THE NEW SANCHEZ BOOK by George A. Sanchez There is a new Sanchez Family book out entitled "Nuestros Antepasados" (Our Ancestors): Los Nuevo Mexicanos del Condado de Lincoln (Lincoln County's History of its New Mexico Settlers) by Ernest S. Sanchez (Author) and Paul R. Sanchez (Contributor). This Ernest Sanchez from Glencoe, New Mexico, is my third cousin, not to be confused with another Ernest Sanchez from Las Cruces, New Mexico, who is also a third cousin of mine. The three of us descend from different brothers who are the sons of Mauricio Sanchez, the first appointed Sheriff of Lincoln County, New Mexico, in the 1870s. (You can find this story in the San Elizario Genealogy and Historical Society's web site: www.sanelizariogenealogy.com in an article entitled "Sanchez Ancestral Connections to Billy the Kid.") The Glencoe Ernest Sanchez is also a retired Sheriff of Lincoln County, the Las Cruces Ernest Sanchez is a retired Mathematician from White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, and I am a retired Math Teacher living in El Paso, Texas. The three of us started doing our Sanchez family genealogy many years ago. The Las Cruces Ernest also did much of his mother's Otero genealogy. He was the one whodiscovered and proved that this Otero line descends from a Catholic Priest. This was given in an article in the Hispanic Genealogical Research Center of New Mexico (HGRC) Journal Herencia several years ago. Jose Antonio Esquibel discovered that our own Sanchez line also descends from another Catholic Priest after many of us Sanchez genealogists could not find a father for Jacinto, Pedro, and Francisca Sanchez de Inigo! With the help of many HGRC genealogists, I also did much of my mother's Gurule (Grolet) genealogy which can be found in Angela Lewis's gurulefamily.org web site . Both the Las Cruces Ernest and I contributed many articles to the various genealogical organizations that we belong to, especially the HGRC Journal Herencia, where all of this information can be found. I have known for quite a number of years that the Ernest Sanchez from Glencoe was writing a Sanchez family history book and finally it is done! I ordered the book from Amazon for $29.95. and there you can also read pages from the book. You can also order the "Kindle" version for $3.99. In my opinion the book is outstanding! I have always known that Ernest Sanchez was including many of his uncle's and cousin's genealogies as opposed to my genealogical writing about my immediate paternal and maternal lines. But not only did he do this but he also gave the genealogies of many if not all of the settlers that started Lincoln County. Families whose sur names are Gonzales, Herrera, Analla, Baca, Baragan, Benasvidez, Candelaria, Chavez, and many more, including my great-grandparents Andalesio Padilla and Paublita Marino.

Ernest tells us how these families interacted with the famous people of the Lincoln County War and how these Spanish speakers were associated with the McSween Regulators that included Billy the Kid, Josiah "Doc" Scurlock, and Charles Bowdre, and were not associated with Dolan and his henchmen group. I'm going to give you the genealogy that I discovered and wrote about in my family history books of my great-grandparents Andalesio Padilla and Paublita Marino. Andalesio Padilla came from Los Padillas in northern New Mexico and became a sheep rancher in what is now Three Rivers, New Mexico. Three Rivers is about fifteen miles north of Tularosa, New Mexico. If you turn north towards Sierra Blanca at the Gift Store, go about ten miles past the Petro Glyphs, you will come to an old Chapel that the folks from Tularosa maintain. In the cemetery next to that old Chapel is buried my Great-Grandfather Andalesio Padilla, his grave has an iron cross with his name. In front of him is buried his father Juan Padilla and next to Juan is Andalesio's mother Rosalia Chavez. I do not know at this time where Andalecio's wife Paublita Marino is buried. Here is a picture of my great-grandparents Andalesio Padilla and Paublita Marino and a picture of my wife Kila and the Christmas wreaths she made for them this year:

