Finding Aid creation: February 4, 2013 Size: 3 boxes, 77 folders (2.8 linear feet), one large bound scrapbook, and one small bound empty photo album Call No.: B-2, 3 (Boxes 1-2), B-5 (Box 3, scrapbook and album) Abstract The Williams Family Papers contain a variety of personal documents, vital records, publications, correspondence, and other materials relating to Charles Williams and his family. Background Information The Williams Family Papers contain a variety of personal documents, vital records, publications, correspondence, and other materials relating to Charles Williams and his family. These documents were in the possession of Michael Williams at the time of his death in 2000. The Wade Center purchased them in 2012. See the included genealogy chart for an overview of names, dates, and relationships within the Williams family. Scope and Contents Note The original contents of this collection arrived in various different packages labeled “A” through “Y.” A 48pp. inventory, prepared by Grevel Lindop, described the materials in detail in their original ordering. The contents were re-ordered by the Wade Center according to the system described below, but the original contents listings have been retained and can be accessed upon request. The original containers the materials arrived in were discarded when deemed that they were unsuitable for archival preservation and also held no research content. Those containers are described, however, in the Lindop listing. The collection consists of five series: Correspondence, Documents, Miscellanea, Publications, and Unpublished Materials. The Correspondence series contains several subseries. Business Correspondence and Royalty Statements includes letters, Williams book royalty statements, and financial documents between Michal Williams, Michael Williams, and various publishers, accountants, and in particular David Higham Associates, the executor for the estate of

R.W.Stansby Williams 1/6/22' [In fact the date '1881' seems to be a mistake as the volume opens with a good many items published in 1871. - GL] Following this, a page with one small cutting in the centre, possibly the quotation from one leaf of a daily tear-off calendar: 'Our life is determined for us, and it makes the mind very free if we give up wishing, and only think of bearing what is laid upon us and doing what is given us to do. - George Eliot.'

Williams Family Papers, page 15 The remainder of the book is a scrap book into which have been pasted an enormous number (several hundreds) of stories, essays and poems by RWSW cut from the original publications. Towards the back, a large number of pages of magazines thrust in together; evidently there was the intention of pasting them in, but the task has not been completed. A considerable number of blank leaves at the end of the volume. The single leaf from a book of ‘Literary Recollections’ is from the autobiography of James Payn, Victorian writer and editor. [I'm not sure anyone has quite realised the sheer scale of RWSW's work as an author. He is extremely prolific and must have been a noted figure in his specialised literary world.]
