keeping thick photo albums of the different species and, in the age of social media, posting pictures of the new blooms on her Facebook page.

Please have them on the table before 7 P.M. so members have time to vote. We have six categories: Greenhouse, Lights, Windowsill, Miniature, Novice and Fragrance. Earn points for the 2015-2016 Plant Table Awards. BRING YOUR BLOOMING PLANTS FOR THE SHOW TABLE AND REMEMBER TO

VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITES!!! Your voting ballot will become your raffle ticket—just put your name on the back! PLEASE VOTE FOR ALL CATEGORIES

Members are encouraged to bring in their plants for diagnosis by our expert growers. If you have a plant that is not doing well and you don’t know why, please bring it to one our meetings. It will be an educational opportunity for all of us. Or, if you have something unusual about your plant and would like to show it, bring it in! We’d love to see it.

and choose one of your “FIRSTS” AS BEST-IN-SHOW (Don’t forget the Fragrance Category)

Got Extras? Do you have duplicates in your collection? Maybe you divided that amazing orchid or just want to downsize your collection. Donating to the NJOS semi-annual auctions is always a great way to find new homes for your ‘chids. But now you don’t need to occupy valuable growing space waiting for the next auction; you can donate orchids to raffles and silent auctions and get a $10 coupon good for raffle tickets, auctions, or silent auctions anytime in the next calendar year. Plants in bud or bloom are particularly appreciated and generate a lot of interest; even a photo of the flower can make for orchid “lust.” Raffles and auctions help NJOS provide top quality speakers and programs. So help us keep the good times coming! Raffles and/or silent auctions are planned for each monthly meeting with the exception of the auctions, potting party, and Holiday Party. Beginning at our DECEMBER meeting, we will have up to 5 donated orchids for the raffle, and each donor receives a $10 coupon for each plant they donate! Orchids in bud/ bloom may go to silent auction at the discretion of the receiving Board Member. Donors are encouraged to let Carrie Buchman know in advance if they are donating orchids for a raffle and, by doing so, “reserve” their space; “walk-ins” are also welcome on a first-come basis. Just because it must be said: Donations may be refused by the receiving Board Member for any reason including but not limited to: missing label (genus and species/grex), bugs, poor plant health, excessive donations, etc. This offer does not apply to vendor donations.
