BOARD CHAIRMAN Message United Way donors and volunteers share our belief that everyone in Palm Beach County deserves access to food, shelter, healthcare and a quality education. For more than 85 years, United Way of Palm Beach County has been the trusted leader improving lives and strengthening our community. One in five residents participates in at least one of 80 United Way funded programs - that’s your colleague, neighbor or friend. Your donations allow us to work across every sector of the community to identify the biggest issues in Palm Beach County and determine how, together, we can create lasting, meaningful change. In every area United Way funds, from the programs that help youth succeed in school and keep families healthy, to those that serve the elderly and disabled, we have found hunger is at the root of our community’s growing issues. Most people don’t realize that in such a wealthy and agriculturally rich county, hunger is a very real issue. More than 210,000 people in Palm Beach County don’t have enough to eat - 64,000 of those individuals are children. Kids need food to grow, learn and develop properly – however, 57% of local students are eligible for the free and reduced priced lunch at school – in Belle Glade and Pahokee that number spikes to 98%. For too many children, the free meals at school are the only meals they eat. Local seniors often have to choose between buying their prescriptions or buying food. Sadly, too many local families frequently find themselves having to pay rent or bills instead of buying groceries. These are difficult decisions too many of our residents are forced to make. A quality education, access to healthcare and medical equipment, financial independence, housing and food are not luxuries, they are why our community relies on the generous donors who support United Way. Your dollars are invested in 80 sustainable, local programs that are vetted and monitored to ensure they are meeting their outcomes, truly making a difference. I encourage you to have an experience with United Way – get to know us better and see, first hand, the work we do locally. Volunteer, become a mentor, check out an Emerging Leaders Society or Women’s Leadership Council event, attend one of our popular signature events throughout the year. These are unique opportunities to not only give back through your time and talent, but to also witness why UNITED WAY is the easiest, most effective way to strengthen our community and create meaningful change that will last for generations. Sincerely,

Don Kiselewski Chairman, Board of Directors

It’s hard to understand, and impossible to accept, that hunger is such a pressing issue in one of the nation’s wealthiest and most agriculturally rich counties. Why do we have upwards of 200,000 residents, 64,000 of whom are children, who don’t have enough to eat on a daily basis? And, what can we do, as a community, to change this? To answer these questions United Way of Palm Beach County and the administrative leadership at Palm Beach County partnered to develop and implement the Hunger Relief Plan. While the creation of the Plan was led by United Way and the County, it’s a major collaboration involving the Palm Beach County School District, Palm Beach County Food Bank, and about 40 other key stakeholders. Collectively, we have the ability to create the systemic changes needed, as identified by the Plan, to alleviate hunger. No one organization alone can do it, it has to be all of us, working together – for the children who only eat because of free school meals, for the seniors who are forced to choose between groceries and medication, for the parents who work two jobs and still cannot afford to feed their families. Together, we can make that happen. To download the full Hunger Relief Plan or for more information please visit UnitedWayPBC.org/FightHunger

How Will You Leave Your Legacy? United Way’s Tocqueville Society is a group of our most generous donors ($10,000 or more) who are deeply invested in our mission to help solve Palm Beach County’s largest problems. Membership is comprised of corporate CEO’s, community members and retirees. In the spirit of the great philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville and his admiration of voluntarism in America, United Way of America founded the Tocqueville Society in 1984. Locally, United Way of Palm Beach County’s Tocqueville Society offers quarterly immersion luncheons or Dine United. It gives an opportunity for our members to visit our funded agencies and see the impact of their investment first-hand. Many Tocqueville members are on United Way’s board and committees to help lead the direction of the organization.

“It is important as a citizen of Palm Beach County to pay civic rent. I feel United Way provides the most secure and satisfying way to give back while knowing every dollar will be properly disbursed in the community.” – Bob Levinson, Tocqueville Society Member
