Tips to Transfer Learnings Keep the following tips in mind when conducting the training. You may wish to review these tips and incorporate them into your session planning.

1. Adults learn when they feel they need to learn. Show the participants how this session will benefit them in their jobs and at home.

2. Adults learn through practical application. Use the exercises found in this Leader Guide so that the participants can apply the concepts in a practical context. Also, provide reinforcement tools such as the book The Leadership Pill™ and the participant workbook to enhance learning from this session. Consider using the online self assessment or the 360-degree feedback version of the Foundations of Leadership Assessment as session prework (go to http://www.kenblanchard.com/areas/fla.cfm for information).

FOR PREVIEW S E S O P R U P 3. Adults learn by solving realistic problems. ONLY

Analyze real work situations during the session to create participant buy in and engagement. People will learn more, and more easily, if the content is relevant to their work.

4. Adults learn in an informal environment. Design your training room to be informal, if possible. Try to avoid classroom-style seating. If appropriate, encourage participants to wear casual clothing. Encourage discussion and interaction that will allow participants to feel comfortable.

5. Adults learn by different training methods. Vary your training methods: combine discussions, roleplaying, case studies, self-evaluations, and action planning in your training session. By using a variety of methods, you will reinforce your message and promote participant involvement.

6. Transfer of learning can be determined by follow-up. Follow-up methods are crucial when determining the success of training. Feedback from your participants’ managers, surveys, or follow-up training sessions can help you evaluate the extent to which the key learnings have been transferred and are being used on the job. © 2004 The Blanchard Family Partnership.
