Collection Details CREATORS: Eberson, John, 1875-1954; Eberson, Drew, 1904-1989. TITLE: The John and Drew Eberson Architectural Records Archive, (inclusive), (bulk). ARRANGEMENT: Arranged in two series: I. Project Records, 1915-1988 (inclusive). II. Drew Eberson Materials, ca. 1920s-1988 (inclusive), 1950-1980 (bulk). BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: John Adolph Emil Eberson was born in 1875 in Cernauti, Bukovina, a region of Austria. He attended the University of Vienna, concentrating on technical engineering. Eberson emigrated from Austria to the United States, settling in St. Louis in 1901. John Eberson is best known for his “atmospheric” theaters, with the initial project in this style usually cited as the Houston Majestic Theatre, completed in 1923. With the offer of a number of commissions for Loew’s Theaters, John moved the firm to New York City in 1926. In 1928 son Drew Calvin Eberson was made a full partner in his father’s firm, which then became John and Drew Eberson, Architects. By the end of the 1920s the Eberson firm had completed nearly a hundred atmospheric theaters in the eastern two-thirds of the country. This period was followed by a significant number of Eberson theaters designed and constructed in the Art Deco style during the 1930s and 1940s. John Eberson died after a long illness in March of 1954. Drew continued the firm under the father and son name for another eighteen years. Drew’s major projects included the National Film Board of Canada’s center in Montreal, designs for suburban drive-in theaters throughout the United States, and in the 1960s through the 1980s, involvement in the preservation, restoration, rehabilitation, and renovation of historic theaters (many of which were Eberson designs). Drew kept the firm’s architectural records as an archive in his home in his later years, and corresponded frequently with historians, architects, and theater enthusiasts. SUMMARY: The John and Drew Eberson Architectural Records Archive collection includes drawings, photographs, correspondence, writings, publications, and clippings relating to the work of John and Drew Eberson as architects and engineers. The series originating solely from Drew Eberson includes personal papers, photographs, office files, project records, a small collection of published writings by John Eberson, as well as John’s club membership certificates, and twenty-two short motion picture films that appear to have been created and collected by C. J. Latta, Drew’s father-in-law. PROVENANCE: Gift of Mr. Mitchell Wolfson, Jr., 1991, purchased from the Max Protetch Gallery. Protetch purchased the original collection from Suzanne Callahan, Drew Eberson’s stepdaughter, in 1986. Parts of the collection were sold and/or gifted to other parties prior to the purchase by Mitchell Wolfson, Jr. The John And Drew Eberson Architectural Records Archive Finding Aid, page 2

Biographical Sketches John (Adolph Emil) Eberson John Eberson, architect and engineer, was born on January 2, 1875 in Cernauti, Bukovina, a region of Austria. He was educated in Dresden and at the University of Vienna, where he specialized in electrical engineering. Eberson served in the Fourteenth Hussars of the Austrian Army before emigrating to the United States in 1901, settling in a German and Austrian immigrant community in St. Louis. His first employment was with an electrical contracting shop, which led to an informal business relationship with a St. Louis contractor-architect, scenic designer, and theater promoter, the Johnston Realty & Construction Company. In 1903 John married Beatrice Lamb (1885-1954), an interior decorator originally from London. Beatrice was an important figure in the Eberson architectural firm’s best-known work during the 1920s. John and Beatrice had three children: Drew, Lora, and Elsa. The 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair introduced John Eberson to the movies, and to Karl Hoblitzelle of the Interstate Theater Company. The use of temporary building materials in the fair buildings, pioneered by Daniel Burnham at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, may have influenced John’s later approach to inexpensive, elaborate interior theater design and construction methods. In 1904 the Ebersons moved to Hamilton, Ohio, where John opened his own architectural practice in 1908. He executed his first independent theater design in Hamilton, as well as commissions for industrial and commercial buildings. In 1910 his theatrical connections prompted him to move to Chicago for theater design opportunities. It was there that John built a practice that would include theater projects throughout the United States and in a number of other countries. In 1926 Loew’s Theaters offered the firm a number of commissions in New York City, and John relocated the firm there in that year. John’s son Drew was made a full partner in 1928 under the name John and Drew Eberson, Architects. After John’s death in 