You can feel it. You can see it. We’re like the Jefferson’s. We’re moving on up. Our dues increase is allowing us to be able to put dearly needed funds into direly needed amenity improvements. All the while, we’re putting money in the bank to make even bigger improvements in the near future. Though we still have a ways to go, we’re getting there. Our ongoing partnership with the City of Daphne is yielding improvements in our neighborhood like we’ve never seen before. We’re drafting a sketch of a new Lake Forest that we’ll all be proud to call home, which is much more than you can already see on the ground. The City of Daphne’s Public Works Department is hard at work installing new sidewalks on Ridgewood from Dunbar Loop to Montclair Loop. When they finish that, they will pick up where they left off at Worchester and continue on to the Ridgewood Pool. This will complete the 1 mile of sidewalks that the City of Daphne has budgeted for 2016. We all need to take every opportunity we can to thank our current council members for the decisions they have made and encourage them to keep it up. We have incredible leadership in the city, not only in our elected officials, but also, our city employees that show off their talents in making improvements all over our city. We make up nearly half of the city’s population, and that fact is not lost on them. I hope you’ve had the opportunity to see the Montclair Pool. It looks amazing. We’ve had the pleasure of working with some first class professional contractors whose ultimate goal is customer satisfaction. I’ve got to give props to Blue Haven

Steve Sasser Pools who refurbished the pool and expanded the pool deck; Baldwin Fence who installed the new fence and handrail, and who installed and maintains our electronic gate system; and Hobbs Tree Service who removed the trees and low hanging limbs. In house, our golf maintenance crew has installed and maintained our silt fence, made some landscaping improvements, and helped spread some paint on the bath house. I can’t leave out Sammy Dean from the Yacht Club who put on the final coats and touch-es of paint, and of course our GM, Rob Wright who logged in more time than he cares to admit to deliver a great final product or our membership. Alabama Pool Works is responsible for keeping our pools clean and keeping them running. Over the years, they have been spot on for keeping the water crystal clear and keeping the property very well maintained. The next big tickets, (as far as we know), is the landscaping at Montclair, bulkhead at the marina, and the Ridgewood Pool, We’re putting off landscaping at the Montclair Pool until after the pools close this season. It’s just too big of a project to try to do when the property is full of people and their vehicles. We have approved a design by HMR that will make to whole property absolutely beautiful. We have also asked HMR to help us with design for the bulkhead and Ridgewood Pool.

We’re also in the process of bringing our website up to date. We’re working on a much cleaner, user friendly site with new photos and fresh information. We’re going to make it easy to access information about all of our amenities, clubs and programs. You’ll even be able to schedule appointments. We’re going to incorporate our member accounts so you can view your account and make payments online. There are a host of Facebook pages with some ties to Lake Forest. We’re getting that under control so we’ll have an official Facebook page, and we’ll do the same with Twitter. We’re trying to make good information more accessible and be able to show off some of the beautiful property Lake Forest has to offer. Covenant amendments are coming. We’re still working on those. Keeping up property appearance, parking in front yards, and ATV’s are complaints that our office gets nearly every day. Our covenants are legal documents and they take time to make perfect. Ours haven’t been amended in over 40 years, so there’s plenty of language and subject material that is just out of date. As soon as we can, we’ll have a proposal for amendments and we’ll put out notice for our membership to vote on them. I encourage you to get out an enjoy some of our amenities. You can’t beat a sunset on the deck at the Yacht Club. Our golf course is looking absolutely spectacular! The pools are up and running with new chaise loungers. The stables look great and you can schedule lessons or rides. Tennis is busting at the seams with league play. We’ve got a lot to enjoy, you’ve just got to get out there and enjoy it.

remember that we did a pool card upgrade and at no cost you must bring in your pool card to be reactivated. The pools are open 7 days a week from 8:00 am to 7:00pm. For those who don’t have a pool card please contact the office at 626-0788. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call me. If you wish to

have a pool party we have a place for you. We also ask that you limit the number of guests that you take to the pools to 4 or less per membership, not per person. We want the pools available to all of our owners. School is ending; please watch for kids in the road. We have a camp for everything and everybody! There are many things for kids to do, tennis camps, golf camps and the swim team. The

Yacht Club has many family priced oriented nights and a swing set play area for the kids. The BOGO burger night is huge and great deal and great meal for Lake Forest members. We are also doing all you can eat crawfish on Tuesdays and Tacos on Sunday. Remember Father’s Day. Have fun. As a reminder, summer is a time when work is done on homes and the property. Please remember to check with the Lake

Forest Architectural Committee before you do any work. We do allow members to walk on the golf course when the pin flags have been removed. If you see the flags in, do not go on the course, for your own safety. We have a lot of dogs around here. Please be considerate of your neighbors and clean up behind your pet, thank you.

Lake Forest

Women’s Club

Written By: Lura Kauffman The April meeting of the Lake Forest Women’s Club was held on April 21, 2016 at the Lake Forest Yacht Club. The tables were beautifully decorated with floral arrangements made by member Mary Loury. A report was made by Lura Kauffman about purchasing chair pads for the banquet chairs at the Lake Forest Yacht Club. The original price quoted was $1500.00 at Rama’s in Daphne; however, the owner stated that the cushions could not be made for less than $30.00 each which would amount to a total of $3,000.00. Next we explored having them made by a private person.

Hostesses Marty Boor, Nancy Randolph, Karolla Buyse and Mary Loury with one of their special door prizes made by Mary Loury

The fabric would run about $500 and the labor would be $2,500.00. Again way too much money. Finally by checking the internet a company was found that makes chair pads for the exact banquet chair that the Yacht Club uses and they only charge $5.99 each. Plans are underway to try to order these chair pads.

