4) 1896 Plessy v Ferguson - U.S. Supreme Court case decided it was OK to have separate facilities for white and black Americans as long as they were equal (separate but equal). The Supreme Court was saying that segregation was legal.

Civil Rights Movement Events - the fight for integration

1) 1954 Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court case overturns the "Plessy" decision and decides that separate but equal is unconstitutional. Segregation is now illegal in the eyes of the law. This starts the fight for civil rights in America.

2) Civil Disobedience - a form of peaceful and non-violent protest even in the face of violence from others -this was the main method of protest for equality. Most Civil Rights Movement events use civil disobedience and non-violence

3) 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott -In 1955 Rosa Parks is arrested for refusing to give up her seat at the front of the bus to a white man. She is arrested and her arrest starts a boycott of the Montgomery buses that lasts for a year. Eventually the boycott is successful and the buses are integrated.

4) 1957 - The Little Rock Nine -Nine students are escorted into school in Little Rock, Arkansas to enforce the Brown v. Board court decision and integrate the schools. President Eisenhower authorizes the use of the National Guard to protect the students.

5) 1960 - Greensboro Sit-Ins In 1960, students in Greensboro, NC begin the sit-in movement, sitting at segregated lunch counters and refusing to leave until served or arrested. This began a nationwide sit-in movement.

7) August 1963 - March on Washington -Civil Rights Leaders including Martin Luther King, Jr. lead a march of more than 200,000 people into Washington DC to fight for Civil Rights Laws from the government. MLK gives his famous "I Have A Dream" speech.

Civil Rights Legislation Passed 1964 Civil Rights Act - protected the right of all citizens to vote and outlawed segregation 1965 Voting Rights Act - outlawed discriminatory voting laws, such as literacy tests, to provide African Americans with their constitutional right to vote Is this the end of the civil rights movement?