1954, Drew directed the firm under that name for another 18 years. John Eberson is credited with inventing the “atmospheric” theater style, beginning possibly in 1922 with the Orpheum Theatre in Wichita, Kansas, but most clearly with the 1923 Majestic Theatre in Houston, commissioned by Hoblitzelle. The success of the Majestic was immediate, leading to the design and construction of significant numbers of similar theaters by John Eberson and other architects. By the end of the 1920s the Eberson firm had completed nearly a hundred atmospheric theaters in the eastern two-thirds of the country and designed important theaters in other parts of the world. The firm’s work included designs for several large theater chains such as Paramount, Universal, Warner Brothers, and Loew’s. Each of Eberson’s atmospheric theaters was loosely based on a different cultural design theme, or a combination of themes, for exotic effect. The atmospheric concept was, according to John Eberson, inspired by his winters in Florida, where he encountered “Italian gardens, Spanish patios, Persian shrines and French formal

gardens.”1 Inside the Majestic Theatre, Eberson and his team created the illusion of a Mediterranean outdoor environment, using plaster for fake building facades and statuary— including a reproduction of the Porch of the Maidens on the Acropolis—on both side walls, with a different set of facades on each wall. The innovation lay in extending theater stage design to the entire theater interior, adding to the escapist nature of the early motion picture experience, enhanced by a live orchestra and a Wurlitzer organ, which held particular appeal during the 1920s. At the Majestic and other Eberson theaters, a cost-saving and crowd-pleasing feature was the plain, deep blue ceiling with twinkling lights, onto which moving clouds were projected. Artificial lights in the theater simulated full daylight, to nighttime, to dawn, to daylight again. The evocative environments were particularly suited to the enjoyment of silent movies with musical accompaniment. The total effect was heightened by grand lobbies and men’s and women’s rooms adorned with vaults, murals, chandeliers, furniture, banners, urns, statuary, and other objects vaguely associated with European estates or villas in the Mediterranean. In about 1923 John formed his own interior decoration firm, Michael Angelo Studios, to produce and collect the objects that would finish the theater interiors. His wife Beatrice directed that concern. The decoration often involved the inclusion of living plant material and live and stuffed birds, not unlike the earlier expositions in Chicago and St. Louis. Later atmospheric theaters designed and built by the Eberson firm include the Avalon Theatre (now the New Regal) done in a Persian theme in Chicago, Illinois (1927); the Moorish and Mediterranean Loew’s Akron Theater in Akron, Ohio (1928), the State Theatre in Gothic Revival in Sydney, New South Wales (1928); Loew’s Paradise Theatre in Italian Baroque in the Bronx, New York (1928); the Majestic Theatre in Spanish Mission Revival in San Antonio, Texas (1929); and the vaguely Baroque Le Grand Rex in Paris (1932). Le Grand Rex, still operating, currently seats 2,750 and remains the largest single movie auditorium in Europe. It was named a French historic monument by the Minister of Culture in 1981. For a brief time in 1934, following the onset of the Depression, the Ebersons dissolved the firm. John hired his services and personnel out to other firms in the interim, and attached himself to the firm Eberson and Kautzky before reincorporating under the former name of John and Drew Eberson, Architects. The economic crash, developments in architectural design, and motion picture technology moved theater design away from eclectic revivalism and atmospherics and toward the streamlined Art Deco style, with smaller theaters for sound pictures. The Eberson firm designed a significant number of successful Art Deco movie theaters during the 1930s and 1940s. In this John Eberson proved himself to be adaptable and immensely creative as an architect and engineer, responding to the rapidly evolving motion picture industry with ingenuity and entrepreneurship, as he had in the 1920s. During the war years in the 1940s, John Eberson and others like him served on the War Production Board. His projects during those years include a hospital and Camp Hero on Long Island, and housing and other facilities in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey and at the United States 1

Military Academy. After active military service Drew Eberson rejoined the firm, and together the Ebersons engaged in housing construction, the design and construction of small, neighborhood theaters throughout the country, and larger theaters such as the Teatro Junin in Caracas (1950) and the Teatro Roble in Mexico City (1950). John Eberson died after a long illness at the age of 79, in Stamford, Connecticut on March 6, 1954.