Hostesses Marty Boor, Nancy Randolph, Karolla Buyse and Mary Loury took over the meeting and we enjoyed a delicious luncheon. The lovely table decorations were won as door prizes by Judy Baust, Lura Kauffman, Lucy Wirth, Wanda Patterson, Jerri Boutwell and Jean Wildenhaus.

Lake Forest Garden Club

Written By Lura Kauffman Photos Submitted by Lura Kauffman The May meeting of the Garden Club was held on May 5, 2016 at the Lake Forest Yacht Club. Our final meeting for the 2015-2016 year was attended by 20 members and one guest. Judy Baust read the Inspiration and the Minutes of the April meeting and the Financial Report were approved as submitted. Lura Kauffman reported that chair pads for the banquet chairs at the Lake Forest Yacht Club had been found and could be purchased for $5.99 each. The pads will have Velcro ties and zipper closures and have been approved in black by Rob Wright.

The Senior Golfers and the Men’s Golf Association as well as the Women’s Club and Rob Wright have agreed to share in the cost so the final cost will be divided by five. All members agreed to support the purchase. President Janet Pruitt recognized outgoing officers (Second Vice President Dana Sawyer, Secretary Lura Kauffman and Treasurer Peggy Sheffield.) Lura Kauffman and Peggy Sheffield presented Janet Pruitt with a gift of two garden planter chairs with matching plants for her much appreciated service as President and she received a well deserved round of applause.

Next Janet Pruitt recognized the Standing Committee chairmen: Elaine Maxime, Judy Baust, Dana Sawyer, Linda Locklin, Kathy Meilleur, Mary Williams, Barbara Cummings, Tomasina Werner, Lura Kauffman, Dottie Zimmer and Mary Wlliams.

Door Prizes were won by Ann Pierce, Ruth Gross, Judy Baust, Linda Locklin, John King and Peggy Sheffield.

Everyone enjoyed a delicious luncheon of quiche, fresh fruit, salad and dessert which was then followed by our annual plant swap.

Have a great summer everyone! We look forward to seeing you in the fall!

The Horticulture Awards winner was announced by Patricia Popp. Tied for second place were Ruth Gross and Ann Pierce with 9 points each and the winner with 12 points was Lura Kauffman. Her prize was a beautiful bird house. Linda Locklin performed the ceremony of confirmation of the new officers for the 2016-2017 year: President Dana Sawyer, First Vice President Janet Pruitt, Second Vice President Sue Crank, Secretary Lura Kauffman and Treasuer Dianne Foster.

The Fishing Hole

FISHING SUMMER TIME PATTERNS

By Billy Harrell Harbor Master

June and summer is finally here and the fishing is great. The water temps are in the upper 70’s and finally beginning to clear up in the bay. We had some pretty good rains in April and May which had put a damper on fishing in the upper Delta. Strong southern winds have pushed the cloudy water north and brought in some salinity in the upper delta along the Mobile River and Point Clear to Daphne. So, try and find some clear water and work the docks and fishing reefs along the bay. Speckled trout and reds will be looking for a quick meal and the best thing for them is live shrimp

minnows on a Carolina rig is the best bet but a soft plastic on a jig head works great also. Now is the time to get out and catch fish while the water temperatures are in the 70 to 80 degree range. By early July the water will start to get warm and slow the trout fishing down for the summer.

Billy Harrell under a popping cork. If you can’t find shrimp, artificial baits such as a soft plastic on a jig head, or a top water plug such as a Mirrorlure Top Dog or Top Pup will work just as well. The Flounder should start showing up this month in good numbers, so look around sandy points and pilings around docks along the bay. Fishing with bull

Also, when out fishing be aware of the weather conditions this time of year and let someone know your float/trip plan. The winds can get up quick out of the south and can make for an uncomfortable trip back to the dock. Till next month, keep a tight line. Billy Harrell

Veteran’s Pension

By: Drew Wenzel, Caldwell Wenzel & Asthana, PC

Veteran’s Pension is an underutilized benefit that is available to many veterans of the United States Armed Forces who have need of additional income in order to provide for their daily health and welfare. The general requirements for Veteran’s Pension eligibility are as follows: be honorably discharged from the armed forces; be aged 65 years or older; and served at least 90 days on active duty or 24 months if the service occurred after September 7, 1980 (or the full length of your call up time). Furthermore, you must have served at least one day during a “wartime period” as defined by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. Pension amounts and availability vary based on the income and assets of the veteran; whether the veteran has a disability; and whether the veteran is confined to a nursing home. It is important to remember that filing for a Veteran’s Pension is different from other benefits offered by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, and as such, there is no requirement for a service connection if claiming a disability. Veteran’s Pension is also available to surviving spouses and children in certain instances. One of the chief reasons that many Veterans do not apply for benefits is because of the seemingly complex and lengthy application process. At Caldwell Wenzel & Asthana, PC we will help you with your claim and provide additional advice regarding the other estate and long term planning tools that may be beneficial once an applicant has received an award letter. Drew Wenzel is a partner at Caldwell Wenzel & Asthana, PC and is an accredited attorney with the United States Department of Veteran’s Affairs for the preparation, presentation and prosecution of claims for veteran’s benefits. In 2014, Drew co-authored the Alabama Gulf Coast Edition of Don’t Go Broke in a Nursing Home!, a hands on guide to long-term care, medicaid eligibility, veteran’s benefits, and legally protecting your assets in the State of Alabama. He practices primarily in the areas of estate planning and elder law. He was born and raised in Foley, Alabama, and attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. Upon graduation, Drew was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. He served for over seven years as an aviation officer and cargo helicopter pilot including two combat tours in Iraq.
