What can you expect of a Mercedes-Benz? More. There are buses. And Mercedes-Benz buses. In today’s tough competition, the Star makes the difference. It gives you a decisive edge – and the good feeling of having done your best for the future of your company.

In the vanguard of progress. Like no other manufacturer in the world, Mercedes-Benz has taken on responsibility for the bus. Not only because in 1895 Carl Benz built the first bus in the world, but also because Mercedes-Benz has developed it since that time into a high performance, safe and environmentally friendly form of transport. That is why today at Mercedes-Benz Buses and Coaches you find practical, advanced solutions for the challenges of tomorrow – so that you can be that vital step ahead of your competitors in the future too. Responsibility is a commitment.

Citaro Highlights. With over 35,000 vehicles in Europe and major cities throughout the world, the Citaro has an impact on local public transport like no other regular service bus. And for a good reason: for more than a decade, the Citaro has been setting standards in design, comfort, safety and cost-effectiveness. Equipped with futureoriented Euro VI technology, the new Citaro continues this tradition.

Top class technology for a new era. For a long time now, Mercedes-Benz has been taking a lead role in the development of environment friendly, innovative drive technologies. With the efficient, high performance BlueTec® engines, we have succeeded in keeping fuel consumption constant and significantly reducing harmful emissions. With the new BlueEfficiency Power technology, Mercedes-Benz is once again setting new standards. For it already satisfies the new emission standard two years before implementation of Euro VI becomes mandatory by law. In the new Citaro the Euro VI engine of tomorrow is already available today.

Simply unmistakable. Yet again. With its eye-catching design, the Citaro has always been a trendsetter in local public transport. Now it has an even more modern look. From the friendly face, through the low sweep of the window line and the characteristic design elements to the colour display. And as regards comfort, the new Citaro has continued to build on its strengths. Added to the continuous low-floor and spacious interior, there are now more comfortable entrances and exits, more ergonomic passenger seats and a completely redesigned driver’s workstation. For even more safety and excellent comfort. All this makes the new Citaro an advertisement for your company.

5

Be the first – with Euro VI technology. Only those who think of solutions for tomorrow today can keep a step ahead of the competition. With the new generation of BlueEfficiency Power engines, Mercedes-Benz is continuing the tradition as a pioneer of technology.

The first public service bus with Euro VI. Specifically developed for Europe, and tested and proven under the toughest conditions from the Arctic Circle to Southern Europe, the new BlueEfficiency Power drive technology is now being used for the first time in the new Citaro. As the first engines in their class, the OM 934 h and OM 470 rated at 220 to 265 kW already meet the new Euro VI exhaust emission standard two years before it comes into force. This powerful, efficient, future-oriented engine ensures a drastic reduction of nitrogen oxides and particles in the exhaust gas. It makes the new Citaro the leader of a new generation of environment friendly public service buses.

6

A milestone in engine development. The new BlueEfficiency Power engines with BlueTec® 6 are convincing not only because of their high environmental compatibility, but also because of their high economy. For, in spite of the higher requirements, we have succeeded in keeping the fuel consumption low as usual. No additional fuel consumption in spite of Euro VI – a new milestone set by Mercedes-Benz. This success is due partly to the common rail technology. Another top class feature beside the low emissions due to the combination of SCR technology, on-demand exhaust gas recirculation and particulate filter, is the high dynamic response of the engines thanks to the new turbocharger technology. For maximum output, very quiet running and comfortable driving characteristics. And with extremely long maintenance intervals of up to 60,000 km, which keeps the life-cycle costs low.

8

Appealing at first sight. The bus is the face of your fleet. Fine when it looks so friendly and inviting as the new Citaro – and at the same time radiates such confidence and safeness.

Where appearance also matches the reputation. Mercedes-Benz buses influence the image of many international cities. With the new Citaro it will be a bit more pronounced. For example, we have added emphasis to its strong styling with many new design details, such as the striking front panel, the contoured wheel arches and the embossed Citaro wordmark at the rear. Also eye-catching are the larger side windows with the modern curved lower edge. They attract attention from everybody on the street. For a change of colour there is the new destination display, where you now have a choice between green, red and blue.

End of the line for boring design. Clear lines and a lot of attention to detail also define the interior of the new Citaro. As soon as you board you feel comfortable. The brighter illumination of the boarding area and the friendly design of the passenger compartment contribute to this. Moreover, additional equipment variants give you more freedom in the design of the compartment. Whether single seat, double seat or mother-and-child seat – you decide how you want to divide up the interior. Exactly to your requirements – and those of your passengers.

