Wales update The Wales office has had their thinking caps on wondering just how we can top our amazing efforts from May 2015. We’re excited to bring back our Paint Purple exhibitions, which we ask stroke survivors to enter from across Wales. We had some great feedback from stroke units in hospitals all around Wales, that Make May Purple was a fantastic team building opportunity. There were blood pressure events, purple days, flash-mobs and bake sales so we’re excited to see how they go bigger and more purple for 2016.

After the success of our Turning Wales Purple photos, which we took in front of famous Welsh landmarks, we’ve been wondering what’s next. We’ve set our sights on the impressive Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay and we’re currently cooking up some ideas for an interactive purple painting.

5 steps

to the perfect purple manicure

In 2015, we saw lots of different and creative ways to Make May Purple for stroke. While having fun, many of you were also raising money for the charity’s lifesaving work. Thank you. A pop-up nail bar got people’s attention, so we tried it in our office and it really worked.

Sign up a couple of talented friends/volunteers to do the manicures. Agree a date, time and venue for your nail bar. 3. Publicise the event and suggested donations for each treatment – reminding everyone that the money goes to a great cause. Set up a couple of treatment tables and a booking list and start pampering. Share your photos on Facebook and Twitter with the hashtag #MakeMayPurple and don’t forget to bank your money.

It isn’t only for ladies either. In 2016 real men get manicured too – even the Stroke Association’s Chief Executive got in on the action.

Purple Megastar! Paula Smejka had been engaged for only three months when her fiancé, John, 58, had a stroke on Christmas Day 2011. The stroke left him with communication difficulties and weakness on his right side. John was no longer able to work so Paula gave up her full-time job as an administrator to care for him and they married in June 2012. After seeing the impact that stroke had had on John and her family, Paula threw herself in raising awareness of stroke. During Make May Purple 2015, Paula came up with the brilliant idea of raising funds and awareness by wearing a different purple outfit each day. Her creative wardrobe included a feather boa, an apron, even a cheerleading outfit all of which she shared on social media. Her daily fashion choices proved a huge hit. Why not join Paula in May 2016 and arrange a fun ‘wear purple’ day at work or with your family and friends. Encourage everyone to wear something purple and pay a donation to the Stroke Association. Make sure you share your purple outfits with us on Facebook and Twitter with the hashtag #MakeMayPurple.

Purple fashion statements Don't leave the house without a conquer stroke wristband. Wear the wristband with pride, and show your support for stroke survivors. Get your friends and family to wear theirs too. You can order your wristband using the order form in your Make May Purple for stroke magazine or from stroke.org.uk/makemaypurple