Drew (Calvin) Eberson Drew Eberson was born to John and Beatrice Eberson on February 19, 1904 in Hamilton, Ohio. He attended the Northwestern Military and Naval Academy in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin from 1918-1922. As a young man Drew worked for his father’s architectural firm in various capacities before and during his education at the School of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, between 1922 and 1925. Drew dropped his studies prior to completion of his degree, perhaps in response to the family’s move to New York City in 1926 for commissions by Loew’s Theaters. In 1928 Drew was made a full partner in John and Drew Eberson, Architects. During the Depression, which necessitated a brief dissolution of the Eberson firm beginning in 1934, Drew worked for Warner Brothers Studios and Columbia Pictures in Hollywood for over eight years. He worked on more than 150 feature pictures, as film editor, unit manager, assistant director, and director. In 1938 Drew directed The Overland Express, an action Western set in 1861. During World War II Drew served as a colonel in the Army Corps of Engineers. He was the Chief of Operations in Construction in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations. After the war Drew returned to the Eberson firm, and brought in commissions for theaters in the West Indies, San Salvador, Venezuela, Israel, the Dominican Republic, and Guadeloupe. Just as John Eberson’s wife, Drew’s mother, figured significantly in the Eberson firm as an interior decorator, so too did Drew’s wife, Peggy Latta Eberson. Peggy designed interiors for the firm from roughly 1955-1972. Peggy’s father, C. J. Latta (1896-1974), was a managing director of the Associated British Picture Corporation, and affiliated with ABC Cinemas/Warner Brothers. Drew and Peggy Eberson were active in the Variety Club of New York, a charitable organization for which C. J. Latta was a founding member in Great Britain. Drew’s work during the 1950s and 1960s consisted to a large degree of the design and construction of drive-in and other motion picture theaters, for which the firm executed its own electrical, air-conditioning, mechanical, and structural work. His largest commission was the National Film Board of Canada’s production facilities in Montreal completed in 1956, two years after John Eberson’s death. In the mid-1960s Drew worked with Pearson & Rawdon, Architects, based in Los Angeles. He was made a partner of the firm Eberson, Pearson, & Wuesthoff for the design and renovation of several theaters in San Bernardino, Topanga Canyon, Santa Ana, and San Diego, California. The association proved to be short-lived, coming to a halt sometime in 1968. Meanwhile the firm of John and Drew Eberson, Architects-Engineers continued under that name until Drew removed from New York City to Stamford, Connecticut in 1973. From that time until 1982, Drew practiced The John And Drew Eberson Architectural Records Archive Finding Aid, page 6

his profession under his name alone; thereafter he acted in partnership with an architect named Michael Toto. As the theater preservation movement gained ground in America in the decades after 1960, Drew became increasingly involved as a consultant and activist in the preservation, restoration, renovation, and rehabilitation of Eberson theaters. From roughly 1969 to 1978 the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) solicited Drew’s assistance to compile documentation for a number of Eberson theaters. HABS borrowed and copied photographs and drawings of Eberson projects from Drew’s archive (these copies are retained by the Library of Congress, and many of the photographs are on the American Memory Project Website). In the 1970s, fourteen John Eberson theaters were listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Akron Theatre in Ohio was the first Eberson theater to be listed on the register, in 1973. The early Eberson theaters were prime candidates for rehabilitation as performing arts centers, with their excellent acoustics, good sight lines, dressing rooms, and orchestra accommodations. The Akron Civic Theatre commissioned Drew to produce an advisory report on the restoration needs and costs for the theater, which he submitted in 1976. This theater was restored and developed as a performing arts center, and is still operating. Other examples of faithfully restored, operating performing arts centers designed by John Eberson include the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts in Miami (formerly the Olympia Theatre, 1926) and the Tampa Theatre (1926), in Florida. For the restoration of the Tampa Theatre the City of Tampa retained Drew for consulting services in 1976 and again from 1980-1982. Drew’s preservation activities were the subject of a 1983 Preservation News article, in which the author made reference to Drew’s archive of architectural drawings and photographs of theaters by the Eberson firm. The Architectural Archives of Pennsylvania contacted Drew for a donation of selected drawings from the atmospheric theater period of John Eberson’s work; Drew donated 100 drawings in response. In 1984 Drew sent copies of drawings of the Silver Theater and shopping complex (1938) in Silver Springs, Maryland upon request from the Art Deco Society of Washington, which had lobbied for the preservation of the complex beginning in the early 1980s. In 2003 the American Film Institute opened the rehabilitated Silver Spring Center for its Silver Theatre and Cultural Center. Drew Eberson died on July 8, 1989. As of May of 2008 there were twenty-eight John Eberson theaters on the National Register of Historic Places. Drew Eberson’s retention of drawings and other project records in his personal archive had been a source for preservationists, architects, and historians during his own lifetime and after, and will continue to be a significant historical and cultural resource as the John and Drew Eberson Architectural Records Archive at The Wolfsonian–Florida International University.

