The John Fisher School Year 9 Newsletter Lent Term

Welcome to the Spring edition of the Year 9 Newsletter.

Upcoming Dates Monday 16th April

As we come to the end of a very busy term, it is always satisfying to look back on, and celebrate, the achievements of the Pupils in Year 9 over the last 3 months. With the Options process complete, the focus of next term will be on the end of year exams that take place in early May. It is most important that your son realises that his

was in Barnet where we managed to progress in to the quarter finals from a challenging group. We narrowly lost to Eton after a tremendous fight back in the last couple of

minutes - this really showed the true courage of the team. Our next tournament was in Reigate, where we found ourselves in the “Group of Death”. We beat national champions London Oratory and also Dulwich College. Once again we progressed to the quarter finals losing to St Paul’s by two points. The team showed great determination and character throughout the tournament and especially in the quarter final. The

Surrey Final, this time against a very strong Wimbledon College team. We narrowly lost by a conversion and the whole team was distraught, losing the final for the third time in a row. I would like to thank our outstanding coaches Mr Gunn and Mr Mawer, who have been very supportive throughout. We appreciate all the time and effort that they have given up for us - we are very fortunate and grateful. It has been an honour and privilege to play with the boys in the squad: Harvey Camisa-Bundy, Finbarr Davies, Louie Keable, Jordan Kwakwa, Montel Maruziva, David Olajiga, Tom Pereira, Michael Priest, Stephen Self, Luke Tracy and Kieran Walsh.

March at St Philomena’s. On the St Phil’s

side there were a number of different singers and dancers, with a singer and guitarist winning the competition and a dance group coming third. On the Fisher side we had Sam and Chris, a Disney tribute act. Ben Jerrard, a very talented opera singer. Soniti Coeli, which consisted of John Kelly and Peter Owen as a metal and classical mash-up band. Drum Army which included Gene Carini, Joe Sharkie and Will Agate as a co-ordinated drum band. Robert Simpson, a magician who blew our minds. Louis Davern, a singer and ukulele player, and runners up in the competition James Ryan and Ryan Pollock, singer and guitarist. The evening also included a performance from Faith Child and a load of teachers from Fisher dancing. The other good thing about the talent show was that all the money raised went to charity - the main one being a Prostate & Testicular Cancer Charity. Well done to all those who took part and a huge thank you to every one – especially the sixth former and staff from Fisher and St Phil’s. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Uniform and Appearance With the recent warm weather and upcoming Easter break, I thought it prudent to remind you of the school’s expectations regarding uniform and haircuts. Full uniform must be worn at all times, including journeys to and from school. Haircuts should be in such a style so that ears, eyebrows and collars are fully visible when the hair is straight - no comb-overs please! Hair should not be so short that the scalp is visible, nor should lines or patterns be cut into it.
