T HE G RAND K NIGHT ’ S R EPORT

Our Council has been very busy since the beginning of September. Our DGK Mike Warren will cover the events in his report. The bulk of the work for these events are conducted by a core group of Knights. There are however many Knights who do not show up for meetings or get involved with any of our activities. For those of you who are in the latter group I would encourage you to attend at least one meeting a year and to help out with the odd event, you may find this to be rewarding. You are not obliged to get involved however as a member of our council please consider attending our meetings and helping out with a few events. With that being said we have a busy schedule of events coming up in the next few months and we will look forward to seeing new faces. Our first Annual New Year’s Eve party will be held this year. If you have not purchased your tickets please contact Mike Warren, tickets are $25.00 per person. With the Christmas Season upon us both Suzanne and I would like to wish you and your families a Blessed Christmas and a healthy New Year. Grand Knight Ian Sheppard

Deputy Grand Knight’s Report Our council is one of the most active in the Province of Ontario. I would like to thank to our Service Directors for their continued leadership in these worthwhile events. In September, Community Director Jim Smith organized a team of Knights to help the CWL with the Parish Harvest Dinner. This was followed up with the Adopt-a-Highway clean up under the direction of Brother Claude Goyette. Next came our first Community Breakfast in October. In November we held the first annual Turkey Dinner led by Brother Allen Galachiuk which was a great success. In December we are holding our first New Year's Eve Gala and by all indications it will be another well attended event. Tickets are still being sold and tables can be reserved by calling our Deputy Grand Knight. Council Director Scott Weatherdon organized the ceremony for the Initiation of Officers, and our Memorial Mass and reception which pays tribute to our deceased Brother Knights. Brother Knight Pierre Boucher and his wife Dianne along with donations of food from our Executive prepared our December wine and cheese reception for the council. Youth Director Josh Barber with help from several Knights conducted the K of C Soccer Challenge at Ste. Anne's Catholic Elementary School and initiated the Substance Abuse poster contest which had numerous entries judged by Nancy Albota. Josh presented several certificates and awards to the students involved. Church Director Dan Burnett led a crew of Knights in the installation of storm windows and the Nativity Scene. Dan also commanded a team of 4th Degree Knights from our council in the Remembrance Day masses and recently organized a team of Knights to aid the Office Secretaries with the decoration of the Church for Christmas.

Family Director Ryan Sandul once again organized the Children's Christmas Party for a group of sixty children, parents and grandparents. Brother Knight Jean-Marc Thibault was our Santa and the children and adults were most appreciative. Membership Director Sandy Duff has been busy all fall with the recruitment of prospective Knights and expects our council will achieve its membership quota for the fraternal year. He urges all Brother Knights to be actively involved in recruiting friends, and fellow parishioners to our order. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Brother Knights along with their spouses for their dedication and time in making our council events successful and appreciated by our Parish Community. Without the continued support of our Church administration led by Father Paul Shepherd and his office staff the acceptance and love we all have for our Parish would not be possible.

Merry Christmas to all and may we all have a wonderful New Year.

Mike Warren, Deputy Grand Knight

Fraternal Counselor Report Your Shield of Strength As the economy begins to shake off a half-decade of turbulent times, the Knights of Columbus is celebrating 14 consecutive years of insurance business growth.

We’ve weathered the storm when others haven’t, because it’s not our first. We’ve weathered the storm when others couldn’t, because we know how to navigate. We’ve weathered the storm when others made costly mistakes, because we don’t take on unnecessary risk. Our strength is undeniable. More members than ever before see it, and are using our shield to protect their families. Are you? If you need life insurance – and chances are you do – why would you look anywhere else? Let us be your shield. Did you know that the Knights of Columbus is one of the largest life insurers in North America? The Knights of Columbus has surpassed $99 billion of insurance in force, and is a member of the Fortune 1000. Did you know that the Knights of Columbus consistently earns the highest possible ratings for its ethical business practices and sound investment strategies? A.M. Best, a global leader in the rating and analysis of insurance companies, has given the Knights of Columbus their highest financial strength rating (A++, Superior) for 40 consecutive years. There is simply no more highly rated insurance company in North American than your Knights of Columbus. And, last year, the Knights of Columbus was named a “World’s Most Ethical Company” by the Ethisphere Institute. Did you know that providing financial benefits for members was the reason that Venerable Father Michael McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus? Our founding charter from 1882 makes it clear, the Knights of Columbus’ primary goal is “to render financial aid to its members and the beneficiaries of members.” Did you know that the Knights of Columbus offers a full, top-quality product line of life insurance, disability income insurance, long-term care insurance, and retirement annuities? We have products and solutions to fit your family’s needs and budgets. I am available to provide a complementary, comprehensive analysis to assess your situation. Did you know that there are a number of products and services that you may be eligible for, just for being a Knight? Whether it’s our family fraternal benefits program, our survivor benefits, or our Personal Planning workbook, there are a lot of ways that the Knights of Columbus Insurance program can benefit you and your family. There might be quite a bit that you don’t know about Knights of Columbus Insurance and about the fraternal and financial benefits of your membership. Join the hundreds of thousands of your brother knights who use our shield as their protection. Contact me today to find out more. Roberto Brenes

