Introduction Welcome to; The Model Show 2015. This is our third year at Poynton Leisure Centre and I start by thanking the Centre’s staff for making our task this weekend a far easier one. This event is assembled from as wide an array, of models and I cannot overstate my gratitude to our exhibitors and stewards, who work hard throughout the year and travel sometimes great distances and give freely of their time, to ensure that our event is one of national standing. TMS as we like to be remembered has in a handful of years, quadrupled in size from the opening event. Even so we annually have to choose; not what to put into the show, but what too leave out! Having such enthusiastic support via our network of individuals and clubs we are truly blessed and if this sort of thing appeals to you, we are always keen to swell ever-greater, the ranks of ‘the friends of the model show’; to include any accomplished adult or ‘adult accompanied’ junior modeller. This year we introduce Miniatures including dolls houses and Model soldiers to the show. Many of the existing sections have also increased their displays and some have started to include hands on opportunities whereby visitors may ‘have a go’ and take home the results for free. This could not be done without the kind assistance of our supporters to whom we are ever grateful. Regular visitors will see many changes to our trade stands this year, as we move to cover all genres more thoroughly whilst keeping the majority of the space for exhibits. This we feel best represents the wishes of the majority of visitors, whilst ensuring you can purchase what your own modelling projects require. We ask that where possible you use this opportunity to buy something: as only through such, can we ensure continued trade support. We hope you enjoy your visit and with so much to see we advise that you note the locations and timings of the twice daily ‘sailings’ in the swimming pool and the position of our cafeteria opposite the foyer. Mark Henshaw Exhibition Manager

Exhibitors 1:500th / 1:144nd scale Maritime plastic kit modelling Roger Davies I will be building and displaying a range of vessels over the weekend, feel free to ask me questions. 2 1:160th / 1:148th scale Modelling demonstration SK Area group of the N Gauge Society The Society is a non-profit making organisation, run by volunteers for the benefit of the railway modelling hobby in general and N Gauge modellers in particular. We have been supporting and encouraging N Gauge modelling of UK and worldwide railways since 1967. We have approaching 6,000 members in the UK and abroad, and actively welcome new members, whatever their current skill levels. Join our worldwide community of thousands of N gauge modellers, and access a growing range of exclusive products and services, all designed to assist your N Gauge modelling, whether you are a beginner or an expert. This weekend’s demo stand is being staffed by Gary from the SK Area group to answer any queries about the NGS and its products and services. www.ngaugesociety.com www.ngsjoin.com 3 1:152nd scale / 9.42mm Gauge Burnham-on-sea John Perrett Situated on the Somerset coast this town once had an importance as the northern terminus of The Somerset & Dorset Railway which linked the Bristol Channel with the English Channel. The pier at Burnham received rails from Welsh steelworks to be carried onwards to the expanding rail network in southern England. The S&D Railway had many bolster wagon pairs for this traffic. Pleasure steamers - i.e. the paddle steamer “Waverley” - would also call in regularly during the summer, especially on cross channel trips. The pier was used by the lifeboat, which had its own private siding. The railway station, opened on the 3rd of May 1858, unusually featured a short overall roof and a long platform for excursion trains. The station closed to normal passenger workings on the 29th of October 1951, excursion traffic continuing to 8th of September 1962 and closed to goods on the 20th of May 1963. The model was made (to 2mm finescale standards) and exhibited by the late Denys Brownlee. After his death the model was sold and then stored for some years. I recently bought the model, by now a little worse for wear and have set about rejuvenating it to exhibit. Most work has been under the baseboards so far. Now to tidy up above and make some correct rolling stock (a big job!). It is intended to depict the S&DJR scene in the 1920’s – 1930’s and rolling stock is being made to show this. Current stock is mainly borrowed

