THE GOOD NEWS OF GRACE May 2015 A Newsletter for Members and Friends of Grace Lutheran Church 1408 Washington Street Wenatchee, WA 98801-2555

Pentecost! Mighty God, you breathe life into our bones, and your Spirit brings truth to the world. Send us this Spirit, transform us by your truth, and give us language to proclaim your gospel, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (Prayer of the Day for Pentecost Sunday) Fellow People of Grace; A very important Sunday is happening May 24th. It’s the festival called Pentecost, it’s the time for the affirmation of baptismal faith for Sylvia, Gwen, Abby, Erik, Cooper and really, all of us too! It’s Confirmation Sunday and it’s a fantastic celebration of life given to us by God through the power of the Holy Spirit. Wear red to help bedazzle the sanctuary on May 24th. Pentecost (and the season after) is also another reminder for us to explore together this deep and rich faith of ours, to be curious about what God is up to in our neighborhood and to ask God for the wit and wisdom to be part of God’s spontaneous and creative work. Just think of all the activity happening soon with the rebuilding of Washington School. Think of the buzz that we will have as the Grace Memorial Garden gets underway, and the curiosity of our surrounding community. How is God’s leading part of these things happening right around us, and to what are we being called? “Give us language to proclaim your Gospel.” Indeed. The opportunities are many. Pentecost is considered the “birth of the Church”. Disciples weary with fear were met by a mighty wind and flames of fire and beyond everything else, the gift of the Spirit of Christ. The Church has been shaping itself around the life of Jesus ever since, in many various cultures and contexts. It’s exciting to be part of that long tradition and it is exhilarating to realize that God is still investing us in the world for the sake of the life of the world. Please be in prayer with me this month: • That all of the “official” stuff can be settled for the Grace Memorial Garden to begin construction very soon. • Thanksgiving for the young people of our congregation who are letting their spiritual life in Christ speak in many various ways. • Thanksgiving and prayers for smooth transition for Bethany, our intern from Luther Seminary for 2015-16. • For our next director of music ministries and the search process that has begun. Please note the following days off: Monday May 4, Monday May 11, Monday May 18, Tuesday May 26 (May 25 is a staff holiday) As a heads up, I will be on vacation June 21 - July 1

Worship Team News Evening worship schedule update! During the month of May we will have our Sunday evening worship at 5:30 pm. This will be a simple service of song, scripture, prayer and communion. Starting in June our evening service will move to Wednesdays at 6:15 p.m. This will be an excellent option for families and individuals who have other weekend commitments, or people who simply want to give Wednesday worship a try.

First Prayer (then coffee) 8-10 participants are meeting every Thursday morning to hear scripture, pray, and have a simple time of fellowship and conversation. We start at 7:00 am and usually are done cleaning up by 8:00. We would like to expand to grow our numbers so there can be an even bigger impact on the community and world. • Sometimes we bless one another at the font, using the water as a call back to our baptized life. • Sometimes we light candles, letting the candle represent a specific prayer. • We often pray for the congregation of Grace, the community, the leadership of the congregation and the mission of God through the people of Grace. • We also pray for our community and the world. There are so many areas of need, many celebrations, many places and situations that should be held in prayer. We invite you to start your Thursdays with us! •

Prayer Around the Cross The last Sunday in May (31st) will be Prayer Around the Cross. This is typically going to be a “paperless” service that has music you can pick up quickly and sing as part of your meditation. Time and space is given for you to kneel and pray and receive the laying-on of hands (if you wish), light candles and receive the Lord’s Supper.

