Dear Friends,

From the Executive Director

2010 – how can that be? Weren’t we all panicking about the Y2K millennium bug not very long ago? Yes, it is 2010 and the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana (RMHI) will turn 28 in October! Even as we enter our 28th year of providing this warm, caring and supportive home-awayfrom-home for families of seriously ill or injured children, our mission has not gone stale. In fact, we find that we are needed more than ever. To keep our efforts to sustain the Ronald McDonald House fresh we are rolling out a new look for our newsletter with this issue. This same look will be incorporated into our brochures, website and a soon to be launched e-newsletter. The e-newsletter will keep you updated on the latest House happenings so make sure we have your e-mail address! In this winter edition of our newsletter, we share with you the many ways you can get involved in supporting the House and our mission. As you look forward to 2010, we encourage you to find your niche in the RMHI family by volunteering, donating needed items or services, attending one or more of our fundraising events or by kicking off the new year with a monetary donation. Perhaps your company or employer would consider participating as sponsor of one of our events. And finally, a huge thanks to you for your generous support in 2009. On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers and the many families we serve, have a happy and prosperous 2010!

Warm Regards,

The Journey of the Victorian Dollhouse to give to his children, grandchildren and charitable groups for fundraising opportunities.

When Tom Metzger was putting the final touches on his hand-crafted Victorian dollhouse in Hastings, MN, he probably never imagined that his work would find a home 600 miles away in Carmel, IN. He also probably didn’t know that his rich legacy of beautiful handiwork would touch so many lives, even after his death last April. “Tom Metzger was a man who devoted his life to the service of others,” said Jackie Felling, CEO and National President of Degree of Honor, a fraternal insurance society where Tom worked 30 years as chief accountant. After retiring in 1990, Tom spent much of his free time building Victorian dollhouses 2

“When we received the house from Tom’s family, we decided to display it at our national convention last summer in Bloomington, MN, and to offer it as a raffle prize to all of our chapter members,” Jackie says. “I remember the Indiana chapter saying that if their name was drawn they were going to donate it to the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana.” And as luck would have it, that’s exactly what happened: The Ronald McDonald House became the next lucky recipient of the dollhouse. But the hand-crafted beauty wouldn’t stay put for long. Staff at the Ronald McDonald House decided to make it part of the annual Taste of Tuscany fundraiser, allowing the event’s more than 400 guests a chance to bid on the charming, unique creation in a silent auction.

That’s where Sue Palmer of Carmel came in. “It was the best dollhouse I have ever seen,” says Sue, recalling her motivation to become the dollhouse’s next caretaker. “When I decided to bid on the house it was purely emotional because I have always wanted a dollhouse since I was a little girl.” Sue says she’s been adding her own personal touches to the house, including oriental carpets, artwork and Victorian Christmas trees and wreaths. “I hope someday I will have a granddaughter to pass this along to, but until then, I’m having a lot of fun with it.” The Degree of Honor members are pleased, too, that a house built for kids would be sold to benefit kids and families. “We are extremely happy that Tom’s handiwork has been enjoyed by so many, and I know Tom’s family is especially pleased that his talents could be used on behalf of the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana,” Jackie says. Top Left: Last fall, members of the Indiana Degree of Honor chapter gathered at the Ronald McDonald House to place miniature furniture in the Victorian dollhouse. Several chapters from different states sponsored rooms in the dollhouse and donated furniture to decorate the rooms. Inset: Sue Palmer proudly displays the Victorian dollhouse in her home.

Thank You Corporate Partners Each year the Ronald McDonald House receives generous donations of products and services through our many corporate partners. In each issue of this newsletter we will highlight a few of these companies for their continued support and commitment to the House. In this issue we salute IndyShred and ASI Signs. IndyShred, owned by Pat Bond, is a local company that has been shredding all of the sensitive documents for the Ronald McDonald House free of charge since February 1999. Each month IndyShred picks up our bin and shreds the documents within. Thank you, IndyShred, for helping us ensure the privacy of our guests and our documents. ASI Signs, owned by Tom and Roy Heraly, has been providing signage for both the inside and outside of the Ronald McDonald House since 1982. They also provide special signage such as door plaques. Thank you, ASI Signs, for your help in keeping our House guest friendly.

Join the Ronald McDonald House Cornerstone Society When the Ronald McDonald House established its Cornerstone Society in 2008, Marge and Roy Borgmann, longtime supporters and friends of the House, saw it as an opportunity to provide the House with much-needed support for the future, while achieving their own financial goals. “The Ronald McDonald House has played an important part in our lives for more than 20 years,” says Marge. “There is no doubt that the mission of the House will forever remain constant. For us to be able to help this happen is a blessing we share both now and in the future.”

Around the House

Comfort and Joy Holiday Open House Hundreds of community members and friends joined us to celebrate the holiday season at our “Comfort and Joy” Holiday Open House on Thursday, Dec.10, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Terri Stacy with WIBC served as mistress of ceremonies, and special events scheduled throughout the day included: visits by Santa Claus and Ronald McDonald; entertainment by Sunset Sound, Grace Kids Choir and the Lynhurst 7th & 8th Grade Center Concert Band; and dinner donated by SuperTarget of Fishers. Clockwise from top left: The Grace Kids Choir entertained visitors by singing Christmas carols; Ronald McDonald poses with the Lynhurst 7th & 8th Grade Center Concert Band; MaKenzey Pierson, a guest staying at the House, gets ready to flip the magical switch to light the House’s exterior holiday decorations.

For many years, Clawson Communications has provided computer technology and telephone system support through the donation of software, cable installation and room wiring. Although Russell Clawson passed away last year, his legacy lives on through Clawson Communication’s continued support and dedication to the House and its mission. During December’s Holiday Open House, we dedicated “Russell’s Equipment Room” in honor of Russell. Russell’s family (from left): Max, Chloe, Madison, and wife, Molly.