Description of the Materials Series I contains all project related material received by The Wolfsonian–Florida International University arranged by media type: these media include correspondence, oversized materials, photographs, and drawings. This material has been sorted according to unique project numbers assigned by the firm and reflects original order. Any project materials that do not have project numbers have been arranged chronologically by project, appearing after document groups with project numbers. This finding aid represents the simple box listing for these records; for a list of projects cross referenced with all available materials see the project index. All correspondence records were found in metal filing cabinets used by the Eberson firm and primarily consist of Drew's career beginning in the 1950's. Oversized materials include legalsized correspondence, folded reproductions of drawings, and miscellaneous materials such as product samples received by the firm. Approximately eleven linear feet of photographs were found within decaying leather binders and document John Eberson's career beginning in the 1920's and continue through Drew's career into the 1970's. The bulk of the archive is made up of drawings produced by the firm that document the very beginning of the Eberson firm up until several years before Drew’s death in the 1980’s. The papers, drawing reproductions, photographs, and films in Series II reflect Drew Eberson’s original order of the contents of the file cabinets in which they were housed during his lifetime, with the exception of the subseries on theater history and preservation. Most of the materials in this series, having to do with Drew’s business records and personal papers, appeared to have been undisturbed after the collection’s transfer to the Max Protetch Gallery in 1986 and subsequently to The Wolfsonian–Florida International University in 1991. The subseries of short 16mm films appear to have belonged to C. J. Latta, Drew’s father-in-law (see the subseries description for more information). Series I. Project Records. 1915-1988 (inclusive) Correspondence Contains nineteen linear feet of correspondence produced and received by the firm primarily from the 1950’s onward. Information within the correspondence files may include: engineering specifications, applications to local building authorities, lawsuits, and other project-related information. Photographs found in these files were removed to the photograph files. Box C-1 1. Job List and Code Numbers 2. Riviera Theatre, Project #574 3. Farragut Theatre, Project #1435 4. The John And Drew Eberson Architectural Records Archive Finding Aid, page 60

Subseries A. Personal Papers, ca. 1945-1978 The small number of personal papers in the Eberson collection document Drew Eberson’s life outside of his career to a limited degree. The categories for the Personal Papers Subseries are Address Lists, Automobiles, Correspondence, Financial Records, and Obituaries. Most of the materials in this subseries were filed separately by Drew himself as personal files; these date from the late 1960s and 1970s. The address lists in this subseries differ from those in other subseries in that they represent contacts made outside of Drew’s business concerns, comprising fraternity members, University of Pennsylvania alumni, and military contacts. The few letters to and from family members were found interspersed in the office files; these were pulled and organized into the Personal Papers Subseries. Also found in the office files were letters about an Eberson family car, a Duesenberg, which included photographs of family members, friends and the car, dating from the late 1920s and early 193os. The correspondence on the car was moved to the Personal Papers Subseries, and the photographs now reside in the Photographs Subseries, together with photocopies of the relevant correspondence. Subseries