The Haley–Miller Family Photo Collection Irving Archives, Irving Public Library

Images from the Haley/Miller Family Collection William Haley and his wife, Lucinda Ewalt Haley, came to what is today’s western Irving in 1857. The Haleys settled in the area of present-day Belt Line Road in Irving. Tom Haley, one of William’s sons, established a farm near what is now the intersection of Esters Road and Northgate Road. Always a champion of education, Tom served as president of the Irving School Board at the time the district built its first school building in 1913. Three of his daughters taught for many years in the Irving school system. Tom’s brother, John, became one of the area's first doctors and later served as mayor of Irving. Chaney Miller was born in 1854 in Kentucky. Sometime after 1880, he moved to the community of New Hope in Dallas County. He served six years as a Dallas county commissioner beginning in 1898. In 1904, he and his brother Fletcher moved to the newly established city of Irving in western Dallas County, where they opened Miller Brothers, a hardware and general merchandise store. In 1908, they chartered Irving State Bank. Chaney served as Irving’s mayor from 1917-1919 and from 1923-1927. He was also justice of the peace from 1929-1940. Fletcher was mayor from 1921-1922, at which time he moved to Dallas and established the East Grand Bank. After the death of his wife Sarah in 1913, Chaney asked his daughter Florence Duckworth and her family to come and live with him. His son-in-law William Duckworth joined him in business, and Miller Brothers became Miller and Duckworth. Lora Anderson, another of Chaney Miller’s daughters, also moved to Irving with her five sons in 1916. The Haley and Miller families were brought together when Velma Duckworth, granddaughter of Chaney Miller, married Frank Haley, son of Tom Haley. The families were further entwined when C.C. Anderson, also a grandson of Chaney Miller, married Vera Haley, daughter of Tom Haley. C.C. Anderson became the city of Irving’s first full-time employee in 1939. He remained with the city until his retirement in 1972. The Haley, Miller, Duckworth, and Anderson families played roles in the history of the area from before the inception of the city to the present time. Collection: The Haley/Miller Family Collection Collection #: 39 - photo 39-01 Date of photograph: c. 1903 Description: Chaney G. Miller (1853-1946) moved to Irving, Texas, from New Hope, Texas (today Sunnyvale), in 1904. He served as a Dallas County Commissioner for six years beginning in 1898. He was elected Irving's second mayor from 1917-1919 and served again from 1923-1927. Miller operated a hardware/general merchandise store in Irving with his brother Fletcher and later with his sonin-law W. R. Duckworth. Chaney and his brother, Fletcher, established Irving State Bank in 1908. Miller was also Justice of the Peace for Precinct 2 from 1929-1940. Collection #: 39 - photo 39-02 Date of photograph: Sept. 19, 1926 Description: Chaney Miller (left) and brother, Fletcher Miller. The two opened one of the first mercantile businesses in the town of Irving in 1905. In 1908, they chartered Irving State Bank. Both served terms as Irving's mayor. After her death, Chaney asked his daughter, Florence Duckworth, and her husband and their family to move from New Hope (present-day Sunnyvale) to Irving. Chaney and his son-in-law, Bob Duckworth, became business partners in Miller and Duckworth, a hardware/general merchandise store. Description: Fletcher Miller and his brother Chaney established Miller Brothers, a hardware/general merchandise store, one of Irving’s first businesses. The two also chartered Irving State Bank in 1908. Fletcher served as Irving’s mayor from 1921-1922. In 1922, he moved to Dallas and founded East Grand Bank, where he worked until his retirement. Collection #: 39 - photo 39-07 Date of photograph: c. 1906 Description: Pictured is the first house built in Irving, Texas. The house was built by Irving co-founder Otis Brown in 1903. He sold the house to Chaney Miller in 1905. Miller added on to the house after he purchased it. At the fence, left to right are, Florence Miller Duckworth (daughter of Sarah and Chaney Miller), Sarah Miller (wife of Chaney Miller), and Velma Duckworth (daughter of Florence Miller Duckworth). Description: Tom Haley and his wife, Fannie Tompkins Haley, are shown on their 50th wedding anniversary. The Haley family came to what is today’s western Irving in the late 1850s. Tom, born 1872, married Fannie Tompkins, who was from another pioneer family that also settled in today’s western Irving. The Haleys had a farm near the present-day intersection of Esters Road and Northgate Blvd. The couple had six children. Three of their daughters were longtime teachers in the Irving schools. He was born in 1866 in the Sowers community in what is today's western Irving. In addition to being a pioneer doctor, he served as Irving's mayor from 1927 until his death in 1932.
