Principal’s Message We know that during cold months, many parents choose to drive their children to and/or from school. From informal observations, we thought it might be beneficial to review some important Maryland State safety laws that pertain to transportation of children in cars. Seat Belts: All drivers and front seat passengers must wear seat belts. If you have a disability that makes it unsafe or impossible to wear a seat belt, you must carry a statement from your physician in your vehicle at all times. Child Care Seat: Maryland’s child safety seat law requires that all children under age eight be secured in a federally approved child safety seat according to the safety seat and vehicle manufacturers’ instructions, unless the child is 4 feet, 9 inches or taller. Child safety seats include: infant seats, convertible seats, forward-facing seats, booster seats, or other safety devices federally approved for use by children in motor vehicles. Maryland’s child safety law does not prohibit front seat riding. The lone exception to this comes into play when placing a rear-facing child in the front seat with an active air bag. If you are in need of a child care seat and are unable to afford to purchase one, please let the school know – we have a limited number of child care seats that have been donated and we would be happy to share them with families in need. Exiting the Car: While not a state law, it is a best practice to have children exit the car on the side of a curb rather than into traffic. This applies to children getting into or out of a car in our drop off / pick up circle at school. Please also remember that there is no parking in our drop off / pick up circle as the entire curb area is a designated fire lane. If you have any questions regarding these safety laws or the routines for dropping off / picking up your child from school in a car, please touch base with the front office or one of the staff on duty at arrival/dismissal.

SAVE THE DATE February 25 Peace Assembly; 2:30 p.m. February 28 Early Release; 1:00 p.m. March 14 Parent/Staff Basketball Game 7-9 p.m. March 25 Anti-Bullying Assembly Speaker on Internet/Cyber Safety at March 4th PTA Meeting, 6:45pm At the Tuesday, March 4th PTA meeting, Mr. William Gale from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children will give a talk on internet/cyber safety. This talk will be specifically geared to the parents of elementary school children. The talk will begin promptly at 6:45pm in the RCV Media Center. Free babysitting will be provided by BarT and translation into Spanish will be available. Please join us. Parent/Staff Basketball Friday, March 14, 2014 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm The RCV Parent Teacher Basketball Game needs parents who would enjoy participating in a fun, less competitive game. We also need a few volunteers to help on the night of the game. And of course we would love to have a big crowd of students and parents to fill the gym and enjoy the event with the RCV faculty and staff. Kindergarten Parent Tours There is one remaining date left for incoming kindergarten parent tours. This is a great opportunity to come see the school, and briefly observe some kindergarten classes. The dates/times for this tour is as follows: Wednesday, March 19, 2014 – 10:00 a.m. Please call the main office at (301) 460-2195 to sign up for a tour. Kindergarten Orientation Kindergarten Orientation will be held on Thursday, May 8 and Friday, May 9. On these two days there will be NO SCHOOL for current Kindergarten students. Students must be 5 on or before September 1, 2014 in order to attend school. In March we will be sending home Kindergarten Orientation packets to parents of incoming kindergartners, with information regarding required paperwork as well as a date/time for you to come to Rock Creek Valley ES for Kindergarten Orientation. On these days, we will be registering your child, and your child will have the opportunity to meet the current Kindergarten teachers, as well as have a chance to work with them. On the day of orientation you should bring with you:  

Legal Identification (such as a passport, or driver’s license) for the parent  Proof of relationship to student Current lease, property tax bill, OR shared housing form AND 3 pieces of mail  Current record of immunizations for student

Mensaje de la Directora Sabemos que durante los meses de frío, muchos padres prefieren conducir a sus niños hacia o desde la escuela. De una observación informal, pensamos que es beneficioso revisar algunas leyes de seguridad del Estado de Maryland pertinente a la transportación de niños en los carros. Cinturones de Seguridad: Todos los conductores y los pasajeros del asiento delantero deben usar cinturones de seguridad. Saliendo del Carro: Aunque no exista una ley estatal, es mejor tener la práctica de hacer que los niños salgan del carro del lado de la cuneta en vez del lado del tráfico. Esto aplica a los niños entrando a los autos o saliendo de ellos en nuestro circulo de la escuela destinado a recoger/dejar. Por favor recuerde que no hay un estacionamiento en nuestro circulo de recoger/dejar, asi como el resto del área de la cuneta que esta destinada al área de incendio. Nosotros ya hemos tenido nuestro primer Tour de Kindergarten este año, pero todavía tenemos dos fechas, no se lo pierda. Esta es una gran oportunidad para venir a la escuela y observar brevemente los salones de Kindergarten. Las fechas/horas para estos tours es como sigue: Miércoles, 19 de Marzo, 2014 – 10:00 a.m. Por favor llame a la oficina al (301) 460-2195 para registrarse para un tour.

Orientación para el Kindergarten La Orientación para el Kindergarten se llevará a cabo el Jueves, 8 de Mayo y Viernes, 9 de Mayo. En estos dos días NO HABRA ESCUELA para los actuales estudiantes de Kindergarten. Los estudiantes deben tener 5 años en o antes del 1 de Setiembre del 2014- en orden de asistir a la escuela. En Marzo se enviará a casa los paquetes de Orientación para el Kindergarten a los padres de los Kindergarteners que vienen el próximo año, conteniendo información acerca de los documentos que se necesitan, asi como de la fecha y hora para que Usted venga a Rock Creek Valley ES para la Orientación del Kindergarten. En esos días, estaremos registrando a su niño (a), y él/ella tendrá la oportunidad de conocer a los actuales profesores de Kindergarten, asi como tendrá la oportunidad de trabajar con ellos. En el día de la orientación, Usted deberá traer: 