When I did my Great-Grandfather Andalesio's paternal genealogy I found his father Juan Padilla and his Grandfather Pablo Padilla. Pablo Padilla's mother was named Juana Padilla and her parents were Esteban Padilla and Jacinta Martin. I could not find a husband for Juana Padilla. (I did not know then about Catholic priests fathering Nuevo Mexicano children so I didn't look into that!) What I did find in the book "When Jesus Came, The Corn Mother Went Away" was a Juana Padilla who brought religious charges of fathering her child against a fellow named Rodriguez. He claimed that this woman had children by many different men so how could he know if her latest child was his? He was not required to marry her but did have to give her several animals and some sacks of corn and chiles! What can be found in the Ernest Sanchez book is my (our) complete Jacinto Sanchez de Inigo genealogy on page 467. Here is a shorter version that I submitted to Miguel Torrez of the New Mexico Genealogical Society to complete my Y-DNA:

Haplogroup Q-M242 (Native American) George A. Sanchez S/O Abran Sanchez (b. 1905) and Ramoncita Gurule (b. 1916) S/O Felipe Sanchez (b. 1874) and Candelaria Padilla (b. 1879) S/O Estolano Sanchez (b. 1847) and Cornelia Pachec0 (b. 1857) S/O Mauricio Sanchez (b 1820) and Jesusita Gonzales (b. 1826) S/O Gregorio Sanchez (b. 1777) and Maria Rita Baca S/O Juan Cristobal Sanchez (b.1726) and Juana Maria Tomasa Duran y Chavez (b.1737) S/O Francisco Sanchez de Inigo and Josefa Duran y Chavez (b.1708) S/O Jacinto Sanchez de Inigo (b. 1634) and Mari de Rodarte de Castro Zabalera (b. 1678) S/O Fray Francisco Munoz (b.1629) and Juana Lopez de Aragon S/O Jacinto Munoz (b.1610) and Magdalena Sanchez de Inigo S/O Francisco Munoz(b.1585) and Leonor Ortiz

My Great-Grandparents Andalesio Padilla's and Paublita Marino had fourteen children, a few are buried in the Three Rivers Chapel cemetery (See page 491 of the Sanchez Book.). The oldest is my Grandmother Candelaria Padilla who married my Grandfather Felipe Sanchez. (See page 500 of the Sanchez Book.) Here are three wonderful pictures that I posted on the El Paso Museum of History Digital Wall:

As you can see from the Paternal Line of my Grandfather Felipe Sanchez he descends from Jacinto Sanchez de Inigo and beyond. The amazing new, for me, genealogy that I found in the Ernest Sanchez's book is that my Great-Grandfather Andalesio Padilla's maternal ancestry also goes back to Jacinto Sanchez de Inigo and beyond! Here is that line (The page numbers are from the Sanchez book where the genealogy is given in more detail.) Andalesio Padilla (Page 491) S/O Rosalia Chavez (Page 482) and Juan Padilla D/O Juana Sanchez (Page 478) and Agustin Chavez D/O Pedro Sanchez (Page 475) and Maria de Luz Baca S/O Jacinto Sanchez (Page 471) and Efigenia Duran y Chavez S/O Jose Sanchez de Inigo (Page 469) and Teresa Jaramillo S/O Jacinto Sanchez de Inigo (Page 467) and Isabel Jiron S/O Fray Francisco Munoz (Page 467)) and Juana Lopez de Aragon S/O Jacinto Munoz (Page 467)) and Magdalena Sanchez de Inigo S/O Francisco Munoz(Page 467) and Leonor Ortiz The genealogies in this outstanding Ernest Sanchez book has many other connections. For example, in the third line of Andalesio's maternal line above, Pedro Sanchez's mother is Efigenia Duran y Chavez whose father is Pedro Chavez and mother is Juana Hinojos. These Duran y Chavez's are all over our Sanchez ancestry and we could use the genealogies given in the Ernest Sanchez book to make many other connections similar to the one I discovered about my GreatGrandfather Andalesio Padilla.
