The Sweets of May, in Kendall and beyond... The first week of May leading up to Mothers Day is a time when we can take a moment to pause and reflect on our mothers, grandmothers, aunties, and special mother figures in our lives—including Mother Earth who provides for all of our material needs and sustains us in this life. What are the small and genuine ways we can show gratitude and give back to our mothers? How can we come together and celebrate the phenomenon of motherhood that has ensured the continuation of life and love for countless generations? If you’re doing something special to celebrate this Sunday in Kendall, why not take a photo and post it on the Kendall Community Centre Facebook page? We would love you to share it with us. The Kendall Op-Shop has some Mother’s Day gift ideas (p.8), or why not try the iKew Centre, Kendall Craft Centre, Bookends, or Miss Nellie’s for some sweet treats? There are also sure to be some extra special gifts at the Kendall Community Centre Markets this Thursday. In other news this month, the Kendall Music Exchange will be held on Friday 7th May, featuring the talented duo “Together Again”. The Music Exchange is in need of some enthusiastic and reliable new organisers to ensure its continuation! If this sounds like you, turn straight to page 2 for the details! Later in the month, if you’re looking for a day trip with a splash of culture and colour, the annual Art in the Vale exhibition at Hannam Vale Hall is coming up on the 20th-22nd May (p.12). Although it has been unseasonably warm this autumn, winter is still approaching, and there are many opportunities to keep fit and warm in Kendall with tennis, pilates, tai chi, kayaking, golf, or even a simple yet beautiful walk down to our river.

KENDALL CELEBRATED ANZAC DAY under threatening skies but it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the large crowd who attended to honour the fallen and to cheer on the marchers. Mr Lance Gainey did a wonderful job with the organisation of the service and many local schools and organisations were represented. Cam-

den Haven High School Vice Captains Patrick Moulding and Abby Wilson gave an inspiring talk and Abby sang beautifully. The Kendall Pony Club put on a great show and a couple of members were delegated to follow along behind the horses with bag and shovels (they got a cheer too!!). This Friday, 6th May, ‘TOGETHER AGAIN’ will be the main guest artists at the Kendall Music Exchange. ‘Together Again’ are Pete Di Losa and Khristina Joy. Pete plays Trumpet and Flugel Horn and Khristina is a vocalist and an ukulele enthusiast. Pete’s career has wandered through Brass Bands and as an ABC Concert soloist, onto lead trumpet in Big Bands and Music Theatre productions. He has enjoyed the profile of a Session musician and is currently dedicated to writing and recording his own compositions which have received recognition locally and internationally. Khristina has had a busy music career as a professional singer. She has recorded for ABC Radio and TV. Her arrangement of Big Spender earned her international acclaim when it was listed in the Top 100 Best Cover Versions by Limelight in USA.

step out of the shower and into the world of unaccompanied harmony. Whatever you think about their singing, you will not forget seeing Blokes Notes. Now a call for HELP!: my dear husband Brian and I have been organising the Kendall Music Exchange for almost two years now. In that time, it has grown into a very popular, not for profit community event. It seems to meet a real need in the community, as it gives local musicians a chance to perform in front of an always appreciative audience. We are now calling for somebody else to take our role within the next few months. Macular Degeneration Awareness Week

The Kendall Community Centre

By Natasha French

Camden Haven optometrist Natasha Barnard-French says 1 in 7 people over 50 have some evidence of macular degeneration, an alarming statistic given the rapidly ageing Australian population. That’s why Panoptic Vision is supporting Macular Disease Foundation Australia in urging Kendall residents to visit their optometrist this Macular Degeneration Awareness Week (22-28 May). An eye test and macula check is critical to detect macular degeneration which occurs at the back of the eye. You can have the early signs without knowing, even before symptoms occur. Risk factors include age, a direct family history and smoking. Almost 1.2 million Australians over 50 have some evidence of macular degeneration, making it Australia’s leading cause of severe vision loss and blindness. Without appropriate prevention and treatment measures, this number is set to increase to 1.7 million by 20301.

local optometrist this week and commended Macular Disease Foundation Australia for helping to raise awareness of eye health in general. “Macular Degeneration Awareness Week is a great reminder to make an appointment to visit your optometrist today,” said Ms Quilty. “Let’s work together and stop Australians going blind.” For more information or a free Amsler grid call Macular Disease Foundation Australia on 1800 111 709 or visit www.mdfoundation.com.au

“Early detection is key to saving sight,” said Natasha “The very early signs of macular degeneration can now be easily identified with an eye test. Early diagnosis gives the best opportunity to save sight by adopting nutrition and lifestyle practices and timely access to treatment.” Macular Disease Foundation Australia Chief Executive Officer Julie Heraghty says the cost of vision loss is too high. “This is a chronic disease and I urge you to make an eye test part of the normal health routine for you and your family. “If you notice any sudden changes in your vision it is essential to seek medical attention urgently. The ‘wet’ form of macular degeneration can progress very quickly and requires rapid treatment to save sight. An Amsler grid can also be used to self monitor for changes in vision between professional appointments and is available free from the Foundation,” said Ms Heraghty. Optometry Australia Chief Executive Officer Genevieve Quilty urged people to go to their

