The Newsletter of the Georgia Tech Founders’ Council FIFTIETH REUNION GIFTS CHANGE LIVES

n 1984, Founders’ Council was established to recognize alumni and friends who have made provisions for the future financial strength of Georgia Tech. Members of this recognition society have made documented non-contingent estate plans or life income arrangements of at least $25,000 for the academic or athletic programs of the Institute. Qualifying gifts include charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities, pooled income funds, bequests, gifts of retirement plan assets, and life insurance.

Jerry S. Johnson, EE 1957, came to Tech from Augusta, Georgia, and, like many students away from home for the first time, enjoyed his newfound freedom. After one year studying architecture, he went home and got a summer job with Georgia Power Company. He liked the job so much that he decided to switch his major to electrical engineering. He also decided that he wanted to pay for his own education and enrolled in the co-op program. When it was time for him to go his last four quarters without work breaks, he asked his Jerry Johnson, EE 1957, father for help with the expenses. has established a scholarship fund His father thought Johnson was having too much fun at his fraterfor co-op students. nity, Phi Kappa Sigma, and said that he would help pay for his education but he would not finance his son’s social life. With youthful defiance and determination, Johnson insisted that he didn’t need his father’s help…and found a tuition bill standing between him and his Georgia Tech degree. Through connections at his Georgia Power co-op job, he was given a loan by the Augusta Rotary Club. Backed by that loan, Johnson was able to focus on his studies while still enjoying fraternity life, and “got out” with a degree in electrical engineering. Fast forward fifty years …. Jerry Johnson now lives in Alamogordo, New Mexico, and will return to campus in October to join his Class of 1957 classmates for their fiftieth reunion. Celebrating with parties and the Homecoming football game, the weekend will be a time of rekindling old friendships and swapping tales of younger days…and the class will present a check to Georgia Tech for its collective fiftieth reunion class gift. After fifty years, many alumni have a good perspective on the impact of their Georgia Tech degree— on their lives, careers, and fortunes. “Remembering that situation my senior year, I want to help students with financial need,” Johnson explained. “Endowing a scholarship for co-op students seems the right thing to do. Charitable gift annuities fit nicely in my own financial situation, and I have designated them to be added to the scholarship fund after my death. Also, I have made a bequest provision for the scholarship fund under my will.”

Kenneth W. Faulkner, IM 1950, also wanted to make a difference at Tech. In 2000, to honor his fiftieth reunion, Faulkner named the Georgia Tech Foundation a beneficiary of his retirement plan account. Showing his ever-keen sense of humor, he designated his commitment for scholarships for “HOPE-less” students. The HOPE scholarship is awarded to Georgia students who maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. Faulkner knew that a 3.0 is easier said than done at Georgia Tech. By graduation, 70 percent of eligible students have lost HOPE somewhere The late Ken Faulkner, IM 1950, along the way. Ken Faulkner died in 2005, and established a scholarship fund for this year eight students are the students who have lost “HOPE.” initial recipients of the Kenneth W. and Mary C. Faulkner Scholarships. Recently, at a luncheon honoring these students, his wife Mary Faulkner commented, “Ken would be so impressed with these bright young people and happy for his part in helping them with their Georgia Tech education.” Many alumni choose to make a planned gift as part of their fiftieth reunion commitment to Tech, and these estate provisions and lifeincome arrangements not only represent a substantial portion of fiftieth reunion class gifts, but also make a significant difference in Tech’s future. Pam Trube, director of the Reunion Giving Program at Tech, commented, “Jerry Johnson and Ken Faulkner are like many alumni who want to give back to Georgia Tech through a fiftieth reunion gift. As part of the gift planning process, each could quantify the advantages of his gift in personal finances and with tax savings. What cannot be measured, however, is the life-changing impact that these fiftieth reunion gifts will have on future generations of students at Tech.”

n October 28, 2006, members of the Class of 1956 made a collective gift in honor of their fiftieth reunion. Of the $5.8 million raised, $1.33 million came from planned gifts: bequests, retirement plan beneficiary designations, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, and life insurance. Class of 1956 Founders’ Council members listed below made planned gifts of at least $25,000 as part of their fiftieth reunion gift.

SMART ESTATE PLANNING WITH YOUR RETIREMENT ACCOUNT ost people don’t know that, at death, retirement plan assets can be taxed twice. Any distribution to a non-charitable beneficiary is taxed as ordinary income (of up to 35 percent) at the beneficiary’s income tax rate. When the surviving beneficiary of your plan is not your spouse, retirement plan assets can also be taxed if your estate is taxable (up to 45 percent). Naming the Georgia Tech Foundation or Alexander-Tharp Fund as beneficiary of your retirement plan account after your death is an effective tax-saving strategy for creating a legacy at Georgia Tech. Discuss some of the following tax-wise charitable planning tips with your advisors: • Name your spouse as the primary beneficiary of your retirement plan with the Georgia Tech Foundation as secondary beneficiary of the plan’s remaining assets after your spouse’s death. • Under your will, establish a charitable remainder trust to provide lifetime income for your spouse. After your death, the retirement plan assets will fund the trust. When your spouse dies, the trust remainder will create a legacy in your name at Georgia Tech. • Give children appreciated assets instead of retirement plan assets. Under current law, they could get a stepped-up basis and won’t pay income tax on the distributions. • Name the Georgia Tech Foundation as beneficiary of your account for a specific amount, for a percentage of the residual, or for the greater of a percentage of the residual and a specific amount. Make a provision in your will for a bequest for Tech that would be in effect only if the retirement plan assets have been depleted.