or adapted “N” gauge. If you have any questions, comments or information I am always happy to talk. 4 1:152nd scale The 2mm Scale Association The 2mm Scale Association exists to promote and facilitate modelling at the scale of 2mm:1ft. The scale has a long history as the smallest practical finescale standard. By joining the Association, members gain access to a wealth of knowledge and our exclusive component range designed to enable simple and accurate construction. www.2mm.org.uk 5 1:148th scale / N Gauge Barclay Road Norman Hambridge Barclay Road is my second attempt at building an N Gauge shunting layout using DG couplings. This latest build learns the lessons of the previous version which proved too small and difficult to operate. I doubled the length and replaced the cassette fiddle yard by a sector plate. The setting is somewhere urban; it could be in West London or Bristol, on the Western Region post steam but before the demise of the hydraulic diesels. A mix of stock in liveries from the 1966 to 1972 period is used, all from the usual manufacturers including a number of (mainly wagon) kits. The through route has been closed and the station is now a terminus. The other platform, beyond the right hand railway bridge, is also closed. Colour light signals were installed when the area was re-signalled, the cabin here being a reduced to a fringe box to the main panel. Local trains run to and from the nearby main city station. Goods traffic is catered for by a Milk Depot, a 'works' and the remains of the old goods yard. Track and buildings have been re-cycled from previous layouts, suitably improved and used again on Barclay Road. Train control is DC using conventional AMR and Gaugemaster units. Points are changed using SEEP motors via a capacitor discharge unit. Uncoupling is by the DG system, using the electro-magnets supplied by Model Signal Engineering. A future development is to replace the dummy signals with operating semaphores. 6 1:148th scale / N Gauge Burnham on sea Alastair Knox Burnham on Sea is my first attempt to model an actual place, using photos, magazines and books for information. Construction of the baseboards is from plywood with Sundeala tops, with integral legs from 2”X1”. Buildings are scratch built by me from Plasticard with the exception of the Queen’s Hotel on the seafront which was made by Ken Ball, and some Metcalfe terraces. Track is Peco Finescale (code 55), turnouts are electrofrog, control is by AMR. Electromagnets are scattered about in strategic places for uncoupling. The aim is to have a small S & D terminus with hands free shunting. The long platform at the front was the excursion one, and specials

ran into Burnham for a few years after regular services were withdrawn. The layout featured in the Dec 2011 issue of British Railway Modelling. Feel free to ask any questions, we hope we can answer them! 7 1:148th scale Abbotsford Robin Fox The layout is basically a double track mainline with a through station which has four platform faces, two of which are bays. There is also an engine shed and small goods yard which can be shunted independently thus adding extra interest to the trains passing on the main line. Apart from the model of Abbotsford school everything is either straight out of the box (RTR) or kit built, the idea being to encourage people to have ago with materials and models they can obtain from the model trade. Abbotsford contains many card kit buildings and is being presented this weekend as an excellent example of the modelling medium. Alongside which Robin will be manning a demonstration of card kit modelling. Including the opportunity to have a go yourself and take home the results for free. 8 1:100th scale 3mm Society Robin Idle The 3mm Scale Society is a scale society; not a gauge society. Its members model in various gauges including 12mm (the original TT gauge), 13.5 and 14.2mm finescale standard gauge, 15.7mm (Irish) and 6.5 and 9mm narrow gauges. All 3mm modellers, whether fine-scale scratch builders, kit builders or those maintaining a classic Triang system, coexist happily in the 3mm society

It is for anyone with an interest in road transport modelling, which includes die-cast collectors, kit builders, die-cast converters and scratch builders. We cater for all scales, and whether plastic, white metal, resin, brass or stainless steel. This year’s display at The Model Show is themed as ‘Recovery trucks’. 12 1:76th scale NARTM Model road vehicles Kevin Green (DISPLAY SATURDAY ONLY) Kit built, scratch built or modified road vehicles, mainly 1/76th scale including some modified larger scale die-cast, lorries. 13 1:76th scale / OO gauge Kirkby Stephen West Ian Macdonald An actual location on the Settle and Carlisle line: this layout depicts the above location in the period 1955 to 1964, which covers the early part of the transition period from Steam to Diesel traction. All track in the scenic area is SMP type ‘J’ code 75 nickel silver. Points in the scenic area are all Marcway and are operated by the switch and rod method. All track and points in the non-scenic area is Peco code 100, with points operated by Peco point motors. Road selection is via a diode matrix, which, by pressing one button sets all the points for the road required. Stock is a mixture of kit built, scratch built and ‘Ready to run’ items. As the Settle and Carlisle was used extensively as a testing ground for many locos, particularly the early diesels we have the opportunity to legitimately run stock which would not normally be seen on this line. All the principle structures are scratch built. The signal box is a Ratio kit conversion. The Scenic walls for the fields are a Javis product. The four signals on the layout are all operational, these are controlled using Fulgurex

