Kiku Matsuri The Chrysanthemum Festival

Garden Hours East Veranda of Garden Pavilion Free with Garden Admission

There is a gentle sadness that drifts across the gardens and lingers over rice fields in the autumn breeze in Japan. A brief moment of awareness comes to pass in the garden every fall—summer is gone and the approach of winter is inevitable—made all the more poignant with the knowledge of how quickly life fades away. Each passing season is celebrated for the special beauty it holds in Japan. Autumn brings with it one last brilliant moment of color to share with the earth—the flamboyant red of the maples and the gold, rust, lavender and white hues of the chrysanthemum, the flower that symbolizes an entire nation. Kiku Matsuri, the Chrysanthemum Festival, comes again this year to the East Veranda of the Garden Pavilion, where diagonal rows of the giant incurve mums are arrayed in traditional fashion in celebration of this flower-viewing festival. It is the fifth of the five seasonal Go-Sekku festivals in the traditional Japanese calendar. The chrysanthemum is the official flower of Japan. It has been cultivated there since the 8th century when it was introduced from China. The imperial family crest bears the symbol of the 16-petaled chrysanthemum, which has long been a symbol of longevity, dignity, and nobility. continued

October 24-25, Garden Hours Garden Pavilion Free with Garden Admission

This popular annual event is featured inside the Pavilion on October 24-25 as the finale to this year’s Kiku Matsuri. Teachers and students of five of the different schools of Ikebana practiced in Portland (Ikenobo, Ohara, Ryusei-ha, Saga Goryu, and Sogetsu Schools) display creative new and traditional designs using chrysanthemums.

In the Garden Gift Store October has us looking at the moon and seeing rabbits in the Garden Gift Store! In honor of our O-Tsukimi celebration, better known as Moonviewing, we’ll stay open late and have a special table at the Pavilion on the evenings of October, 2, 3, and 4. Look for the rabbit motif on note cards, bento boxes, dishes, and more. We’ll have CDs available about Moonviewing including one by Mitsuki Dazai, the featured koto artist at the event. If you were lucky enough to secure a spot in the weekend bamboo fence-building workshop this month, we have lots of tools and how-to books so you can take what you learn home and start building your own fence. Mention this article, and receive an extra 10% off of related supplies through the end of October. The Ryusei-ha School of Ikebana is here the same weekend, October 1011 with a breathtaking exhibition of fall floral arrangements. Stop by the Garden Gift Store and receive an extra 10% off of kenzan, vessels, and ikebana books. This offer runs only Saturday, October 10 through end of day Sunday, October 11.

Shop the Garden Online: shop.japanesegarden.com The reference books mentioned above and a good number of garden and ikebana tools are available 24/7 at our online gallery. We’ve added new items in many categories to the website recently and plan to add more each month, so take a look to see what’s new. Member discounts are available online as well as in store.

Ryusei-ha: Exploring the Beauty of Nature through Flowers October 10-11, 10am-4pm Demonstrations both days at 2pm Garden Pavilion Free with Garden Admission

The study of ikebana is the study of ourselves in nature. When arranging ikebana, we can communicate with the living plants. Ikebana sets our hearts at rest. On the weekend of October 10-11, the Garden is pleased to host an autumn exhibition of the Ryusei-ha School of Ikebana, featuring the work of both students and teachers of the Portland branch of this school, which is headquartered in Tokyo.

Member Event: Garden Update with Executive Director Steve Bloom Saturday, October 17, 1-3pm Garden Pavilion Free to Members Seating is Limited Reservations required at [email protected] or (503) 542-0280

Come have a conversation with Executive Director Steve Bloom about the Garden! Steve has recently returned from a six-month fellowship in Japan. Hear about his work as a Council on Foreign Relations Fellow and how it fits into the Garden’s future plans. Learn about the Garden’s strategic plan and master site plan for a possible expansion. Steve will make a one-hour presentation, with plenty of time left over for questions and answers. Tea and cookies will be served.

Although students in this school must demonstrate mastery of traditional forms, they also create free style installations that blur the boundaries between flower arrangement and sculpture. Some prefer not to use artificially made containers, but, instead, use natural materials as containers. Portland has been fortunate to have a branch of this school, headed by Reiko Granade. Based on tradition, yet very contemporary, the Portland branch of Ryusei-ha School seeks to give students an appreciation of nature which will enrich their lives. Students gain not only an understanding of the beauty found in plant material (expressed in their designs) but also achieve an increased sensitivity within, to the beauty of life itself. Their annual exhibition at the Garden this year features demonstrations by local teachers on Saturday and Sunday at 2pm. To learn more about the Ryusei-ha School in Portland, visit the Ikebana International Chapter 47 web site at www.ikebanachapter47.com/Portland_Ikebana_Chapter_47/ Ikebana_Schools.html or visit the web site of the Ryusei-ha headquarters in Tokyo at www.ryuseiha.net/english/index.html\ http://www.japanesegarden.com/events/ikebana
