The Need for Practical Hydrographic Education in the USA •

The IHO and Hydro International magazine have reported a severe shortage of hydrographic surveyors world-wide. Hydro International reports that vacancies and demands for personnel at sea have made hydrographic surveyors the most wanted profession in the offshore world. (Hydro International, “Starters in Hydrography” Jan, 2007, vol. 11, no. 1)

In the Gulf Coast region, there are approximately 4000 active offshore platforms. http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/explorations/06mexico/background/oil/oil.html

Unlike other professions in demand, where numerous universities and other training institutions exist to address the needs of industry and society, there are only two institutions with internationally recognized hydrographic programs in the USA: USM and UNH. 2

Commercial Survey companies have indicated a very high interest in a U.S. Undergraduate degree Program because:(perscon with C&C Technologies, Fugro-Chance, and DOF Subsea):

   

Few academic programs in the USA Many new hires have land survey skills only Only source of ready- to- work entry-level employees are foreign (Canadian, UK, etc.) U.S. regulatory agencies are becoming more restrictive in applying the Jones Act which requires U.S. citizenship for working offshore in U.S. waters

While USM and UNH annually graduate a dozen each highly qualified CAT A hydrographers with a Master of Science degree, both programs do not address industry needs for many more hydrographers with a practical hydrographic skill set.

USM’s New Hydro Program Southern Miss is planning to initiate a 4-yr Undergraduate Hydrographic Science degree program due to:    

Aforementioned industry requirements for hydrographers Geographic proximity to offshore platforms Existing expertise with hydrographic academic programs USM Blue Technology Program that directly addresses Mississippi’s need to enhance technology-related jobs in the maritime industry (i.e., the “Blue Economy”).