INCLUDE GEORGIA TECH IN YOUR ESTATE PLANS onors are encouraged to designate their estate gifts for the Georgia Tech Foundation or for the Alexander-Tharpe Fund (to support the Institute’s intercollegiate athletic programs). Both are 501(c)(3) organizations that receive and manage private contributions for the benefit of Georgia Tech and have more flexibility in investments and distribution of funds than does the Institute. If you would like to make a bequest for Georgia Tech, include the following language in your estate plans:

D

I give and bequeath ______% of the residue and remainder of my estate (or the sum of _________ dollars, $______________) to the Georgia Tech Foundation Inc., a Georgia charitable corporation, for unrestricted support of the Georgia Institute of Technology. You can designate your bequest for a named endowment to support your school or college, or to support a specific purpose like scholarships or graduate fellowships. Please contact our gift planning office at 404.894.4678 for details. Our gift planning professionals are available to consult with you and your advisors about charitable gifts and how they can best be used by Georgia Tech.

PRIME EARNING YEARS … SEEKING RETIREMENT INCOME? eferred payment charitable gift annuities help meet the challenge of finding a steady and guaranteed source of income in retirement. With a deferred payment charitable gift annuity, you make a gift now while you are in your top earning years, and you receive an immediate income tax charitable deduction. The payments are deferred to any time you choose after you have turned 65. The longer the deferral period, the higher the rate will be and the larger the charitable deduction. Once the payments start, you will receive guaranteed fixed income for the rest of your life. After your death, the residual of your gift will establish an endowment in your name, your legacy for Georgia Tech’s future. The minimum age for an annuitant is 50, and the minimum gift is $25,000. Payments cannot begin before age 65. Annuities can be funded with cash or publicly traded securities. If your spouse is a secondary annuitant, the annuity rate will be lower.

IN THE FOUNDERS’ FOOTSTEPS lanned gifts have been important to Georgia Tech since its earliest days and they continue to play a vital role in helping Tech attract and retain outstanding students and faculty, in strengthening academic and athletic programs, and in improving campus facilities. Bequests and other planned gifts are one of the greatest sources of funding for Georgia Tech. These gifts stabilize the Institute’s financial foundation and help secure its future. With each new generation of alumni, the tradition of building endowment further strengthens Georgia Tech and perpetuates a legacy of giving back to the Institute. If you have made an estate or trust provision for Tech, please let us know. While unexpected gifts are a wonderful and thoughtful surprise, we would very much like to be able to honor your commitment and thank you in person today. If you are interested, we can introduce you to current students and help you to reconnect with faculty and ongoing campus research. Those who create bequests for Georgia Tech are wonderful role models, and every Founders’ Council member provides an example to other Georgia Tech supporters. Current students learn from this example and are inspired to continue the tradition for future generations. If Georgia Tech is aware of your estate gift, our gift planning professionals can work with you and your advisors to ensure that your interests and intentions are clearly understood and followed. Georgia Tech thanks members of Founders’ Council for their generosity in establishing these critically important provisions for Georgia Tech’s future.

CENTENARIAN TOM EDWARDS, EE 1928, HAS GIFT ANNUITIES BY THE DOZEN ast June, after returning from a cruise to the Amazon with his wife Evelyn, Thomas A. Edwards, EE 1928, celebrated his 100th birthday and marked nearly three decades of making planned gifts to Georgia Tech. What makes Edwards’ support unique among Tech alumni is his creation of twelve charitable gift annuities since 1998, all for the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, where his gifts will one day establish the Thomas A. Edwards Endowment Fund. “Charitable gift annuities have In 2006, Thomas A. For example, a onelife gift annuity funded with $50,000 cash, with an annuitant age 80, will provide an annuity of approximately $4,000, with more than half of the income tax free. The gift generates a charitable income tax deduction of more than $25,500. Tom Edwards came to Georgia Tech from Florence, Alabama. He built a distinguished four-decade career with General Electric, retiring in 1968 as GE’s manager of utilities in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. A licensed engineer in seven states, Edwards was actively involved in civic affairs during his time in Massachusetts, serving for many years as chairman and moderator of the Board of Selectmen in Richmond, Massachusetts. He also served as a trustee of Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. The Edwardses live in Lake Worth, Florida. A charter member of Founders’ Council, Edwards was inducted into the College of Engineering Hall of Fame in 1995.
