Third Base From the Pastor:
The Changing Face of Grand Center New developments are on the way in Grand Center:
Arts Academy Plaza
This new park will be across from Powell Hall and will be 14,000 sq. feet. The park will include tiered seating which encourages volunteer performances. The park is expected to open by the end of 2016.
Missouri Theater Building (located next to Third)
The building is receiving a complete makeover to accommodate a 145 room boutique hotel and office space. The new hotel will be named Hotel Angad. The office space will be occupied by Bull Moose Industries (a local tubing company).
Strauss Park
In June, I was honored to receive an invitation and attend the opening of the newly renovated park, which includes improved landscaping and seating. Third’s Gene Dobbs Bradford was one of the event’s keynote speakers.
Washington Avenue Streetscape
Grand Center will implement its first streetscape project on Washington Avenue from the Sheldon to Grand Avenue. Sidewalks will be upgraded with new seating and lighting. The project is expected to conclude by end of 2016.
Art Walk
Grand Center is collaborating with SLU to create crosswalk connectors between SLU and surrounding neighborhoods. The pedestrian walkway will run from SLU to Public Media Commons to Sheldon. Construction is scheduled for this summer. Continued on page two

All of these projects will increase foot traffic to Third Baptist Church. Working in conjunction with Arts and Worship Committee and staff, Third must prepare:
Quality front entrance to our Sanctuary on Sunday mornings Doors open and quality foyer space Clear signage concerning all entrances and exits to our church campus.
God has placed Third in a “Grand” community—which is reflecting on creative options to revitalize and reconnect people to Grand Center. Let us partner together in this story and prepare for others—to experience a place of Grand grace and redemption together. Blessings, Tommy
Summer Sermon Series Continues What is your biblical literacy concerning familiar stories of scripture? The first time we encountered these passages (for many long term church goers) was in children’s Sunday School, camps or Vacation Bible School. However, the familiar can take on different hues and tones as we consider through adult eyes or in an intergenerational setting. Sometimes when we travel familiar roads we tend to miss important landmarks along the way… July 10:

In Our Church & Community Independence Day Prayer By Juan Moore Written for Worship on Sunday, July 3 Dear Heavenly Father, We come to you giving thanks for our nation’s independence today. We thank you for family gatherings, parades and fireworks. Lord, remind us not to take our freedoms and liberties for granted. Lord, remind us to acknowledge that these freedoms did not come without struggle and sacrifice by many a generation.
Lord, remind us that it was not as easy as turning on a light bulb when we ask, “why can’t they just be like us?”
Lord, remind us to acknowledge that these freedoms did not come without struggle and sacrifice by many a generation.
We pray for the men and women of our military who continue to serve our nation in every way. We pray for the churches, temples and mosques of our community and the world, that they teach faith and love, that they be a beacon for peace and justice.
Lord, lead us here at Third Baptist to use our freedom and independence responsibly for others without prejudice. We pray this in your son, Jesus’ name, Amen
