it’s not all about mobile apps and live chat! Welcome to the latest Good Fencing Guide, new for 2013. The last issue was out in 2011, so that means we’ve neatly leapfrogged over 2012. Last year was our 65th anniversary year, I’m proud to say and to celebrate, throughout the whole of 2012 we had monthly giveaways to reward our customers; prizes included tickets to Hampton Court, High Street vouchers and hampers, with winners being picked at random from the previous months’ orders. It was an enjoyable way to celebrate - contacting people to tell them they have won, when they aren’t expecting a thing! We also held some special events for customers and a timeline was created on the web site, showing how we developed from our inception by my father Ian Jackson, and his father selling fencing stakes to local farmers, to a business with fencing centres in the Ashford, Bath and Chester areas. Last year also saw the launch of our new equestrian range of premium stables and field shelters. They are constructed in true Jacksons fashion from Jakcure treated 35mm acoustic timber boards, this offers excellent insulation at almost double the thickness of boards used by our competitors, and they come with our unique 25 year guarantee - no other stable on the market can offer this (brochures on the range are available or if you can’t wait there’s always jacksons-equestrian.co.uk to log on to for more info). More news is that we’ve published the Definitive Guide to Quality Timber Treatment. This is in response to some misleading reports in the farming press, that instead of making the subject of timber treatment clearer, has actually lead to even more confusion. So, to cut through all the myths and hype about this complicated subject we have published this helpful, no-nonsense guide to the dos and don’ts of timber treatment. I know it may not be

world changing news for everyone, but if you are a farmer, a professional in the landscaping industry, or a householder that wants to know how and why we can guarantee our timber for 25 years, the answers are all there. It’s not a sales tool though, the booklet covers vital information on timber types, timber physiology, species suitable and not suitable for treating, kiln drying, pressure treatment, chemical loading, traceability and responsible sourcing. Recent developments on our web site are always worth a mention, the Jacksons updated ‘Fence Builder’ is now available to help you price 22 of our most w w w. jac ksons- fenc ing .c o.uk popular garden fencing panels, including trellis. You can select the style of panel that you want and then by entering the length of your perimeter, or run into the 'fence calculator' it will work out the number of panels you need. You can go on to work out the number of posts, screws, post caps and other things, like gravel boards, and it will list and price the whole lot. We are working on developing a similar tool for decking and gates, to help do the same for those products too. Watch this space. We also have a relatively new extra service that is really catching on, called Live Support. By clicking through onto the customer support messenger box you can ask any question or get advice from the sales team by typing in your query. An advisor will respond at the next opportunity. We’ve been pleased with the uptake on this way of communicating, obviously it suits some people more, than picking up a phone. And we are really getting up to date by creating a version of our web site that can be viewed on a smart phone, with mobile apps to boot! These are all great developments that sound very hip and trendy, but that aside, the important thing is it improves our service and communication with you our customer and that what’s most important to us.

We’re proud of the quality of our products, here’s one of the biggest reasons why... The 25 year Jakcure® Guarantee The Jakcure Process is the ultimate modern softwood preservation. Untreated woods have always been susceptible to rot and insect attack. The traditional remedy of brushing or dipping in creosote or other preservative, only treats the surface, needs repeating frequently and cannot reach the parts underground. The answer is Jakcure. This is the preservative process unique to Jacksons that penetrates really deep through the outer sap wood and into the heart wood. How the Jakcure process works First, all softwood is tested for moisture content - because excess moisture prevents absorption of the preservative. All timber with more than 30% moisture content is kiln dried. This drying process is essential to ensure deep penetration - the unique benefit of Jakcure. Then the preservative is forced by vacuum/pressure through the outside sap wood deep into the heart wood, where it forms an insoluble compound giving permanent protection against rot and insect attack. At least 50% more preservative is pumped into the timber than is required by British and European standards. The greater the loading of preservative, the greater the protection and a guaranteed longer life. Jakcure will not soil hands or clothing and is harmless to man, animal and plant life. It is non-inflammable and non-corrosive. Has no unpleasant odour. Does not reduce the strength or make timber brittle. Jakcure exceeds the requirements of BS EN 599-1 and BS 8417 by 50%. Gives lasting protection above and below ground, against all wood-boring pests and all forms of wet and dry rot. The lowest lifetime cost The Jakcure process adds 15% to our costs, so Jakcured fencing will cost you marginally more than other fencing, but it will last many times longer, so when you use Jacksons Jakcured timber products, they are guaranteed for 25 years, which means you only need to buy them once and erect them once. That’s real economy, or environmentally the best fencing you can buy! See the difference - the effect of timber drying on treatment penetration Eight raw timber posts are selected as samples. Timber is a natural material and takes up water as it grows. So when it arrives from the sawmill it will be very wet, sometimes with a moisture content in excess of 100% The eight samples are then split into two: Samples ‘A’ and ‘B’