slow action point motors. The station building and platform lights, Waiting shelter, Signal box and goods shed are illuminated with a mixture of Grain of Wheat bulbs or LED’s. The campfire at the end of the layout has an Express Models fire simulation module and a Seuthe smoke developer unit installed. 14 1:76th scale / 18.83mm gauge Society stand Scalefour Society The Scalefour Society promotes the concept of railway modelling to the highest standards using a scale of 4mm to 1 foot. It encourages the modeller to apply this concept to all aspects of railway modelling using the track and wheel standards known as P4, with the track gauge at 18.83mm. Membership Secretary, Mr. D.Cockling, 187, Painswick Road, Gloucester,GL4 4AG (enclosing a 9" x 4" SAE) or visit www.scalefour.org 15 1:76th scale / OO Speedlow Paul Harrison OO gauge layout under construction, depicting the speedlink era railfreight operations around Buxton, between 1989 and 1991. 16 1:76th scale / 9mm-narrow gauge OO9 Society Layout and Society stand Charles Insey 009 is a combination of 4mm/1ft scale (i.e. ‘00’) running on ‘N’ gauge, or 9mm gauge, track, to represent narrow gauge railways, such as the wellknown tourist lines in Wales, such as the Ffestiniog or Tal-y-llyn Railways. The scale combines the advantages in terms of detail of 00, but requires less space, narrow gauge trains being typically short and stations small. For the last 40 years, the scale has been supported by the 009 Society (www.009society.com). Locomotives are typically made from kits running on ‘N’ gauge mechanisms, while rolling stock is available in plastic kit form and, most recently, ready-to-run from Peco. The demonstration layout here is 3 foot long and 5 inches deep, and shows that very little space is needed for a working layout. Stop by and have a go! 17 1:76th scale Railway wagon loads Brian Davies Brian will be demonstrating various aspects of model railways including kit built wagons and making loads to fit then. He welcomes any questions with regards to the demonstrations or indeed any other maters which you may feel they can help. He will also have a display of; various rolling stock.

18 1:76th scale Scenic dioramas Mike Rush Mike will be demonstrating various aspects of architectural and scenic model building. 19 1:76th scale / OO finescale Wigan Finescale railway modellers Stephen Roberts Various aspects of 4mm finescale modelling to OO Gauge.

THE British Modelling Directory on the Internet. Ukmodelshops.co.uk 23 1:43rd scale Modelling society stand 7mm Narrow Gauge Association The 7mm Narrow Gauge Association caters for those modelling in 7mm, O gauge scale but on narrow gauge track. Popularly called O-16.5 (or American On30) where OO track is used, though some use dead scale track gauge, O14 (2ft) or O-21 (3ft) for example. Each year we publish six editions of our house magazine Narrow Lines devoted entirely to modelling narrow gauge. We support area groups, have our major show in Burton in June, import Grandt Line parts and Mount Albert Timber from the USA as service to members. Want O Gauge but no space? Want O gauge but have some OO? Want to build something with character. Want it big enough to see? Go 7mm Narrow Gauge. We are the group to join! This weekend we are hosting a large Tower Skidder: a model of a real logging machine built in the early 1940’s by the Willamatte Iron and Steel Co. The machine is basically a high line skidder and was used to bring logs out of the felling site to a landing at a rail head. The logs were then sorted and loaded onto flat beds or log bunks to be taken to the saw mill and loco service and repair facilities. If you have any questions Colin will be on hand to assist. 24 1:43rd scale / O Gauge Somewhere on the front Returning to the show this year as a working layout for its 1 st public outing. WW1 Western Front, trench system, accompanied by display of German WW1 helmets. 25 1:43rd scale / O Gauge Penrhiwceiber Twlch John & Owen Gibbon 7mm layout including a small station and quarry with nearby rolling-stock repair works set between 1970 and 1980. This is teh first showing in the North West for this layout which ahs joined us from South Wales. 26 1:43rd scale / O Gauge Kingsbury Barnhill MRC An O Gauge finescale model railway modelled in the period 1948 after nationalisation. The location is fictitious set on the edge of Bristol on an ex Great Western branch line, where Midland services also traversed. The main liveries still to be seen are Great Western with some LMS but the early BR