Thank you for your generosity By Tin Kendall Op-Shop and Camden Haven Public’s Generosity Each year in March, the sales income and profits accrued are redistributed to those in need by Kendall Op-shop. Starting from 2009 The Kendall community Op-shop has put financial support back into our community in Community Grants, Sponsorships and Charity Grants. One of the recipients in 2015 March with Charity grant was “Su Educational Institute” from Myanmar (Burma). Retired academics and school teachers volunteered to set up a vocational educational training institute in a slum area of Yangon (Rangoon) in 2013. The disadvantaged youth who cannot afford to attend tertiary education were either unemployed or working as casual cheap labourers. Su Education Institute aimed to get their educational needs and now they are in workforce with qualifications in English language skills, Accountancy, Computing and Hospitality. Some financial support is needed as the institute is on the verge of closing down due to lack of funds. The volunteering lecturers told her they were short of funds for electricity cost and teaching aids. The Kendall Op- Shop donated the initial $1000. More funds were raised by selling Aung Min Gala farm produce at Thursday Kendall Bazaar, Top End Fruit shop in Laurieton and donations from Camden Haven Public sending $3000 in total to Su Educational Institute. The money is equivalent to 2.4 million local currency Kyats with exchange rate of 800 kyats per A$. The financial support is used in purchasing new air conditioner, TV, Epsom printer (XP 420), Fluorescent lights, servicing old air conditioners and repair of 30 old computers donated from the Myanmar public. In appreciation to Op-shop for the initial ground funding, a thank you card was framed and put up in Op-shop for the public to view. The support of Kendall Op-shop and donations from Camden Haven public have solved the financial difficulties of Su Educational Institute for disadvantaged children. Now every year, using these teaching aids, almost 200 graduates will be entering into workforce they deserve to be working as office workers every year. The students and the volunteering lecturers are saying repetitively “Thank

Celebrating Henry Kendall’s Birthday By Sandra Haswell

The Kendall Public School had been busy before the holidays composing poems to honour the poet Henry Kendall. Each year during Heritage Week the schoolchildren send in their entries to the Kendall Heritage Society, to be judged by the ladies of the CWA. This year the standard is high, with many competing for the first time. First Prize goes to Jayla Middlemiss for her poem titled “Happiness”, Second Prize is to Jasmine O’Brien for her poem “My Morning”and Third Prize to Emelia Naumov for her poem entitled “Shifa”. There were three Highly Commended, Amahli Kennedy, Lilly Thomas and Jemma B. Congratulations to all. The poetry will be on display at the Kendall Services Club and prize money will be presented during the beginning of next term. A big Thank You to the teachers and Principal of Kendall Public School who continue to encourage the literacy of the children. The Kendall Heritage Society recently were given an oil painting by Dee Davis depicting the All Saints Church in Comboyne Street Kendall. Kay Lewis and her husband travelled from Lithgow to present this painting to our Society. It had belonged to her late father, and she thought it would be nice for the painting to come to Kendall, where the KHS with permission from the Community Hall Trust have hung it in the hall.

Kendall District Gardeners Club By Jim Lewin On Monday 18 April John Carter welcomed everyone any visitors. Last month’s meeting a guest speaker who gave an informative talk about growing herbs. There was quite a bit of discussion about preparing for the Open Gardens to be held the following Saturday. A large number of people have volunteered to assist at the various gardens. John had brought in a number of impatiens cuttings (red and pink) which were rapidly taken by appreciative members. Bud had brought in some lemon myrtle branches for people to take home. There were also some Canna Lilies to be taken. There is a book for people to write down what cuttings they would like and member were asked to peruse it from time to time to see if they could help out. Today’s speaker was Barry Barr a well-known local resident. Barry talked about growing up in the area on a dairy farm up Lorne Road and later around Kew. Barry spent most of his life as a dairy farmer but deregulation of dairy farms. Prior to deregulation there were at least 50 dairy farms along Lorne Road through to Kendall and now there are about 3. Lack of profitability caused by the reduced selling price of milk and increasing costs caused most of the farmers to depart the dairy industry. Barry gave us some interesting tips about growing sweet potatoes. They seem to prefer poorer soils. They great sliced and cooked

on the BBQ. You should not let the runners establish new roots as they will form tubers resulting in a crop of lots of little potatoes instead of larger ones. The runners should be cut off before the first frosts. Frost burnt vegetation will cause the flavour of the potato to deteriorate. If you don’t get frosts then when the vegetation dies off the potato is ripe for eating. The plants do not seem to get attacked by the local wildlife. The tubers can stay in the ground over winter and harvested as required. Barry Barr talking to the Gardeners Barry has been involved in many volunteer organisations over the years including the Lorne Bush Fire Brigade and the Camden Haven Rural Fire Service Also a member of the Camden Haven Apex Club for 18 years. Barry is also a foundation member of the Ikew information centre. He is on the board the Kendall Services Club and also a member of the Camden Haven Landcare group and the Kendall Community Boatshed. He also helps with Driver Reviver. He strongly urged people to get involved with volunteer groups as he has found it very rewarding. Members asked Barry a number of questions and would

The aim of this event is to provide an opportunity for local artists to display their work and to raise money for local community organisations. Art In the Vale has grown each year with the support of well-known local artists Ken Strong, Sally Horton and Harold Le Jeune, together with a growing collection of local artists, including those showing their work for the first time. We look forward with keen anticipation to viewing even more of the latest works from our local art community at this year’s exhibition. All works will be offered for sale and two viewers’ choice prizes will be awarded. Entry forms available at Manning Regional Gallery, Taree, Port Macquarie and Kew Tourist Information Centres, and a number of other local venues. If you are an exhibiting artist and would like the opportunity to display your work or are just an art lover interested in attending the opening night, please contact: Ross Brown 026556 7630 [email protected] or Jocelyn Strong 02 6556 7796. [email protected] for details. Hannam Vale is considered one of the most beautiful river valleys in the Manning region, and Hannam Vale Community Hall boasts all the charm and character you would expect of a building which has served this small rural community since its construction back in 1927, providing an enchanting backdrop for the growing display of work by many local artists. Hannam Vale Hall is a unique community development. Owned and built by the community from timber harvested and milled within the valley, on land donated by a local farming family, the Hall and its grounds are entirely dependent on the local community for maintenance and improvements.
