Introduction

Introduction

• Many insist that all who become Christians are commanded to be baptized with the Holy Spirit in order to be saved • They also teach that proof of this baptism of the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues • The major error is believing the promises about the Holy Spirit made to the apostles apply to us today • If true, then we too can reveal and confirm 5 the Word of God today

• We are not part of the process but receive the benefits of His work including salvation • In our study we will see what the baptism of the Holy Spirit was, why it was given, to whom it was given and if it is for all Christians for all time • We will also study other promises about what the Holy Spirit would enable the apostles and some other men to do to reveal and confirm the New Testament 6

Mar 13:11 "When they arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour; for it is not you who speak, but it is the Holy Spirit.

Joh 14:16 "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; Joh 14:17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. 9

Joh 14:22 Judas (not Iscariot) *said to Him, "Lord, what then has happened that You are going to disclose Yourself to us and not to the world?" Joh 14:23 Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. 10

Joh 16:15 "All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine 14 and will disclose it to you.

The Baptism Of The Holy Spirit Promised To Jesus’ Apostles

• Later, we will study what the baptism of the Holy Spirit means • But now, we study that the baptism of the Holy Spirit was a promise made to Jesus’ apostles • This point differs from Pentecostals who claim that the baptism of the Holy Spirit is a command for Christians to obey and not a promise

Mat 3:10 "The axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Mat 3:11 "As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Luk 24:44 Now He said to them, "These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled." Luk 24:45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, Luk 24:46 and He said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise 21 again from the dead the third day,

Luk 24:47 and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. Luk 24:48 "You are witnesses of these things. Luk 24:49 "And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed 22 with power from on high."

Act 1:1 The first account I composed, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and teach, Act 1:2 until the day when He was taken up to heaven, after He had by the Holy Spirit given orders to the apostles whom He had chosen.

23

Act 1:3 To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God. Act 1:4 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, "Which," He said, "you heard of from Me; 24

Act 1:7 He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; Act 1:8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth." 25

Act 1:23 So they put forward two men, Joseph called Barsabbas (who was also called Justus), and Matthias. Act 1:24 And they prayed and said, "You, Lord, who know the hearts of all men, show which one of these two You have chosen

The Apostles Baptized With The Holy Spirit To Reveal And Confirm All Truth

• The baptism with or of the Holy Spirit is a figure of speech • On Pentecost, the apostles were immersed in the power of the Holy Spirit to reveal and confirm the gospel • On Pentecost, Joel 2:28-32 was fulfilled when the power and blessings of the Holy Spirit were poured out from Heaven

• The apostles revealed and confirmed the gospel by miracles before the Jews • Although only the apostles were baptized with the Holy Spirit, the people received the Holy Spirit’s gift of salvation when they obeyed the gospel by believing enough to repent and be baptized for forgiveness of sins • We too can receive the gracious gift of salvation today by obeying the gospel 32

Mar 10:38 But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" Mar 10:39 They said to Him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized.

Act 1:26 And they drew lots for them, and the lot fell to Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles. Act 2:1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. Act 2:2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

Act 2:3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. Act 2:5 Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation 35 under heaven.

Act 2:6 And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language. Act 2:7 They were amazed and astonished, saying, "Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? Act 2:8 "And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were 36 born?

Act 2:14 But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: "Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words. Act 2:15 "For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day;

Act 2:16 but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel: Act 2:17 'AND IT SHALL BE IN THE LAST DAYS,' God says, 'THAT I WILL POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT ON ALL MANKIND; AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY, AND YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE VISIONS, AND YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM DREAMS; 38

Act 2:36 "Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ--this Jesus whom you crucified." Act 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?"

Act 8:14 Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, Act 8:15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. Act 8:16 For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Act 8:17 Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Holy Spirit. Act 8:18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was bestowed through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money, Act 8:19 saying, "Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit."

Was Cornelius And His Household Baptized With The Holy Spirit?

• Many point to Cornelius as an example that we must be baptized with the Holy Spirit in order to be saved • But, the miraculous display of the Holy Spirit on Cornelius and household had nothing to do with what they needed to do to be saved • In order to be saved, Cornelius, like all, believed to the point of repenting and 47 being baptized for forgiveness of sins

• The purpose of this supernatural display of the Holy Spirit was to confirm to the apostles and other Jews that God would forgive the Gentiles by the same gospel that had been preached to the Jews • Although Cornelius and household received the power to speak in tongues in the same way as the apostles, they did not receive the full measure of power and abilities as the apostles did 48

Act 10:42 "And He ordered us to preach to the people, and solemnly to testify that this is the One who has been appointed by God as Judge of the living and the dead. Act 10:43 "Of Him all the prophets bear witness that through His name everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins."

Act 10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. Act 10:45 All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.

Act 11:16 "And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' Was Paul Baptized With The Holy Spirit?

Was Paul Baptized With The Holy Spirit?

• There is no evidence that Paul was baptized with the Holy Spirit • He was specially selected by the Lord Jesus Himself who appeared to him • By revelation, he received the gospel from the Holy Spirit and possessed all miraculous powers that the 12 apostles received • His special role was to bring the gospel to 59 the Gentiles

Act 9:17 So Ananias departed and entered the house, and after laying his hands on him said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit." Act 9:18 And immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he regained his sight, and he got up and was baptized; 60

1Co 15:8 and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also. 1Co 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles, and not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

1Co 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me. 1Co 15:11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

2Co 11:5 For I consider myself not in the least inferior to the most eminent apostles. 2Co 12:12 The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with all perseverance, by signs and wonders and miracles. Gal 1:11 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. Gal 1:12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. Gal 1:13 For you have heard of my former manner of life in Judaism, how I used to persecute the church of God beyond 65 measure and tried to destroy it;

Gal 1:14 and I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries among my countrymen, being more extremely zealous for my ancestral traditions. Gal 1:15 But when God, who had set me apart even from my mother's womb and called me through His grace, was pleased

2Ti 1:6 For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 2Ti 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.

• Many wrongly believe and teach that we are a part of the process of revealing and confirming the New Testament by miracles • But, it is clear that we are not a part of the process but are recipients of the benefits of the Holy Spirit’s work through the powerful gospel that is able to save us and change us into His image • The New Testament has been completely 69 revealed and confirmed by miracles

2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 2Ti 3:17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

1Pe 1:10 As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, 1Pe 1:11 seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.

70

1Pe 1:12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven--things into which angels long to look.

The Holy Spirit Inspired Revealed And Confirmed The New Testament 2Pe 1:20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, 2Pe 1:21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

The Holy Spirit Inspired Revealed And Confirmed The New Testament 1Co 2:8 the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory; 1Co 2:9 but just as it is written, "THINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT HEARD, AND which HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN, ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM." 75