Both samples ‘A’ and ‘B’ are then vacuum pressure treated. After treatment samples ‘A’ and ‘B’ are cross cut at more than 300mm from the ends to see the actual penetration level. Please note both samples superficially look the same on the outside. However if you look at the cut ends you can see that the treatment has penetrated much deeper on sample ‘A’ compared to sample ‘B’ that was not kiln dried.

featherboard panels: level top, concave and convex One of the strongest panel fences available. Constructed with 2 or 3 rails. Clad with 100mm featherboard pales. We have now improved the specification on these panels by making the top and bottom rail heavier, this means an even stronger fence for you. Featherboard is also referred to as close board, or sometimes featheredge. All panels are 1.83m wide and 50mm thick. If you need a narrower panel to complete your fence, it is fine to cut a panel to the correct size on site, although it is important to remember to treat cut ends with Jakcure® End Grain Preservative (see the foot of this page). tongue and groove effect panels These luxury framed panels are supplied in natural Jakcured finish. Panels are 1830mm wide, with heights of 0.9m to 1.83m. Top and bottom rails 70 x 51mm and sides of 45 x 51mm. The infill of the panel is a tongue and groove board (see detail) which matches the infill used on our Courtyard Gates. horizontal and vertical hit & miss panels “good both sides” Hit and Miss is so called because the pales or boards are alternately fixed on the front and the back of the panel in turn, they over-lap and create a hit and miss pattern. This also means that both you and your neighbour have a good looking side of the fence, as both sides are the same. Some people prefer the boards of these panels to run horizontally, some vertically. (Please note that it is possible to see through the vertical panels, only very slightly). Whichever variation you prefer you still benefit from less wind resistance, as air can pass through the gaps, which means much less wind resistance. Alternate pales have been cut at an angle to create a very pleasing decorative effect. woven panel Looking good from all angles - the new Woven panel from Jacksons. Types of inter-woven fencing panels have been around for years - this isn’t the strongest way of making a sturdy fence panel, and they can be prone to falling apart if they suffer minor damage to any of the key components that are holding them together once the timber softens and degrades, which can happen very easily if the timber isn’t treated correctly. The new Jacksons Woven panel, may look like an old style inter-woven panel, but there the resemblance ends. As with all Jacksons panels it’s constructed of Jacksons pressure treated softwood, framed for use with slotted Jakposts. The woven parts aren’t thin slats, but substantial pieces of Jakcured treated softwood measuring 38mm high by 9mm deep, that will stay strong, maintaining the structural integrity of the panel. And there are no unsightly rails to ruin the appearance on one side of the panel, so the neighbours and you are both winners. One more very big benefit of this super looking semi-solid panel is you get amazing light and shade effects when sun shines through the panel, and also wind resistance is lowered, as it is with other semi-solid panels, but the additional benefit is you can’t see through it, even if you press your face right up against it. post caps, finials, capping and gravel boards Panels and slotted posts look just fine on their own, but post caps, finials, capping and gravel boards add a finishing touch to a well put together run of fencing. Some may think a post without a cap or finial looks unfinished and almost naked, some may prefer to adorn it with decorative touches - each to their own. However some of these items are not purely aesthetic measures, for instance gravel boards are made from a specific type of timber that when treated to a certain “class of treatment” is ideal for areas of the fence that are in constant ground contact. So if you install a panel with a gravel board at the bottom it does a fantastic job of protecting the panel. jakoustic barriers - welcome to an acceptable level of noise and a better quality of life... Jakoustic fencing is designed to protect your property from noise pollution, caused by traffic, machinery or people, giving you a better quality of life by allowing you to use areas of your garden that have become no-go areas and also by providing a security fence that will protect you from unwanted visitors. Jakoustic comes in two styles: Reflective and Absorptive. Reflective does as it suggests, it reflects noise away from your property, this is the most commonly used type. For sites that have noise issues within a confined space where reverberation is a problem, the Absorptive barrier will also, as the name suggests, absorb a high percentage of the noise, rather than reflecting it straight back. To be sure that you get the most suitable fence for your specific situation we recommend consulting a qualified Sound Engineer to ensure you get the very best advice. ( Please ask us for details of independent Sound Engineers). Jakoustic Reflective - The Facts: The fence consists of posts, boards, and is supplied with special fixings. The boards are machined to a finished size of 125 x 34mm - this is nearly 50% heavier than standard acoustic fencing. The edges are machined with a combination of an interlocking "vee" coupled with a tongue and groove. Fence are available from 2m to a massive 12m high. The height of the fence will be determined by the site conditions. The Posts - for most applications, from 2-4.0m high fencing, are of a unique tuning fork design which traps the boards, ensuring continuous sound insulation. The posts used for heights over 2m are reinforced with a steel spur, coated black. As with all Jackson's timber products the timber has been treated with the unique Jakcure process which guarantees the products for 25 years against rot and insect attack, it also complies with highways standard for timber treatment. Absorptive Jakoustic barrier is similar in design but with an additional layer of absorbent material applied to the back, which is then contained within a plastic membrane, then secured with 50mm half round machined timbers. As illustrated in the table at the top of the opposite page opting for a jakoustic barrier can, decrease noise by at least 10 decibels (dB). To put this into perspective when you consider motorway traffic produces 70dB and conversational speech rates as 60dB, 10dBs is a really significant reduction.