9

Here I am a person, here I’ll get on. It is always a good feeling to sit in a Mercedes-Benz – or even sometimes to stand. For we place importance not only on an attractive exterior: the interior qualities must also be right.

Passenger dream. Low steps, a reduced boarding height off the ground and a continuous low floor ensure easy boarding and alighting as well as a fast passenger flow. The generous interior conveys a feeling of airy spaciousness. The panoramic windows contribute to this with the dynamic sweep of the window line. The standing height is comfortable in all parts of the vehicle – even for tall people. Thanks to the new electrical cassette ramp, wheelchair users and people with restricted mobility can board more easily. Equipment for disabled people in accordance with the EU Directive is of course also available for the new Citaro.

12

In the new Citaro you won’t break into a sweat. The climate in the new Citaro is very pleasant – and at any time of the year. Thermostatically controlled sidewall heaters ensure comfortable temperatures in winter. The perforated ceiling supports the automatic supply and exhaust of air in the passenger compartment. And thanks to the powerful air conditioning system with integrated roof heater, you can enhance the comfort for your passengers still further. Make it comfortable for your passengers. The seats of the new Citaro are extremely robust and hardwearing – and yet also very comfortable. This is because the seat shells have ergonomically formed upholstery for optimal comfort. Here you can sit really well. And if your passengers do have to stand, they will find the perfect handhold in our new flexible handrail system – from front to rear.

13

16

Touring comfort for the city. It is really something special to ride in the new Citaro. Its excellent chassis ensures top class ride comfort on every route.

A chassis that is something of a masterpiece of engineering. With independent suspension on the front axle, the Citaro sets new standards in public transport. Straight-line stability and outstanding steerability in conjunction with a comfortable suspension ensure smooth and comfortable driving characteristics similar to that of a coach. There’s something coming round the corner. The new Citaro is once again one of the most agile vehicles in its class. In the case of the 12-m rigid bus, the turning circle is just 21.21 m despite the longer wheelbase and greater overhang. For you this means extreme manoeuvrability and maximum driving safety, even in difficult situations.

Top marks for attitude. In relation to roadholding the new Citaro is setting standards. Regardless of the number of passengers or the state of the road, this comfortable public service bus is perfectly sprung in every situation. This is provided for by the optionally available roll-pitch control system with electronically controlled shock absorbers. It automatically stabilises the vehicle, thereby improving the roadholding and comfort for your passengers.

17

Be safe, drive Mercedes-Benz. The bus is seen as one of the safest forms of transport in the world. The innovations of Mercedes-Benz have played a decisive part in this. Convince yourself of the benefits of our integral safety concept.

When it comes to safety we have always been the first. Since the invention of the bus by Carl Benz, Mercedes-Benz has continually performed pioneering work in advanced development of bus safety. Many of the innovations that are standard today were launched in a vehicle with the Star. At the same time, Mercedes-Benz pursues the vision of accident-free driving. The integral safety concept of Mercedes-Benz is an essential contribution in its realisation. To thoroughly implement this safety thinking, the concept covers all phases of automotive safety: from driving safety, through safety in dangerous situations and protection in the event of an accident, to minimising the consequences of accidents. Just to make sure.

18

Fundamentally stable and safe. In the new Citaro your passengers have excellent all-round protection against accidents. For the body skeleton made of electro-welded, durable square tubes cannot be damaged so easily. Further improvement of the body framework in the new Citaro with encircling ribs and diagonal bracing gives a high body skeleton strength in accordance with the ECE R 66.01 standard. The front end is reinforced in accordance with the ECE R 29 standard for a particularly effective collision guard. New safety standards are also set by the ESP® system and the bi-xenon headlamps, available on request. For safety that was previously only available in coaches.

19

20

Always a good feeling – a safe workplace. The best protection for the passengers is always a driver who is able to concentrate fully on his driving. Therefore the driver’s workstation must be protected from distractions and the controls must be intuitive and within easy reach. Here too the new Citaro sets standards.