B. Photographs, ca. 1920s-1970s The Photographs Subseries comprise loose photographs unrelated to specific architectural projects. The majority are commercial portraits of Drew Eberson taken for publicity purposes. The earliest portrait of Drew appeared in an article on atmospheric theaters written by John Eberson for the Motion Picture News issue of December 30, 1927 (see Subseries D, Writings). Some of the portraits of Drew in military dress are photographers’ proofs, and thus cannot be exposed to light without harm. These are restricted from photocopying, exhibit, and flash photography. Drew’s short career in motion pictures in the 1930s is represented by publicity portraits of actresses, most of which are inscribed with personal messages and signatures. The portrait of Drew and an unidentified woman on horseback appears also to date from Drew’s Hollywood period. An assortment of snapshots and one transparency depict leisure activities that might have been associated with travel overseas for military or business purposes. The only picture of John Eberson in the Drew Eberson series resides in the Duesenberg car file in the Photographs Subseries. Oversize portraits comprise a group portrait of Drew’s fraternity at the University of Pennsylvania in 1922, and a standard color print matted oversize, taken at an event in the 1960s. There are a few other photographic materials in the Drew Eberson series that are not organized into the Photographs Subseries. These were kept in their original contexts, with correspondence and other materials, to retain their original function and meaning. See the Drive-In material in Subseries C, and the material on the Avalon Theatre in Subseries E. Box 2 1. Duesenberg car, family & friends, ca. 1929-1932 2. Subseries C. Professional Papers, ca. 1929-1988 (inclusive), 1950-1980 (bulk) The Professional Papers Subseries represents the bulk of the Drew Eberson series. All but the materials on the John and Drew Eberson Archive in this subseries were originally filed alphabetically in office cabinet file drawers that belonged to Drew Eberson. Documentation of the Archive resulted from Drew’s custodial management of the Eberson firm project records and architectural drawings. Toward the end of Drew’s life, these records were stored in his home basement in Stamford, Connecticut sometime after the closure of the firm’s New York office in 1973. The list of projects, index card system, guide to the locations of drawings, and other notes on the Archive served to assist Drew in managing the material for his own access and to assist others in their research. The last items in the section on the Archive document its disposition between 1984 and 1986 to the University of Pennsylvania and the Max Protetch Gallery. They also include notes taken by or for architectural historian Jane Preddy in preparation for an exhibition of Eberson theater drawings and photographs at the Hunter College art gallery in 1988. The exhibition resulted in an illustrated catalog entitled Temples of Illusion: The Atmospheric Theaters of John Eberson. The other major categories of the Professional Papers Subseries are Office Correspondence, Drive-In Theaters, Interior Decorating, Publicity, Surveys, Construction, and Architectural Certificates and Licenses. These chiefly reflect Drew Eberson’s management of the architectural firm following his father’s decline and death in 1954. In the Rennald Wacht correspondence file the researcher will find documentation of Drew Eberson’s tenure in the New York City office from 1961-1973, including Drew’s sketches for the configuration of the interior work spaces. The Interior Decorating material includes invoices, a few fabric samples, and a complete schedule of hardware for the Boulton residence in Caracas. Peggy Latta Eberson, Drew’s wife, was an interior decorating consultant for the firm from about 1958 to 1972.