On Dec. 16, Bill Myers, friend and supporter of the Ronald McDonald House, created a special holiday treat for many of our House guests as they attended an evening of music and holiday spirit entitled “Season of Giving” sponsored by the Indianapolis Downtown Optimist Club at the Church Within. Local artists gave of their time and talents including Kelleen Strutz, Keith Hayes, Clifford Ratliff & the Indy Jazz Company with jazz legend Melvin Rhyne of the original Wes Montgomery Trio and others.

Share-A-Night, Share Your Heart Every night, 58 families call the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana home while their children receive life-saving treatment at Indianapolis-area hospitals. Although our cost to operate a room is about $71 a night, we ask guests for a donation of only $10 a night. For many, even this nominal amount is too much. No family is ever turned away because they are unable to make a contribution.

NBA guard Eric Gordon Jr. of the LA Clippers returned home to Indianapolis on Nov. 25 to take on the Indiana Pacers at Conseco Fieldhouse. But before the game, the 2007 Indiana Mr. Basketball stopped by the Ronald McDonald House to present a donation to sponsor a guest room for one year through the House’s “Share-A-Night” program. From left: Eric Gordon Sr., Eric Gordon Jr., and Beth Johnson, Executive Director of the Ronald McDonald House.

By sponsoring the annual cost of a family’s room, individuals and companies can directly impact the families we serve. Annual sponsorships can be made at two levels: • $5,000 sponsors a transplant apartment for an entire year • $3,650 sponsors a guest room for an entire year To learn more about how you can support the “Share-A-Night” program, contact Director of Development Aaron Carmichael at (317)267-0605, ext. 208, or by e-mail at [email protected]. 5

Foundation Grants Make A Difference

Peggy Hufford (right) and her granddaughter, Destinee Haggard (middle), present a check from the Wal-Mart Foundation to Daun Hughey, Ronald McDonald House Manager at Riley Hospital. Peggy, a Wal-Mart employee, brought this grant to our attention after spending just over two months with Destinee while she underwent observation and brain surgery to treat severe seizures. Destinee has been seizure free since the operation.

Grants are an important part of our overall fundraising strategy, and we continually work to expand our outreach to family, corporate and community foundations. The Ronald McDonald House of Indiana is fortunate to have received grants from the following foundations in 2009. Ronald McDonald House Helps Keep Mother and Son Together Like a lot of 10-year-old boys, Kirian Wilkinson loves football, hanging out with friends and playing his hand-held Nintendo DS Pokemon video game.

they gave us a choice of taking him to two different hospitals. There was no question in my mind that it would be Riley.”

But unlike most boys his age, Kirian’s days are filled with chemotherapy treatments, regular visits to Riley Hospital for Children and a myriad of medical appointments with doctors, nurses and medical specialists. Since last September, Kirian has been battling rhabdomyosarcoma, a soft tissue tumor found most often in children. Kirian’s tumor is in his nose and throat area.

During the past several months, Kirian has endured more than most could imagine: ongoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments, biopsies, spinal taps, the insertion of two central lines and a tracheotomy. And through it all, Cynthia has been by his side every hour of every day. “It’s long, and it’s exhausting; we’ve both been through a lot. But Kirian is very strong and an amazing boy,” she says.

“At first we thought it was sinus congestion but he quickly got worse and was having difficulties eating and drinking and was gasping for air,” says Kirian’s mother, Cynthia, of Rushville, IN. “When the doctors we were seeing eventually realized how sick he was,

Cynthia says she is thankful that she and Kirian have been able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House so Kirian can be close to his outpatient treatments, appointments and overnight chemotherapy sessions at Riley.

“It’s just easier being here,” Cynthia says. “We’re close to everything Kirian needs, and I can concentrate on helping him get well and not worry about where we are going to stay.” Kirian says he can’t wait to get back home to play football. “I want to play on my school’s team,” he says, adding that he looks forward to going back to school. “I miss my friends. I have the best friends ever!”

Go for the Gold Multi-Level/Multi-Event Sponsorship Opportunities An Olympic style approach has been developed for our 2010 sponsors that offers more visibility, more benefits, and more ways to become champions of the Ronald McDonald House.

Here’s How It Works To qualify as a gold, silver or bronze sponsor, sponsors select one or more investment levels within one of our special events or a combination of events: Golf, Sporting Clays, Taste of Tuscany or The Big Deal Poker Tournament. If those investment totals reach $7,500 - $15,000 or more, our sponsors will become gold, silver or bronze Ronald McDonald House sponsorship champions. More details on this program are available by contacting Pam Anderson, Special Events Manager, at (317) 267-0605 ext. 227, or by e-mail at [email protected]. Or check out our “2010 Go for the Gold Sponsor Opportunities” link on our website at www.rmh-indiana.org.

Run the Mini with Ronald! Already running the mini? Why not run it for the Ronald McDonald House!

As a team, we hope to raise $3,650, that’s enough to sponsor a room for an entire year!

We are putting a team together now and we invite you to join us!

All runners will be invited to preand post- run celebrations, so not only will you be helping the House, but you’ll have the opportunity to get to know other runners that support the House as well.

Individual fundraising goals will be $140. Why $140 you ask? • That’s just $10 per mile (it would be rude to ignore that extra 10th of a mile!) • Incidentally, $140 sponsors a family staying at the House for two weeks • Did you know that two weeks is the average amount of time families stay at our House? *This event is for runners already registered for the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon, May 8, 2010, Downtown Indianapolis.

For more information contact: • Jen Clady, [email protected], 267-0605 ext. 209, or • Heidi Gorman, [email protected], 267-0605 ext. 228