Fellowship Team News Your fellowship team met last week and there are some changes we thought the entire congregation would be interested in knowing about. Due to circumstances beyond her control our team leader had to resign. Hollie Olson agreed to chair the team with the added support of Shirley Leslie. Together they will guide the team through the rest of 2015. The members of the team are Sophie Fiebelkorn, Candy Koch, Jan Lee, Matt Tilger, Beth Widby, Susan Hendrickson and Helen Tollefson. The Fellowship Team has many responsibilities. They ensure that there is a serving team to provide a coffee hour after worship each week and they provide receptions for families after memorial services. They coordinate special events such as picnics, craft nights and various outings. Finally, the Fellowship Team provides support to other teams and individuals when they put on a special event. For instance, they will work with the Youth Team to provide the BBQ for the Blue Grass, Blue Jeans and BBQ Sunday in September. The team is also responsible for maintaining the kitchen and all of the supplies. At the meeting last week they discussed the new salad bar: they talked about where to keep the salad bar when not in use, how to make the best use of it, and what else is needed in order to use it. Matt Tilger will look into purchasing the remaining needed items so that we can begin to use it soon. The team also voted to purchase a new cook top to better serve those cooking for F.U.S.E. meals and other events. Matt will have information on that for the next meeting. (Bless you Matt!!) The team is actively looking for new members- a signup sheet will be available in the Narthex. Not only is being a member of the Fellowship Team a great way to serve, it is also a perfect opportunity to get to know one another better and to also have some fun! Please consider joining us!! 7

F.U.S.E. UPDATE As our academic year comes to a close during this month at Grace, it's time for an update on FUSE. It was great to try something new and exciting for Christian education on a different day of the week! For some, sleeping in a little later on Sunday mornings was welcome and better than a busy Wednesday schedule. For other people, it was perhaps the opposite effect. After much consideration and feedback from participants, it has been determined that moving the educational piece back to Sunday morning is the preferred time for most of the adults and families who participated in FUSE. This fall, Sunday school will resume for children and adults. High school members might have a different educational time, so give feedback to Beth now so your thoughts will be known and considered! From your F.U.S.E. leaders, Pastor James, Beth Smallbeck, Dawn Aalgaard, Cheryl Salter and Michele Sandberg

Spiritual Awakenings Class to Have Guest Presenters on May 6 Guest presenters Jean Wahlstrom and Marvin Kananen will be teaching the Spiritual Awakenings class on May 6th during our FUSE time (Faith, Unity, Supper, Education). Come and learn how Ole Ndokote's experience initiated a spiritual awakening among the Maasai. It was our privilege to witness the baptism of hundreds as a result in 1992. The impact is still being felt today. Pictures and stories will help us share this unique movement of the Holy Spirit. Presenters: Jean Wahlstrom and Marvin Kananen Former ELCA missionaries, served 12 years in Tanzania, now retired in Bellevue, WA; members of Saint Andrew's Lutheran Church. Pastor James and his wife Dawn, as well as Beth Smallbeck, have a special connection with Jean Wahlstrom.. she was a professor at Trinity Lutheran College (formerly Lutheran Bible Institute Seattle) and choir conductor for many years. They all had the pleasure of taking Bible courses from her and singing in choir and smaller ensembles under her direction.

F.U.S.E Our Wednesday evening F.U.S.E. continues through May 27. Each week we begin with a meal at 5:30 p.m. (see below) which is followed by Christian Education programming for all ages. This rotation will cover Baptism. F.U.S.E. Meal Schedule for May May 6 – Potluck Meal (Please bring enough for your family and another family.) May 13 – Our very own Matt Tilger will be cooking. May 20 – The Youth Team will prepare the meal. May 27 – we will end the year with a BBQ dinner provided by Matt Tilger. Please join us at 5:30 p.m. each week for food and fellowship.

Social Concerns Team News Thank you all so much for the wonderful response to the three events planned to raise money for the ELCA World Hunger Drive. We raised a total of $2579—amazing! ($203 from the soup suppers, $1243 from the Noisy Offering and $1133 from the Ernie Collard Memorial Run/Walk). Thank you Gary Otheim for letting the ELCA World Hunger Drive be part of your most successful Ernie Collard Memorial Run/Walk.