liveries are starting to appear. The layout is new, this being our first exhibition outside of our home location in the South West with the model. 27 1:43rd scale / O Gauge Shunters Road Mike and Ian Taylor The layout is constructed as a O Gauge 7mm and modelled as a fictitious station area near the river Parret in Somerset. This was to be the penultimate station before Dunball Wharf laying on the banks of the river Parret. It did have a branch line joining the S&D line between Highbridge and Evercreech Junction at Eddington. Ian Taylor visited Dunball Wharf in 2003 and still some of the structures existed, i.e. station building, wharf, etc. The layout is based in the 1950’s and is surrounded by countryside and not far away from the mighty Great Western mainline. A hive of activity can be noted around the layout. For example repair work being carried out in the workshop. It’s quite a busy station area with goods being shunted and with the occasional passenger trains. These being either a two coach local, or a push-pull service. 28 1:48th / 1:24th / 1:12th scale Poynton Miniatures Club Scale models of various subjects including houses, interiors, shops, beachhuts etc, some with external scenes.

29 1:10th / 1:9th scale Radio Controlled Aircraft Ray Slack Display of flying scale models, built from scratch and kit form proprietary and home-made plans. My particular interest is in World War Two naval aviation. This weekend i am displaying a Vought Kingfisher OS2U-3, Douglas Skryider A1-J, Fairey Fulmar MKI-II and modified Philkraft Bar-Fli fully aerobatic model. The Fulmar is still under construction and some way off flying yet, 600 of these were built at Heaton Chapel. The Kingfisher attended our show in 2014 after a severe crash and would have been considered by many as a right off. Testament to Ray’s skill and after many hours work it is flying again! As a comparison 1:9th scale is 8 x 1/72nd scale. (TMS)

33 580 Modellers IPMS Group 580 Modellers were formed in 2008 and have grown to become a significant force in the world of fine-scale plastic modelling. They exist predominantly to display at shows, such as this one, and operate by booking a table and allowing anyone to display their models on the table by pre-arrangement. They also have a monthly column in the magazine Scale Aviation Modeller International where they report on the model show scene and provide a listing of upcoming events. Further, they have won numerous awards for both 'Best Display' and 'Best in Show' in recent years. As a group we do not take our modelling too seriously and will willingly discuss any aspect of modelling with anybody. If you want to find out more please have a chat with one of the crew on the day or take a card and contact us through our website, 580Modellers.co.uk 34 M.D.K. Gamers War-Gaming Group We are a group of friends who regularly meet to play war games. We will be displaying a selection of the games that they play from various genres that will include historical periods such as Gladiatorial Combat, to 1980's Cold War (featuring a 1:56 scale Russian Krivak Frigate). We will also be displaying some fantasy genres including Victorian Science Fiction/Steampunk and Lord of the Rings games as well as some Sci-Fi. These will be displayed with examples of the types of scenery used in their games along with rule sets for these different periods.' We are also having a figure painting stand this weekend if you fancy trying your hand? 35 Diesel and Electric Modellers United Diesel and Electric Modellers United (demu) was formed in 1994 as an independent society catering for all modellers of the British railways scene during the diesel and electric era regardless of scale/gauge affiliations or modelling ability. We have a network of area groups established across Britain that hold regular meetings and we hold an annual Showcase where the very best of diesel and electric era railway modelling may be seen. We aim to promote all aspects of this period by exchanging information and ideas in our quarterly magazine 'UPDate' and on our members-only web forum, which features modelling and prototype articles on a wide range of subjects. Our website can be found at: www.demu.org.uk 36 Stewards Zone A variety of models in many scales and genres entered by the stewards who are manning the show this weekend.