The above data shows the results from measurements taken during a field trial, which simulated the latest British Standard test procedure for acoustic fencing in a practical location. The generated noise source was directly behind the barrier - barrier length 9.6m.

transparent panels This beautifully engineered combination of metal, timber and see-through acrylic creates a stunning perimeter to any garden or decked area, giving unhindered views. The obvious benefits of the transparent panels allow plenty of light through, but give protection from wind. This cool and fresh approach to creating a barrier around a garden will suit the quirky, modish style of garden becoming more popular in urban areas. The transparent panels are sleeved into top and bottom solid timber rails. The posts are dug into the ground (or can be base-plated). The intermediate posts have two connectors at the top and the bottom of the posts, these are screwed into the rail ends to hold the rails and perspex firmly in place. Corner and end posts with the appropriate connectors complete the system. Specifications Standard fence height is 1.15m high overall from ground level to the top of the timber rail and are 2m wide. Post centres are 2.23m. Timber rails are 95 x 65mm Jakcured softwood. Posts are 60.3mm diameter CHS and 1.75m long to allow for 0.6m in the ground. Posts are galvanized steel and are available with additional polyester powder coating. A base option is available, please ask for details. Clear Acrylic infill panel is 8mm thick.

Timber Playtime® fencing, as the name indicates, was originally designed for play areas in parks, recreation areas and nursery/primary schools. Making features of paths, walkways and terraces in the garden is another favourite use for a pergola. It’s a bonus if scented climbing plants are twined through the structure adding another dimension to a relaxing experience. This particular use of a pergola is a triumph. This customer has surrounded their carp pool with decking and erected a double, double two bay pergola over it to help shade the pool. It looks wonderful.