In the Publicity material the researcher will find texts for most of the speeches written and presented by Drew Eberson in the collection. In these speeches Drew reflected on the movie theaters of his father’s era and discussed then-current movie theater design and construction and its probable future. For the text of a 1971 speech by Drew on the Paradise Theatre in the Bronx, see the subseries on Theater History, Preservation, Restoration, and Renovation. Box 3 1. Subseries D. John Eberson, 1927-ca. 1947 Very little material originating with John Eberson exists in the Drew Eberson series. It is organized into the John Eberson Subseries, consisting of a Christmas card list with short poems as texts for each recipient, two published articles and one interview, a prospectus for the unrealized Silver Mask Building, club membership certificates, and one patent dated 1931. The 1927 illustrated article on atmospheric theaters has been scanned and saved as a PDF. The published articles and interview are valuable sources on John Eberson, his atmospheric theater concept and execution, and his adaptation to the business environment for theater architects during the Great Depression in America. Copies of two letters written by John Eberson can be found in the correspondence file for Theodore Ayers in the Professional Papers Subseries. Box 18 1. Christmas card list & texts, ca. 1947 2. Writings, 1927 & 1931 3. Published interview, 1939 The John And Drew Eberson Architectural Records Archive Finding Aid, page 70

4. Club Membership Certificates, 1927 5. Silver Mask Building prospectus, ca. 1934 6. Patent, 1931 Subseries E. Theater History, Preservation, Restoration & Rehabilitation, ca. 1920s-1988 (inclusive), 1970-1985 (bulk) The materials on theater history, preservation, restoration, and rehabilitation compiled by Drew Eberson were organized to facilitate access in the following categories: General Theater History and Preservation, Theatre Historical Society of America, John Eberson Theaters—History and Preservation, and John Eberson Theaters—Restoration and Rehabilitation. This is a particularly rich subseries for the history of theaters and the preservation movement in America. From 1969 to 1977 the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) corresponded heavily with Drew, requesting copies of drawings and photographs to document Eberson theaters. Drew eagerly complied, and his copies along with HABS documentation remain in the collections at the Library of Congress. The correspondence file includes six reproductions of design drawings made for the Grand Riviera Theatre in Detroit. While the Riviera was demolished in 1999, twenty-eight other Eberson theaters in the United States were on the National Register of Historic Places by 2008. The Ebersons’ 1932 Rex Theater in Paris, still operating, was named a French historic monument by the Minister of Culture in 1981. Much of the Theatre Historical Society of America’s correspondence with Drew Eberson and its publications in the collection are concerned with the history and preservation of Eberson theaters. Drew Eberson loaned photographs and drawings to writers for several of the Marquee issues and annuals published by the Theatre Historical Society (THS). In 1975 Drew contributed the Foreword to the illustrated THS annual devoted to the Paradise Theatre in the Bronx, New York. For a 1989 annual, Jane Preddy authored Glitz, Glamour and Sparkle: The Deco Theatres of John Eberson. While the photographs for this annual were drawn from a private collection, Preddy’s access to the Eberson Archive provided her with important historical information. In particular, Preddy’s points about standardization in Eberson theater architecture in the Art Deco era rely heavily on four 1930 sketches drawn by John Eberson for Warner Brothers, found in the Eberson Archive after its transfer to the Max Protetch Gallery. A number of other authors, scholars, and a filmmaker benefited from Drew Eberson’s experience in the Eberson firm, and from his generosity in making available copies of drawings and photographs from the project records in the archive. The correspondence in the John Eberson Theaters—History & Preservation section reflect that activity, from 1972 to 1985. Finally, in the material for John Eberson Theaters—Restoration & Rehabilitation, the researcher will find correspondence, brochures, clippings and other resources on specific theaters. The earliest correspondence, from 1967, regards the preservation of the Paradise Theatre in the Bronx, between Drew Eberson and a community aide with the City of New York. The John And Drew Eberson Architectural Records Archive Finding Aid, page 71

Drew gave a speech on the history of his father’s atmospheric theaters with reference to the Paradise Theatre in 1971. That year the City of New York petitioned the City Planning Commission for funds to save the Paradise and declare it a landmark; Drew’s speech may have been given at the public meeting. The Paradise was made a New York City Registered Landmark in 1997. Drew Eberson was retained as a consultant for the restoration of two Eberson theaters: the Akron Civic Theatre and the Tampa Theatre, both operating as performing arts centers in 2008. Both of those preservation and restoration efforts began in about 1976. Drew’s report for the Akron Civic Theater included a copy of his father’s original cost estimates for the theater, dated 1929. Subseries F. Motion Picture Films, ca. 1950s-1960s A collection of twenty-two short, 16mm films were found in a file cabinet marked “C. J. Latta.” Latta was the father of Drew’s wife Peggy; the films appear to date from Latta’s career as a managing director of the Associated British Picture Corporation, London. Most of the film containers indicate that the films are newsreels produced during the 1950s and the 1960s by Associated British Pathé Limited. C. J. Latta was a founding member of Variety Clubs International in Great Britain, a branch of a children’s charity originally founded by United States film industry executives. Queen Elizabeth II named Latta a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his service to the charity. Drew and Peggy Eberson were active in the Variety Club of New York and Variety Club International, as evidenced by files in the Professional Papers Subseries dating from the early 1970s. The films are closed pending preservation treatment and duplication.