Here everything is where it should be. Nothing should distract the Citaro driver from his work. We have been working on exactly this. For a better all-round view, the position of the driver’s seat has been slightly raised – it is now directly at eye level with the passengers. Furthermore, extending the front has allowed for more legroom – even with the improved collision protection. That enables an optimal sitting position on long work days. New driver’s windows make for better ventilation and easy access to the exterior mirror. Here everything is really intuitive. AIt will also be easier to read the instruments and operate the switches in the new Citaro. This is because we have optimised and emphasised the form and layout of both. Also new in the Citaro is the

multifunction steering wheel. The menu navigation of the display is now really easy from the function buttons. It is not only comfortable to sit here – there is also plenty of room. Additional DIN slots provide for flexible expansion options in the new Citaro. We have now also taken the opportunity to make them easier to reach. And for the driver’s personal things there are extra stowages in the bag compartment and on the waist rail. So you see, everything in the new Citaro is well looked after – naturally that includes the driver. This task is taken care of by the new driver’s safety door, which protects the driver from unexpected attacks. Depending on the requirement and desired level of protection, there are four feature levels available.

There is nothing lacking here. Naturally, the new Citaro also has everything on the electronic side to provide your drivers with optimal support in city traffic. Beginning with the tyre pressure monitoring system, this includes the rain and light sensors and does not stop with the Electronic Stability Program ESP® by a long way. But you would not expect anything else from a Mercedes-Benz. Of course not.

21

The important thing is: what is the bottom line for your route? Transport operators also have to price keenly. In this respect it is important to include the total bus life-cycle in the calculation. This is where the Citaro has always held the benchmark – which we have nevertheless set a tick higher with the new Citaro.

A bus only earns money when it moves. To minimise costly downtimes, we have made the new Citaro even more maintenance friendly – and less maintenance prone. To prevent fouling and damage, all electronic cables have been relocated from the floor assembly to the ceiling midline. Better access and higher capacity for the filters in the driver’s air intake make for longer cleaning intervals. The same goes for the modern LED illumination, which is also used in the interior. Important components are easily accessible without tools. And in the event of minor damage, optimised exterior parts ensure that the damage can be rapidly repaired. Everything together makes maintenance intervals longer and repair times shorter. So that you are soon back on the road again.

24

High performance, low fuel consumption. A clear benefit for your local public transport is also represented by the future-oriented Euro VI engines with BlueEfficiency Power drive technology. Their efficient, clean fuel combustion in times of persistently high fuel prices pays for itself every single day. For, in spite of Euro VI, the consumption of fuel remains at the level of Euro V or even lower. And the environment also benefits from the drastically reduced pollutant and particle emissions. furthermore, with powerful rated outputs of 220 to 260 kW (OM 936 h) or 265 kW (OM 470), they are not only frugal, but also zippy on the road.

A genuine ecosystem. The actual efficiency with which a public service bus moves through urban traffic does not depend solely on the economy of the engine. Other components such as air conditioning, the light system or electric doors also affect fuel consumption. The new Citaro also comes up trumps here and, in addition to energy-saving LED lighting, offers other on-board advantages such as a new light air conditioning system, lightweight sliding doors which require little maintenance and an optimised battery management system – perfectly coordinated through intelligent electronics. The new Citaro not only reduces your costs. It also generates new income sources through additional advertising space on the ceiling edge flaps and driver’s partition and optional advertising signs integrated in the handrails.

25

26

Everyone can do something for the environment. For example drive the new Citaro. Bus travel is one of the most environment friendly methods of transport – especially if one boards the new Citaro. For not only is it right out front in reducing harmful emissions: it also begins with protecting the environment right at the start. Clean production. Already during production of the Citaro, we pay attention to the greatest possible environmental compatibility. For example, the cathodic dip priming process (KTL) is largely solvent-free. And when one day the vehicle, after a long and successful bus life, is finally taken out of service, its components will be especially suitable for recycling. On request, the new Citaro is also available with the „Blue Angel“ environmental kite mark. Once again quality has been thought through: typical of Mercedes-Benz.

27

Ultimately it is quality that counts. The predecessor model of the new Citaro was already among the most sold buses in local public transport. Decisive for this success was not only the future-oriented vehicle concept, but also the exceptional quality that is being consistently continued in the new Citaro.

Made by Mercedes-Benz. The new Citaro is manufactured in one of the most modern bus production plants in the world. A host of steps for enhancing and assuring quality ensures that it will still continue to fulfil its purpose problem-free after many years. These include, for example, the cathodic dip priming of the entire body skeleton. This provides the new Citaro with long term anti-corrosion protection – therefore also protecting the value of your investment. Every part of the new Citaro is extensively tested before it goes into production. And after each production step there are strict controls to guarantee that the processing is free of faults. Finally, it is part of the Mercedes-Benz quality philosophy to regularly check and optimise the production processes. So you can count on and make plans with your new Citaro.