The standard length of all bays is 1.83m as measured between the posts, this allows for all of our standard wooden fencing panels to be used in conjunction with our pergola systems. You can therefore increase the length of the pergola in multiples of 1.83m. The Cross Members overhang the structure by 200mm. We recommend that the pergola is installed so that the underside of the side rails are 2.0m above ground level. We recommend using 75mm nails (800210 - 1kg 145 per Kg) for the majority of the construction but you should use 100mm nails (800310 - 1kg 79 per Kg) for the in line braces. When using nails to join two timber parts we recommend drilling a hole in the first part to insert the nail through, this enables the nail to be driven easily into the other part of the structure. jakwall Jakwall is a highly unusual grooved, brick effect landscape timber system, unique to Jacksons. It comes in three options; one with a 90mm grooved face towards the front, this option is ideal for creating retaining walls or raised flower beds. Another option is to have the 140mm grooved face to the front, this larger "brick" effect front is more suitable for creating a wall or fence by building single timbers up on top of each other to create any height wall/fence that you require. A further option is to have the timbers grooved all round, so every face shows the brick effect grooves. The timbers are fixed together with a timberlock system without any need for pre-drilling, available in two lengths. Both systems slot neatly into Jakposts, either 1.06m high for normal balustrade, or 2.1m if a pergola is to be installed above the deck. jak-deck kits Here’s a quick and easy way to create a deck wherever you want one. Jak-Deck kits are available in three sizes: 1.8 x 1.8m, 1.8 x 3.6m and 3.6 x 3.6m. These can be assembled easily and used on their own, or joined together to create whichever configuration you might want. To assemble, first ensure you have a reasonably level working area. Lay out five joists in the direction of where you want the deck boards to run. Place three Joists on top, one at each end, and one in the centre. Slot the notches into each other, and then fix with one 90mm screw in each joint. Measure diagonally one corner to the other on the frame, making sure it is square. Once the frame is square place the remaining joists into position by slotting the notches together, and then fasten with screws.

Take one decking board and cut it to 1750mm, or 3550mm, depending on which size deck you have chosen. Fix it as an edge board to the joist with 60 x 5mm decking screw. Fix the longer edged board into position in the same way. Lay the first decking board into position make sure it is in line with the edge board, and allow no overhang. Fix with 2 x 60 x 5mm decking screws into each board, and the joists below. To align the second board with the first, measure 100mm from the edge of the first board to the second, and fix in the same way as the first board.

Metal Trellis This elegant and simple solution for growing climbers, like wisteria, up walls came about as a result of one of our show gardens last year - the design for The Fragrant Front Garden by Justine Jobson showed a simple metal trellis, rather than the traditional timber trellis. Pictured right it shows how good this looks when brought to life in the show garden. The sturdy, galvanized metal mesh is polyester powder coated black, to match the colour scheme of the garden and is firmly fixed to the wall with simple fixings, to hold the trellis an ideal distance from the wall, to allow plants to climb and thrive, as you can see in the picture. Raised Bed with Trellis Panel kit Here’s a great idea for making a raised bed even more useful. Pictured right is our largest raised bed - 1760mm long x 920mm wide x 422mm deep. By screwing two 2.1m long slotted posts to either end, you can then slot a 1.5m high x 1.83m wide Premier Square Trellis between the posts and finish off with some simple chamfered post caps on the tops of the post, and you have a very useful and attractive free standing trellis with growing space below. It’s a great idea for a raised bed to grow veg and runners beans up. It also can be a useful way of partitioning off areas of your outdoor space and also screening areas of your garden too.

timber sliding gates Jacksons Timber sliding gates are designed very much in the same vein as our top quality Courtyard gates, the main difference is they are sliding gates and they are supplied as manual opening, but for large gates we recommend automation. Gates without a track (cantilevered) The gate frame 100 x 65mm with a tongue and groove infill, 100 x 25mm boards ‘V’ jointed clad both sides the gates are supported on two square posts and the gates slides on a special steel beam that is fixed to the gate through special adjustable rollers that ensure a smooth operation. The automation equipment that can be supplied is detailed on pages 104 -105. The top of the gate is supported on a channel through two pairs of rollers. The gate closes into guides on a catch post. The support posts and the catch post are fitted with base plates for bolting to foundations and are heavily galvanized to give a long life. Posts are supplied galvanized, or galvanized and powder coated in a range of colours. Gates with a track The gate frame 100 x 65mm with a tongue’n’groove infill, 100 x 25mm boards ‘V’ jointed clad on one side. octowood post & rail fencing Octowood is set to revolutionise the equestrian and agricultural fencing market by replacing half round post and rail fencing, with a system that is both stronger and faster to install. riding arenas Whether you require a commercial or private, indoor or outdoor menage, or even gallops with an all weather surface, we can offer you a comprehensive service including earthworks, drainage, fencing and access carried out by our approved arena installers around the country. Arena General Description With all arenas the surface is most important, but a good surface will be ruined if the preparation is not correct. All arenas should be constructed ensuring there is good drainage, typically this will be done with a layer of clean stone on top of a subsoil base. Depending on the site, drainage may also be included and then a layer of protective membrane, followed by the topping. The topping will normally be rubber and sand, or sand and waxed fibre.

