PSALM 19

 "I take this to be the greatest poem in

the Psalms and one of the greatest lyrics in the world.“ - C.S. Lewis

1 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. 2 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. 3 They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. 4 Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. 5 It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course.

6 It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth. 7 The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. 8 The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. 9 The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. 10 They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb.

11 By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward. 12 But who can discern their own errors? Forgive my hidden faults. 13 Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then I will be blameless, innocent of great transgression. 14 May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

David is the writer of Psalm 19 which dates back to the time when he was a young shepherd boy keeping watch over his flock by night.

Saturday, February 7, 15

Psalm 19 is divided into 3 parts. God is revealing Himself in these realms: • Nature (v.1-6) • Scripture (7-11) • Experience (v. 12-14)

Saturday, February 7, 15

THE THESIS OF PSALM 19 The thesis of Psalm 19 is that God is not hiding from man. He can be known and discovered. He is constantly revealing Himself through His Word and His world.

I. NATURAL REVELATION God is Revealing Himself Through the World (Psalm 19:1-6).

Saturday, February 7, 15

THE WORLD is a WITNESS to the Glory of God. 1.

It is an UNMISTAKABLE witness (v.1).

1.

It is an UNTIRIING witness (v. 2).

THE LIMITS OF NATURAL REVELATION Natural Revelation is limited in scope and function. The creation proclaims God as creator and magnifies His greatness and power. Instead of answering our questions it propels us to deeper questions still like: “What is behind all this? Why am I here? Why is there suffering? What is the meaning of life?” We need direction. John Piper states: “I believe nature is the prep-school for our affections, readying them to delight in God.”

II. SUPERNATURAL REVELATION God is Revealing Himself in the Word (Psalm 19:7-14).

Saturday, February 7, 15

God shows His glory through…. • DESIGN --- Natural Revelation • DIRECTION --- Supernatural Revelation David tells us 7 things about the Word of God:

Saturday, February 7, 15

7 SECRETS OF THE WORD 1.

It is Perfect (v.7a) – “converting the soul” (II Tim. 3:16)

2.

It is Plain-spoken (v. 7b) – “making wise the simple”

3.

It is Pleasing (v. 8a) – “rejoicing the heart”

4.

It is Pure (v. 8b) – “The commandment of the Lord is pure”

5.

It is Permanent (v. 9a) – “enduring forever”

6.

It is Precious (v. 10) – “more desirable than gold”

7.

It is Preventive (v. 11) – “by them thy servant is warned”

PRINCIPLE OF GROWTH The greater the revelation……the deeper the INSPECTION. The deeper you go in the Word, the more clean you should want to be in your heart if you are truly applying the truth.

C.S. LEWIS “If you are approaching Him not as the goal, but as a road, not as the end, but as a means…….you’re not really approaching Him at all.”
