The Connecticut IB Academy is an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School,© an internationally-recognized European educational model that focuses on depth, breadth and developing the learners as independent, internationally-minded thinkers and problem solvers. The IB is a course of study that exceeds traditional academic boundaries and extends far beyond the classroom. International students have the opportunity to attend a public American high school with its rich diversity. Moreover, international students who attend the Connecticut IB Academy stay with American host families, not in dormitories, and thus are fully immersed in American culture and the English language. The Connecticut IB Academy is located in East Hartford, Connecticut, a suburb of Hartford, the state capitol, and halfway between Boston and New York City. Both cities are within two hours driving or train time from Hartford, making the location an ideal place to experience the best the U.S. has to offer. In addition to the proximity of such famous cities as Boston and New York, Hartford itself is known as the home of the great American writers, Mark Twain and Harriett Beecher Stowe, whose homes are open for visitors. New Haven, Connecticut, home of Yale University, is less than an hour from Hartford. Connecticut offers numerous sites important to U.S. history and culture, having been home to important figures in U.S. history, including Nathan Hale, Ethan Allen, Samuel Colt and Noah Webster. The earliest European settlers arrived in 1635. Connecticut is famous for its gorgeous autumnal colors and its many lakes and rivers which offer hiking, kayaking, and canoeing. Hartford is less than an hour from the beautiful beaches along Long Island Sound, and even closer to numerous ski resorts in New England.

CIBA’s Philosophy of Teaching and Learning

The Connecticut IB Academy’s philosophy of teaching and learning aligns with the approaches supported by recent research on best practices in education and advocated by the International Baccalaureate. As an International Baccalaureate World School© authorized to offer the Diploma Programme (DP grades 11 & 12) and as a candidate school for the Middle Years Programme (MYP grades 9 & 10), CIBA believes that students can achieve to a high level by working closely with their classmates and teachers using a rigorous curriculum that allows them to construct meaning and make sense of the world. Students at CIBA are highly motivated to succeed and are encouraged to develop themselves as inquiring, knowledgeable, principled and caring people who want to make a difference in the world through a broad understanding of global issues, intercultural understanding and respect. Teaching and learning at CIBA are centered on the student’s exploration of the world around them through the various disciplines and through interdisciplinary study. Students and teachers work together to construct meaning through deep conceptual understanding in each subject area. The International Baccalaureate approach weaves together depth of content understanding with conceptual study through real world connections, defined as “global contexts.” Students not only develop academic skills, but they work on their social, emotional and metacognitive skills through explicit practice in communication, collaboration, self-management, research, reflection, and thinking. The ultimate goal is to empower CIBA students as caring, ethical young people with a passion for a lifetime of learning independently and in collaboration with others and a well-developed sense of international mindedness.

Grade 9 & 10

Education for International Mindedness Education for international mindedness values the world as the broadest context for learning, develops conceptual understanding across a range of subjects and offers opportunities to inquire, act and reflect. 4

Testimonials From Previous Exchange Students at CIBA I like this school where I have spent a year. I have had the chance to learn new knowledge and to understand the difference in culture between two countries. I have become more independent and open-minded. Here, life not only studying, but also sports, activities and social events with friends. This school is more like a family. The teachers are nice, helpful and caring. Hello, my name is Jacqueline and I am a Brazilian exchange student. I stayed 10 months in United States and was the most crazy, excited and amazing year of my life. I learned and changed so much with all the activities and experiences that I had. It can seems just happiness and fun, but for you get success in one year abroad, without your family, your normal friends , your normal habits, you really need to be open and to be able to change yourself, to be easygoing and to try all experiences. The only think more that I can say is: "Be prepared to grow".

My name is Julia and I come from Germany and I had the incredible luck to spend a year at Connecticut IB Academy. The teachers try to push you to your best, but help you, too, when you struggle, the students are all so nice and they will always help you if you have problems in any kind of way. Everybody is so nice and open-minded to- wards all kind of ideas and next to all of these things, we all have fun and we laugh a lot. Have fun in your year, and I hope you'll have the best year of your life.

The exchange student year is an amazing experience. You get to know new people who are different than you not just because they don't live in the same neighborhood, but also they’ve been raised in a different environ- ment for their whole life, so their traditions and culture are not the same that you are used to, but theirs are enjoyable and if you want to you can have a lot of fun learning about the people that are around you and at the same time learn or improve in a different language.

Martina from Italy, my exchange year has been amazing. I met many new great people, my English has gotten so much better, I improved my social skills, I learned to better understand people, to be more tolerant and open minded. It's an experience that is worth doing, I grew a lot during it and in the end I felt like a new person that has lived so much in such a short period of time (one year flies by!).

My name is Mona and I am a CBYX exchange student from Germany. This year has been abso lutely amazing, these students and teachers have become family to me. There hasn’t been a single time I have been through rough times, without someone coming up to me offering help. And there has not been a single day where there was no one to laugh with. I love this school and will come back as soon as I can.”

Hi my name is Anna and I am an exchange student from Germany. The last year I had the opportunity to not only improve my English, but also to explore a new culture and find a new life style. A lot of people talk often about that one can expand their social circle international with this opportunity, but I did not only had the chance to expand it, I found a new family that will never leave my heart again. The language is a thing that you learn along the year, but the most important part is that one can find himself, especially at CIBA (Connecticut IB Academy), the school that I studied at over the year. Take the opportunity if you get it. It changed my life for good and I am more than happy to have taken my opportunity.