The fencing and gates around the arena will be 1.4m out of the ground, with a top rail flush with the top of the posts., with a further two rails evenly spaced below, and finally a kick or retaining board at ground level. In exposed or windy sites we have the option of featherboard panels (see pages 10 and 11 of this brochure) that offer a solid barrier to help avoid the arena surface blowing away.

The dog gate has a top rail for nailing between the posts, with holes to support the handle attached to the plywood gate, which is contained within the slides. Two Way R.O.W. Latch Bike Restriction Barrier The bike restriction barrier is made with galvanized tubes that are set a height to prevent motorbikes gaining access to the foot paths. The barriers fit with anti tamper fixings to Jakcured posts, which should be set in concrete. The self closing C - Gate is a new variation on the more traditional type of metal kissing gate, see page 130 for the standard metal kissing gate. As with all Jacksons metal products it is manufactured from hot dip galvanized steel, so will resist rusting for many years and will be virtually maintenance free once installed., and has the 25 year Service Life guarantee. The gate is mesh clad as standard and is designed to be self-closing. Dimensions: 1.2m high x 1.5m long x 1.05m wide with an additional opening of 1.03m for disabled access. A slide bolt is installed within the slam post, where a RADAR padlock can be used. (Underneath the slide bolt on the inside face of the slam post). This slide bolt and RADAR lock can be accessed from either side of the gate. When undone/released it allows the gate to be fully open making available a space for disabled access. Ref 284600 C-Gate

Car Stop The car stop folds down flush with the ground level when it is not is use. However when it is raised it creates an obstacle which prevents the vehicle from moving. The Car Stop unit needs to be positioned so as to trap the vehicle between a front barrier, which can be either a garage door, wall or any other fixed object. They can also be used to prevent access. How the Jakcure process works First, all softwood is tested for moisture content - because excess moisture prevents absorption of the preservative. All timber with more than 28% moisture content is kiln dried. This drying process is essential to ensure deep penetration - the unique benefit of Jakcure. Then the preservative is forced by vacuum/pressure through the outside sap wood deep into the heart wood, where it forms an insoluble compound giving permanent protection against rot and insect attack. At least 50% more preservative is pumped into the timber than is required by British and European standards. The greater the loading of preservative, the greater the protection and a guaranteed longer life. See page 5 of this brochure for more details on the Jakcure guarantee.
25 year Jakcure Guarantee ®
This Guarantee is in addition to your statutory rights. Jakcure is treated timber which is guaranteed for 25 years from the date of purchase against failure which makes the timber unfit for the use for which it was originally acquired. The failure must have been caused as a direct result of either rot or insect attack. Any Jakcure treated product so damaged within 25 years of purchase will be replaced free of charge. To qualify:

It does not cover any associated costs, including but not limited to, removal of the defective product, disposal of the defective product, installation of the replacement product and the associated labour costs. 2 Timber which has been placed in abnormal conditions is excluded. eg salt water 3 Timber which has been used for an extraordinary purpose which was not drawn to the attention of the Company at the time of purchase is excluded.
Timber damage by any cause other than rot or insect attack is not guaranteed. The timber must not have been misused. When timber is cross cut or drilled it must have been treated with Jakcure®or Jakcure End Grain Preservative. Timber sections in the ground should not be cut, drilled, notched or planed after Jakcure treatment. Any timber subject to a claim must be returned for inspection with evidence of the date of purchase.

Timber Treatment Service Jakcure Preservative We are able to treat customers’ own timber which requires the timber to be below 28% moisture content prior to treatment. Our vacuum and pressure treatment is suitable for all carcassing timber and timber used in ground contact. There are various schedules used depending on the purpose for which the timber is required. The treatment cylinder sizes are as follows: Ashford 15m x 1.8m diameter or Bath 12m x 1.4m diameter It is usual for customers to deliver the timber to our yard, either from their yard or direct from the ship and then collect it after treatment. Transport can be arranged for both collection and delivery if required at an additional cost. For further details on our treatment service contact your local Jacksons branch.