District Deputy Report It is hard to believe that another year is almost over. While the weather doesn't show it, we are only two weeks away from the most Blessed Feast of Christmas. Our Councils have put out their outside Nativity Scenes and plans are underway to decorate our Churches after Advent. Two weeks ago I attended our semi-annual meeting for District Deputies in Toronto. I will meet with the Council Executive Members in January to brief them on the content of our meeting. I can tell you that an Icon of the Holy Family will be shown throughout Ontario in 2016 ( a picture of the Icon is depicted on the cover of the September Columbia Magazine). We don't have a schedule for the visitation of this beautiful picture yet but each of our Councils will have the Icon for a one week period. Your Council may want to begin discussions on the type of activities you may want organize prior to its arrival. Prior to my trip to Toronto I asked our Financial Secretaries to provide me with an estimate of how much money each Council has raised and donated so far this fraternal year. I was not sure if I needed this information for our meeting but it was better to have it if required. Our three Councils in District 98 have donated or committed to almost $30,000.00. Brothers, this amount has resulted from a tremendous amount of hard work on the part of our Knights and I sincerely thank you. Included in these works were a donation of 10 cases of brand new winter coats from our Councils for the "Coats for Kids Program". These coats are shipped directly to the Ottawa Catholic School Board for distribution. Brother SK Bill Country has been involved with this program since its inception and I would like to thank Bill at this time for his continued hard work. Brothers, I am afraid I have to close this message on a sad note. Our Knights at Canon John Burke Council 6217, St. Martin de Porres Parish, will gather tomorrow to support one of our Brother Knights who lost his son-in-law suddenly last week. Unfortunately tragedy does not take a holiday. The reason I mention this is to ask each of you to please make sure your wife and family are protected in case something happens to you. On behalf of my wife Myrna and I, we wish you and your families a Very Blessed and Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and hopefully, a prosperous New Year.

Fraternally, Barry Nicholls, DD 98.

BOTTLE RETURNS Many thanks to all who brought returnable bottles or made a financial contribution towards this cause. Bottles collected at our Sept meeting gave us a $31.60 to start off this new Fraternal Year.

Membership Director We are about one third into our current fraternal year, have completed a successful Membership Blitz and have welcomed seven new members to St. Patrick’s Council. D’Arcy Dufresne and Steve Muldoon have rejoined the Order, Michael Perseo has transferred in and Fred Constantine, Kevin Doucette, Michael Durrer and Tom Nimmo have joined our Council as new Knights. A hearty welcome aboard to all! Don’t be strangers! Our recruiting goal again this year is 20 new or returning members. We are currently at the 30% mark. We do have several prospects for membership but still have a long way to go and need your help. One-on-one recruiting has always had the most success. We need our current members to be active in identifying prospects for membership. Be proud of your membership in our Order and share that pride and the joy of being a Knight with others. Ask about interest, provide some information and get contact data. Membership applicants must be not less than 18 years of age and be practical Catholics in good standing with the Catholic Church. Our next focus for candidates is our First Degree on February 2nd 2016. Let’s get recruiting! The flip side of recruiting is retention. In the last two years we have lost eleven members (four last year, seven this year) for various reasons. We need to do better. All our brother Knights joined our merry band of Catholic gentlemen with certain expectations. It is up to us to make all our brother Knights feel welcome at all times and invite them individually at every opportunity to become involved. The key is involvement in some Council activities by the majority of our able membership, not the same old gang every time. Spreading the workload lightens the burden but also makes everyone feel involved and useful.

Our next Second Degree is expected to be in early January 2016. Our next Third Degree will be at Our Lady of the Visitation Council in South Gloucester on Saturday morning January 16th 2016. It is recommended that Knights complete their First, Second and Third Degrees within their first year of membership, thus learning more about what it means to be a Knight of Columbus. Please try to make time to take the Degrees you need.

Cindy and I would like to wish you and yours a happy and holy Christmas season, filled with family and fun. Take the time to enjoy your loved ones and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. All the best in 2016. Sandy Duff, Membership Director

Your bulletin producers Steve & Larry Thank everyone who contributed to this publication. Without your contribution only a small portion of our Membership would have knowledge of all the great projects our Council is involved in. 8
