The Future of Europe’s Tourist Offices and Convention Bureaux

St Petersburg, 28th - 31st March 2012

From Russia with love Venue for the spring 2012 ECM networking meeting is St Petersburg – romantic, Russian, a visual delight, with a breathtaking array of historical and architectural gems topped off by the incomparable Hermitage. It holds out the promise of being as inspirational a setting for Europe’s leading city tourist offices and convention bureaux this coming March, as it has been for many of Russia’s most celebrated sons – from Pushkin and Dostoïevsky to Rachmaninoff, Tchaïkovsky and Shostakovich through to Medvedev and Putin. At the forefront of the Russian Revolution (after which in 1924 it became Leningrad), the city reverted to being called St Petersburg in 1991. In 2003, St Petersburg proudly celebrated the tri-centenary of its establishment by Tsar Peter the Great. Along with Moscow, it is the most important tourist destination in Russia which is down to its magnificent churches, squares, palaces, museums and parkland and its impressive conference facilities. Our theme for ECM St Petersburg is the future of Europe’s city tourist offices and convention bureaux. Against a background of continuing economic uncertainty and reductions in public as well as commercial sources of funding, the outlook for city tourism offices and convention bureaux is, to say the least, a highly challenging one. Uncertainty is reinforced by widespread structural change - external and external. Across Europe, city tourist organisations are being restructured; in some instances this means the creation of new public-private partnerships; in other instances it means merger and the formation of a new breed of multi-functional city marketing agencies; elsewhere, radical change management regimes are evident as city tourism organisations seek to transform themselves from within into more integrated and purposeful marketing entities. Meanwhile, the Third Annual Incon Survey of the Global Association Conference Market 2011 has shed important new light on relationships between convention bureaux and PCOs. And, as discussed at recent ECM meetings, the online booking systems and contact centres established by city tourism offices and convention bureaux struggle to fight off the threat posed by third party booking agencies, while the rise of social media and the need to convert ‘lookers into bookers’ remains a burning issue. So whither the future of city tourism offices and convention bureaux? The seminar in St Petersburg will seek to answer this most fundamental of question, taking forward the content of the debate begun at ECM Sofia one year ago and identifying best practice.

Dieter Hardt-Stremayr Managing Director, Graz Tourismus President, European Cities Marketing

ST PETERSBURG We would like to invite you to St Petersburg, a unique city, one of the most admired cities in the whole world and an outstanding venue for conferences. St Petersburg is a treasure-house of superb architecture, history and culture. From its foundation, it was afforded the status of a capital and from the eighteenth century it became the principal centre in Russia for industry, finance, science and education. Nowadays it hosts more than 300 forums and congresses each year, many of them of international significance. According to the United Nations, St Petersburg is among the ten most attractive tourist destinations of the world. The city is an open-air museum of striking magnificence, embodying architectural styles from the last three centuries. St Petersburg is Russia’s gateway to Europe. It’s a sea port, a huge megapolis, an intersection point of numerous highways. Moskovskiy railway station situated in the heart of the city marks the very beginning of the country’s railway system. As a scientific and financial centre, St Petersburg is home to highly qualified professionals and other specialists who are continually innovating and developing new products. Its universities provide Russia with 450,000 qualified graduates a year. Reflecting its position as the cultural and tourist capital of Russia, there are approximately 8,000 monuments and more than one thousand cultural institutions -museums, theatres, concert halls, cinemas, and exhibition halls abound. St Petersburg is one of the world’s most desirable places in which to live, work, play, study and do business. As Russia’s most European of cities, it is safe and tolerant with a rich business, culture and nightlife. Welcome to St Petersburg!

The State Hermitage Museum

One of the largest and oldest museums of the world, it was founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great and has been opened to the public since 1852. Its collections, of which only a small part is on permanent display, comprise nearly 3 million items, including the largest collection of paintings in the world. The collections occupy a large complex of six historic buildings along Palace Embankment, including the Winter Palace, a former residence of Russian emperors. Apart from them, the Menshikov Palace, Museum of Porcelain, Storage Facility at Staraya Derevnya and the eastern wing of the General Staff Building are also part of the museum. The experts say that if you were to spend a minute looking at each exhibit on display in the Hermitage, you would need 11 years before you would seen them all.

The State museum-preserve “Tsarskoye Selo”

The Tsarskoye Selo palace and park ensemble (the State Museum-Preserve “Tsarskoye Selo”) is a superb monument of world-ranking architecture and garden-and-park design dating from the eighteenth to early twentieth centuries. A whole constellation of outstanding architects, sculptors and painters made the ideas of their crowned clients a reality here. Tsarskoye Selo is a cluster of very fine examples of Baroque and Classical architecture and it was also the first place in the Russian capital where interiors decorated in the Moderne (Art Nouveau) style appeared. More than a hundred historical monuments are scattered across the Parks that have a joint area of 300 hectares: there are grand palaces and intimate pavilions, bridges and marble monuments, and also exotic structures imitating Gothic, Turkish and Chinese architecture that invest little corners of the parks with a romantic atmosphere.