Our spring Solomon's Porch dinner was Thursday, April 16th. Gloria Foster, Pat Fitzgerald, Earl Tilly and Carlos D'Gilmontes cooked and served dinner to those hungry young people. Our next Social Concerns' Solomon's Porch dinner will be Thursday, June 18. Rick Schiefelbein and Margie Kerr will be in charge. If you’d like to have the experience of helping that evening, please call Rick (470-6784) or Margie (670-5684).

At the April 7th Social Concerns Team meeting the team voted to send $500 to the Synod Assembly for their Clean Water Project. During the rest of this year we will also donate $50 on behalf of each person baptized between April and December. We also voted to send $250 to the ELCA Malaria Campaign.

In June the Social Concerns Team and the GLC Men's Fellowship will sponsor a GLC Habitat for Humanity work project. More news on this project will come later.

Melanie McQuaig, Social Concerns Team member, is a member of our Synod Global Mission Team. We asked Melanie to tell us about the meeting she recently attended: I serve on our synod's Global Mission Team and a big part of our ministry is with our Companion Synod in the ELCT (Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania). Nineteen other synods in the ELCA also partner with a diocese in Tanzania. Last week I travelled to our churchwide office in Chicago to gather with representatives from many of these synods to share stories, encourage one another and learn. The ELCT continues to grow rapidly. They have added four new dioceses, and expect to add three more in the next few years. One order of business was to plan for partnering with these new groups of congregations. We also learned some good practices for identifying and supporting projects for success in our joint ministry. And, we planned for upcoming visits to and from our companions. I am excited to announce that we hope to host a visitor from the Ulanga-Kilombero Diocese this July. This 15 year old young man would spend a few weeks here in the Eastern Washington/Idaho Synod, and then attend the ELCA Youth Gathering in Detroit with our high schoolers. I am very grateful that our congregation and larger church support this relationship. God is good. All the time! 9

Sunday, May 24 On Sunday, May 24 Grace Lutheran will be confirming 5 young men and women during the 10:00 worship service: Sylvia Hwang, Gwen McQuaig, Cooper Redmon, Abby Reed and Erik Olson. These 5 youth have completed their studies and are now willing to accept the faith their parents proclaimed for them at their baptism. Please join us in this celebration. The confirmation small groups will present their projects on Sunday, May 17 following worship and Wednesday, May 20 during F.U.S.E. Please join us.

The youth have one last fundraiser which is more of a ministry project than a fundraiser. While in Detroit for a meeting Paula Salter and I came across a delicious odor, it was coming from Good People Popcorn. Good People Popcorn is a local grass roots business. One of the reasons the ELCA decided to hold the 2015 Gathering was to support the City of Detroit. We would like to support Good People Popcorn! Samples will be available following worship May 3 and 10. Stop by and check it out. We will be placing an order on May 12.

SYNOD ASSEMBLY Thank you Grace Lutheran for your gifts and offerings to the ministry of the congregation. Four (actually five but that’s a long story) of us were voting members at the 2015 Eastern Washington and Idaho Synod Assembly in Pasco April 24-26. Please join us for fellowship time after worship June 7th to hear from us a recap of the assembly. We will be sharing about our experiences and the actions taken during our business sessions. There will also be information about the workshop sessions we attended.

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED Wenatchee Valley College will host an ESL program for 40 students from Naju City, South Korea (Wenatchee’s sister city). The students are 6th and 8th graders. The highlight of the program is a weekend homestay from Friday, July 24th to Sunday, July 26th. You would pick up two (assigned) students at the college residence hall at 5:30 pm on that Friday. You and your family would return with your students on the following Sunday evening to participate in the appreciation dinner. If you are interested, please complete an application form (available in the narthex) and return it to Miko Stephens, International Student Coordinator at Wenatchee Valley College. If you have questions, please call Miko at 682-6864 or email her at [email protected]. Myra Hoane (the lead teacher) will also be happy to answer any questions (662-2858).
