“J-TERM SUNDAY SCHOOL” Led by Transition Team During January (beginning January 10) all adults are invited to further conversation in our Intentional Interim process during the Sunday School hour (9:30 am). These sessions will be held in the Fellowship Hall. Please mark your calendars for January 10, 17,24, and 31! Some Opportunities for Future Mission and Ministry Distilled from Transition Team Focus Groups A brief summary of the survey results, to date (items receiving more than 20% of 79 responses): · More use of small groups (37%) · Yearning for mindful spirituality (26%) · Integrate college age and youth (26%) · Transition to a new generation of leaders, perhaps with a new structure of lay and staff collaboration (25%) · Find a blend of casual and formal forms in worship (25%) · New pastor: younger with a different generational approach (23%) · Hire a Sexton or Building Manager (21%) · Change Diaconate model to care groups (21%) · Better use of Facebook, Instagram, Internet, Social Media (20%) These results suggest that there is a high consciousness in the congregation that our church now operates in a changing environment – one more highly technological, fast paced, and intense. Relationships, in this new world, will grow and deepen in small groups wherein personal trust is exercised freely, where technology is a servant and not a master, and where spirituality and worship, the seeking of wisdom, and service to the community is blessed by the experiences of folks of all ages.

EARLY WORSHIP GETS A SHINE! Perhaps you’ve wondered about Early Worship: what it’s like, what makes it special. Well, here’s your opportunity to get a sense for this engaging, interactive, and informal worship experience. During WinterSpring 2015, Early Worship will be offered every week, 8:45-9:25 a.m. in the Chapel. Leadership will be shared by all of the ministers, and thus the worship and conversations will be all the richer! One of the gifts of Early Worship is the chance to ask questions. For instance, children and adults may ask for the “backstory” of a particular Scripture reference, or ask the meaning of a theological term. Folks often feel at ease to share their experiences of God, or reflect on lessons learned from putting into practice what they believe. Stories and hands-on opportunities mean that children stay involved with the theme. The experience of a small community in prayer is also meaningful. All are welcome! Please join us, beginning January 3.

He gleans wisdom from a diverse group of spiritual practitioners, from Julian of Norwich to Thomas Berry and Aung San Suu Kyi, as well as from numerous faith traditions. Stephanie Ford will give a power-point overview of the book, and copies of the book will be available. Two exciting weeks of experiential learning and discussion will follow! BINKLEY STAFF CHRISTMAS GIVING The staff of the church (Marcus, Dale, Stephanie, Daniel, Duane and Stephenie) has a tradition of choosing a charity to receive our Christmas gifts rather than giving gifts to one another. This year we have selected Our Children’s Place as the recipient. Our Children's Place (OCP) is a private nonprofit agency committed to the children of incarcerated parents. They strive to be the leading North Carolina advocate and educational resource focused on these children and the need for a statewide response to ensure their well-being. The Church Council has endorsed a fundraiser for Binkley’s music ministry which will be an evening of elegant desserts, coffees/teas, and superb entertainment provided by members of the Chancel Choir. Come prepared to bid on silent auction items to help raise funds. Proceeds will be used for three Binkley Music Ministry events: a community-wide children’s choir weekend hosted by Binkley in February, a trip for the Youth Choir to a music festival in March, a Chancel Choir retreat to work on vocal technique and health in late summer. Mark your calendar today and stay tuned for more information!

LESLIE LEE AND STEVE GRETZ JANUARY CONCERT TOUR COMES TO BINKLEY Leslie Lee and Steve Gretz will join us for morning worship, and then present an afternoon concert on January 24th at 4:00 pm. The duo sang in our morning worship service a couple years ago, on Martin Luther King birthday weekend…and their vocal stylings were extremely well-received. Dr. McFaul had the chance to connect with them at the BPFNA Peace Camp this past summer, and we are delighted to be a host church on their January 2016 tour. You can learn more about Leslie and Steve and hear their music at leslieandsteve.com. A Love Offering will be received at the afternoon concert .

THE NORTH CAROLINA BOYS CHOIR AT BINKLEY On Monday, December 13th Binkley Church had the great pleasure of hosting more than 400 people in our Sanctuary for the North Carolina Boys Choir Christmas Concert. It was a fantastic concert given to a standing room only audience. The NCBC is a North Carolina treasure, and the Binkley Music Ministry is grateful for our continued relationship with this esteemed choir. It is an honor to serve as one venue for their continued success, and we gladly anticipate future ways in which we will strengthen this fine partnership.

SISTERS’ VOICES IN CONCERT January 14th at 7:00 p.m. The Music Ministry is delighted to announce that Sister’ Voices will present their Winter Concert in the Binkley Church Sanctuary on Thursday evening, January 14th at 7:00. Sisters’ Voices is a choral community of girls in 2nd through 8th grades, in which each girl is known and supported while being challenged to grow as a musician and as a person. CHILDREN’S CHOIR UPDATE!!! The Children’s Choir continues to grow, and to be a glorious outreach ministry for Binkley Church. We are grateful that this group is living into its calling of being a place where the beginnings of a faith foundation and the basic rudiments of music and singing are taught creatively as to inspire future spiritual and musical development. We pray this will sustain these children throughout their lives. Daniel continues to keep in touch with several of the Chinese children that have returned to their homeland, and Rev’d Stephanie has made sure that the children receive Bibles, that they have received instruction about Communion and other Christian beliefs and practices, and that they had the opportunity on December 20th to participate fully in the Nativity Reenactment. We have been blessed this fall by these children as they have led us in worship once a month. It is no secret that the sound of these innocent fragile voices can touch hearts as words never could.  The Choir is currently on winter break, and will resume rehearsals on Wednesday evening, January 20th at 6:00 pm in Room 15.  Mark your calendars now for your children, and invite your children’s friends, your grandchildren, your nieces and nephews, and anyone else from Pre-K to 5th grade that is interested in music. The Chapel Hill Children’s Choir Workshop Weekend returns to Binkley Church on February 19-21, 2016, with guest clinicians Colleen Kingston and Kristen Gwaltney.

The 65th annual Christmas House, hosted on Saturday December 5th by Binkley Baptist Church, was a giant success. Christmas House provides an opportunity for financially challenged parents and guardians to select new toys, books, and coats for their children in a oneday, free shopping spree. New bicycles and helmets are donated to Christmas House and are given by lottery to lucky boys and girls. 237 volunteers and 1,260 volunteer hours helped to make Christmas House a success this year, not including the time and effort that went into the planning stages. We were able to bring joy to 842 local school children from 404 families. You may view the Christmas House video on the Chapel Hill Service League Facebook Page or visit the website, chapelhillserviceleague.com for more information. Pat Tunick, Sara Cloud, and I really enjoyed meeting the Primetimers group in early December and sharing the Christmas House story with them. We know that Binkley has been the host site for Christmas House for well over 20 years. We learned that Binkley has many other ties with the Chapel Hill Service League and Christmas House, including Pearl Seymour, who was a past President of the CHSL. Natalie Wilde and Kimberly Eastman Zirkle are current active second generation Binkley members. Both Natalie and her mother, Melinda Wilde, are past presidents as well. This isn't a complete list, but Patsy Currin, wife of former Associate Minister, Bill Currin (in the early 70's), was a past President of the league. Sue Schroeder and Judy Eastman were quite active in the league in the late 60's and early 70's—especially working with the Country Store when it was on Franklin Street and then at University Mall. Carol Tilley is another Binkley member who was in the CHSL. ~Beth Friedmann, 2015 Christmas House Event Chair
